THE ROAD TO DORCHESTER is on the following albums:

The Long Road by Mick Ryan & Pete Harris.

Midnight Feast by Denny Bartley. (There it is attributed to Graham Moore.)

This page about Graham Moore says THE ROAD TO DORCHESTER was written by him and Mick Ryan.

The Road to Dorchester is the A35, watch out for the bypass at Tolpuddle.

Road to Dorchester by Graham Moore & Mick Ryan

Six brave men we've read your story
The trial the grief the pain and the glory
At the hands of the Squire the Whig and the Tory
In England 's pleasant land
But if I could ask you one last question
One last thought for your reflection
Did you lose all hope, pray for protection
On the road to Dorchester.

Chorus: On the road - on the road
By the masters of oppression you were taken from your land
On the road - on the road

The immortal power of freedom took you by the hand
Did you wake with a dread in the dark day dawning
Did the sun force a way through the clouds of the morning
Was the lark on the wing above you soaring freely in the sky
What thoughts did you share what fears were growing
Did you think you'd be home 'fore the cock was crowing
Did you think of the land where you'd be going
On the road to Dorchester.

As you crossed Gray's bridge with the jail ahead
Past the spire of the church, the graves of the dead
Did you feel regret for the things you'd said,
The oath that you had sworn
Were you sure in your heart that your cause was right
Were you firmly resolved to stand and fight
For the right to resist the master's might
And for children yet unborn.

That road was trod before you came
And since you've gone it's been trod again
In trial and grief, glory and pain
In England's pleasant land
The road's still there and so's the town
Where you stood for your rights, and your renown
Is there on the road that you walked down
The road to Dorchester.

If you visit Dorchester in the Summer, and enter the beautiful Borough Gardens, there are oftimes musicians playing concerts, children playing in the fountain, all kind of fun going on.

Above the park is a shady tree lined terrace. Some weekends there sre craft stalls, and food stalls, all kinds of ethnic and world products and local delicacies like Blue Vinny Cheese.

On the opposite side of the terrace is a large imposing house of grey stone, where lived one of the magistrates who condemned the Tolpuddle Martyrs to transportation.

A cracking song! , but as usual on Mudcat when we make a reasonable request for chords we always get a history lesson! I don't want to know about cheese or woosy middle class sports and craft stalls, shady tree lined terraces..

Or at the worst some name dropping person giving their opinion on someone they have heard singing the song...

Please, please, please.. I have the words!!! I am having difficultly with the chords..again chords not words...
Have you got that..chords please..

Well, you could try contacting Pete Harris , since he was performing with Mick Ryan in the show for which the song was written 20 years ago and he was still playing the chords last Friday.

Why not just work them out for yourself. Just listened to it and it's in D so the others will be G and A, plus a Bm or an F#m if you're being clever. It's not difficult......
