Hello,

I am trying to find the lyrics and tunes for other parts of the Orchestra, which I used to sing at camp in the 1960s. Each group around the campfire would get the voice of an instrument, and a tune, and they would be added one by one, then all sung together.

I can remember some parts:

The horn, the horn, awakes me at morn

The clarinet the clarinet goes doodle doodle doodle det

The violins singing, with lovely (ringing)



There was one for tympani as well, but I can't remember it.
I do have the tunes (in my head) of the other instruments.

Children love singing this round as the classroom is divided into five sections, each representing an instrument of the orchestra. As each instrument is introduced, it is heard first as a solo, then joined by the others that have already been heard to produce a harmonious "orchestra."

This is NOT what you are seeking; however, your request sparked a long dormant note in the nether-regions of the mind.

I don't find this in the DT. It is something you MUST see and sing to understand - definitely, in the oral tradition in that sense. It is a grand old camp song. I became familiar with it in 1968 through a chap from New Jersey named Rusty. He also did a great "Efficiency Expert" (the one with the punch line of tying a broom on the rear to sweep the shop out.)

ICH BIEN MUSICANIER requires experience with the material for the leader to get it right. It has been many years but it goes close to this:

Each instrument has a motion.

CHORUS:

Du sie kanne spiele

De fair Tuba

Return to chorus:

Divide the campers into sections. Give them the name of the instrument and a movement. They are to imitate with the appropriate gestures. The added group that plays is followed by all the other groups. For the last time, the entire orchestra is used and all play at once.

Other instruments:
Drums: boom, boom, boom boom boom
Bagpipes: na, na, na, na, na (Scottish tune)
Piano: plink, plink, plink plink plink
Violins: vio, vio, viola

Gargoyle, we did the same thing in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and at school. And if anyone is afraid of the PC aspects of the song -- we were 99% of German descent, and some of us had German spoken regularily at home.

It's great fun, and mimicing the instruments adds to it.

From a UK perspective there are two songs being confused here. "The Orchestra" I sang in a childrens choir in the mid sixties. I think, if I remember correctly, there was a published and arranged version for choirs because we always sang from music in that choir. The lyrics quoted above seem fairly close.

Gargoyles song I know as "I am the Music Man" and sang it in the rugby club in the 70`s. That was the one with the actions, and it actually made it into the charts as a party/disco record in the UK, (with the Dambusters and Match of the Day tunes as verses). Anyone else remember them as I do?

Yes, this is the song I was searching for.
I don't remember the tune for the "trumpets are braying" but the others are there.
I was thinking there were more instruments than that, but maybe it was just grandiosity of childhood. It was fun to sing!

I'm looking for information about this song also.

I do know the drum part: the drum playing two notes and always the same note, dum dum, dum dum, dum dum dum dum dum. Also the trumpet: The trumpet, the trumpet, goes ra ta ta ta ta ta, ra ta ta. The trumpet, the trumpet goes ra ta ta ta ta ta tat.

A school I'm working at gave me a verion of this song with a Bassoon verse: The bassoon that adds the sound to the orchestra... Has anyone heard this before? Sure doesn't sound like something a bassoon would ever play, where as cleverly the clarinet/drum/trumpet verses do...

I have been looking for this song for quite some time now. We used to sing it at summer camp while still in the dining area. The Music Man song reference earlier is closer to what we sang than The Orchestra song, but neither are quite right. I remember it starting out something on the lines of "I am the maestro to a (German or Italian or Austrian) orchestra..." this was sung in a real deep booming voice, then it would introduce each instrument as a solo, and then as stated before slowly add them all together. I remember "piccolo as picc, picc, piccolo, piccolo, piccolo, picc, picc piccolo picca picca piccolo" Tuba's were "umpha, umpha, umpa, umpa, umpha" there were drums, bagpipes, violins, cellos. That is all I can remember, I used to love singing it, no matter what instrument my table had. There were 10-12 cabins and we all had our own table so that means there were 10-12 differenet instruments. Too bad it was over 30 years ago and I can no longer remember enough of it to share it with a group of kids.

The bassoon, it makes a point, a counterpoint, ba-da-da-da-da-da-da-ba-da-da the bassoon, it makes a point a counterpoint ba-da-da-da-da-da-da.

This part is the most difficult in timing and notes- we would fight over it when we'd sing the song on long car rides.
