Lyr Req: Johnny Gone Down To Hilo - Revisited

To start with, yes, I have tried a Digitrad search and checked all the threads and references. And, believe it or not, I couldn't find the version I'm looking for.

I was driving around the northeastern corner of Guam the other day and listening to Roll & Go, the great album put together by Bill Bonyun (thanks again for that, Charley).

anyway, they started the chanty Johnny Gone Down To Hilo and it stuck in my head. But I cannot find the rest of the words. If I had my stuff I could find it easy enough but that stuff won't be here for another couple of weeks.

So, here's what I know:

It's the strangest sight that's ever been seen,
An Arkansas farmer with his sea boots on,

Johnny come down to hilo,
Poor old John,
Oh wake her, oh shake her,
Oh wake that gal with the blue dress on,
Johnny come down to Hilo,
Poor old john.

There are other verses about the kinds of girlfriends the singer has had and verses about the ship and crew.

Any help?

Brett -- it's also on Tom's tape "A Bottle Full for the Shantyman" -- and, guess what, I think we've finally got it successfully translated to CD.

PM me your mailing address.

Have you looked in this thread Lyr Req: Dirty Hog eye man? for a version of JcdtH about the girl?

Well, none of these is the version I know. Linn, I already have Tom's tape. I just need to get it delivered out of bondage, i.e., the packing crates that are currently somewhere between Maine and Guam.

The dirty verses from that other thread fit the tune I know. I will have to learn them but I can't sing them here unless I get in with a bunch of guys drinking late at night. The local cultural environment is not as forgiving of the nature of some of these somgs.

Has the group Roll & Go another CD, besides Outward Bound?

Nope, Roberto, that's the only one so far. They were talking about another before I left but I don't think they've done anything about it yet.

St. Elmo's Fire (an all-woman shanty group from the Pacific Northwest) recorded this one, in a spirited but non-spicy version, and The Boarding Party did the related shanty "The Hog-Eye Man" on their album "'Tis Our Sailing Time." But you probably knew that.

Aloha,
Mark

The song I recorded, "The Gal Asleep With the Blue Dress On" is a close cousin of this one, but markedly different in tempo and use.

I was about to post you the words that Terry collected, but they're so racially extreme in the dialect, I doubt you would want to sing them -- Tom

Last night, as the song ran through my head again, I remembered where I'd heard that version. It was at Mystic and either Marc or Greg or the Boarding Party was singing it. I'm guessing that I'll get the words off their album when my stuff arrives from the States.
