Legendary Dog-Eating Catfish Dies

BERLIN (Reuters) - A giant catfish that ate a dog and
terrorized a German lake for years has washed up dead, but the
legend of "Kuno the Killer" lives on.
A gardener discovered the carcass of a five-foot-long
catfish weighing 77 pounds this week, a spokesman for the
western city of Moenchengladbach said on Friday.
Kuno became a local celebrity in 2001 when he sprang from
the waters of the Volksgarten park lake to swallow a Dachshund
puppy whole. He evaded repeated attempts to capture him.
"He was our Loch Ness monster," said Uwe Heil, member of
"Kuno's Friends," a local rock band named after the fish.
Several fishermen identified the carcass as Kuno, but
doubts linger.
"That's not the Kuno we know," said Leon Cornelius, another
member of "Kuno's Friends." He said he had seen several huge
catfish in the lake.
Low water levels and a summer heat wave probably killed the
catfish, among the biggest found in Germany. The northern city
of Bremen plans to stuff it and put in a museum.

Poor Kuno's daid, five foot catfish is daid
He's washed up on the shore in Germany!
He ate a dachshund whole, but he had a friendly soul;
Oh, why did our catfish have to die?

Poor Kuno's daid, poor old Kuno's daid
'Kuno's Friends' will play a dirge as he is stuffed!
In the heat of German summer, it really is a bummer,
That the stench has spread throughout the whole city.

Poor Kuno's daid, poor old Kuno's daid.
He would have made a perfect old fish fry!
with coleslaw by the pound and hush puppies laying round
Deep fried instead of being et inside!

"The northern city of Bremen plans to stuff it and put in a museum." I wonder if the American city of Bremen will do the same with 'Spaw.

'Spaw is a denizen of Bremen, Ohio.

Well, this has the two dachshunds in my house quite upset. They spend a lot of time worrying about this kind of thing, and it doesn't help when you hear stories about giant catfish. Alligators are another major problem for weiner dogs.

This catfish sounds a lot like the famous Khan from the comic Liberty Meadows.

I seen an item on Channel 4 News on that Catfish, a fearsome looking creature, worse looking than Rumsfeld. Ard Mhacha.

Well, the best meal we had camping this year (and we had some really great ones) was the night we ate the 3 catfish Wayne had just caught very early that morning. I like catfish sorta' but I had never had any that fresh and although the bottom dwelling slugs are pretty gross looking, they ate GREAT!!! One was about 30 inches and another almost two foot, so we had a lot. Oddly enough, there were no leftovers!!!! Butter and bacon grease and a couple of cast iron skillets over the open fire and they were done to perfection!

That's nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was the folksinger on a Mississippi River stemboat, we used to use our anchor as a fish hook. Bated it with an entire SOW. When the fish dtruck the pilot always yelled down the tube to get full steam ahead or the damn monster would've hauled ua all the way down to New Orleans and out to sea. We were just holding our own when the fish got stuck sideways in the river. It had it's head wedged against the state of Iowa and it's tail was held firm against the state of Illinois's shore. The water started backing up behind that fish like there was a dam throwed across there. If the fish had moved, all that water would'a broke free and deluged all the towns downstream. So the Army Corpse o' Engineers built a real dam there just in case.-------------- Eventually that catfish rotted away and was washed into the Gulf Of Mexico. But the dam is still there. Visual PROOF that the tale is true .

Art's story is, amazingly, true in every word. I grew up on the Upper River and I have seen that dam with my own eyes. In fact, he may have understated the length, since when it happened The River flowed "from bluff to bluff." It was only AFTER the dams and levees that it was tamed (yeah, right, tamed!) that it ran in the measly little channel it does now.

Much the same thing brought about the levees, by the way. Only it wasn't catfish, but water moccasins. One snake per levee was the rule, and it got rid of the biggest of 'em anyway.

I had a buddy in Alabama who caught and 85 pound catfish. He said it was a small one. They use them for bait down there on the Tennessee River.

On the Upper River there is a fish, now quite rare, called the Diamond Scale Catfish -- the only scaled catfish in North America. It's rarity is the result of human over-predation, as it was long hunted for its skin. The Indians -- Sac, Fox and the rest -- would make war vests from the hide, as the scales were quite literally harder than diamond, but not brittle. These vests could, literally, turn the bullet from a high-powered rifle (with my own eyes I saw an armor-piercing 45-70 round bounce off one). Local white men who marched off to war were given such a vest by their parents or wife -- indeed, if you weren't given one it was obvious that they wanted you dead.

The flesh was exquisite, for what was said about the turtle, that the meat was flavored as veal, pork, beef, fish, or chicken depending upon where it came from, was absolutely true of the Diamond Scale Catfish. Just a small peice of this fish could provide a balanced diet for a family of six for a week.

And they grew big, too. Art's catfish might well have been one. Bloody shame that there are so very few left, and those are always very, very small.

Though it's been a while since I read the article,The Guines Book Of Records listed a catfish from Germany as the Worlds Largest at almost 700 pounds.

Think I'll have to resurrect a thread I started some years ago.
