02 Aug 03 - 05:43 AM (#995448) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Peter K (Fionn) Welcome to Mudcat, Synbyn. I was hoping from your post that a crowd of new mudcatters had arrived with you from the Sussex-Kent borders, but it looks like you're on your own. So far.... I'm assuming that this is the place that's close to Wittersham? I'm in what's left of Sherwood Forest - a trip too far, alas. |

02 Aug 03 - 05:46 PM (#995656) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: synbyn Sorry leadfingers- asking about the weekend of 3-5 october, know lots of people drop in & want to be sure to see them- thanks fionn, am from the kent-sussex borders but further north- new kid on the block but several mudcatters from kent i can guess at. Tenterden is pleasant Wealden setting & has had preserved train ride with folkies in special carriage singing their way down the Rother valley, very atmospheric. Used to stop at Wittersham Road (4 miles from Wittersham!) now goes on to Bodiam castle. As far as I know, programme yet to come out, assuming sat session will take place as usual |

04 Sep 03 - 02:33 AM (#1012492) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: The Barden of England I'll be there. I'll be hosting the evening session on Friday at the White Lion and the Saturday lunchtime session at the Eight Bells so I hope to see you there synbyn. Here's the link to the programme by the way for those who want to know what's going on http://www.folkspots.btinternet.co.uk/trust/fest03/events03.htm#top |

04 Sep 03 - 03:20 AM (#1012500) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: GUEST,Dave Masterson Thanks for the festival website link John, was just about to post it myself. One highlight of the weekend will be a presentation by Shirley Collins on folksong collecting in Sussex. Another interesting guest is Miriam Erasmus from South Africa. Anyone who was around the folk scene in the 70's will know her as Miriam Backhouse. Takes me back to my days at the Coach House, Farningham - showing my age now! See you all there |

04 Sep 03 - 03:40 AM (#1012506) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: treewind Excellent - except all those Saturday lunchtime sessions and Shirley Collins overlap - I'll want to be in three places at once. I'm looking forward to seeing Kendrick too - haven't seen him since he came back from Japan. Anahata |

04 Sep 03 - 04:31 AM (#1012518) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Bryant Hi Dave - I can remember the very first evening at the Coach House, nice to see you on Mudcat - why not become a member rather than guest - it doesn't cost anything. Linda and I should be at Tenterden as usual - hope that there's a bit more happening in the way of singarounds on Sunday this year. |
|
04 Sep 03 - 06:27 AM (#1012565) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Masterson Hi Dave & Linda - as you can see I'm now a member. Maybe we should start a reminiscence thread for the Coach House. As regards Sunday, Bob & Kath Drage are hosting a session from 11am upstairs at the 8 Bells with guests and floor singers, and also a final singaround in the bar of the 8 Bells at 8.30 in the evening. If you're at a loss, take a trip on the folk train on the Kent & East Sussex Railway - the only place with more hot air than a bunch of folkies! |

08 Sep 03 - 10:29 AM (#1014756) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: The Barden of England There also seems to be a sort of 'do it yourself' session in the 'White Lion' from 12noon on Sunday. Interesting!! |

23 Sep 03 - 11:13 AM (#1023512) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Bryant John - at Walton FF you mentioned something about not being able to run a singaround at Tenterden (Sat night ?) and suggested that Linda and I took it over. Is that still on ? Dave - glad to see you've joined up. Any chance of seeing you this Thursday (25/9) for our session at The Black Horse, Stanstead ? BTW Linda's Mudcat name is Essex Girl. |

24 Sep 03 - 07:54 AM (#1024258) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: The Barden of England Dave - No organised session at the Eight Bells, but then again I don't think there ever has been, and that's never stopped things happening before. I'm already hosting the evening session on Friday at the White Lion and the Saturday lunchtime session at the Eight Bells, and due to unforseen circumstances I'll be introducing Joe Stead on Sunday lunchtime at the William Caxton, so I'll probably be taking a breather on Saturday evening. |

24 Sep 03 - 08:43 AM (#1024283) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Masterson Sorry Dave - we're now living down near Ashford, so it's a long round trip to the Black Horse when you have to be up at 6am the next morning! Hope to see you at Tenderden. By the way, we went to see Headcorn Morris a short while back, and a couple dancing that evening (whose names escape me) used to be regulars at the old Black Horse Singers Club back in the 80's! Small world eh? |

30 Sep 03 - 05:38 PM (#1026777) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: synbyn apparently 1st folk train is 2.20 sunday- last year the satnite acoustic session was impromptu in 8 bells with Die Erben & rakes of Rochester among others, so expect there'll be something. |

01 Oct 03 - 05:03 AM (#1027026) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Bryant We expect to get down Friday evening - I'll probably stay until Sunday afternoon, but Linda will have to leave earlier on Sunday morning. |

01 Oct 03 - 06:36 AM (#1027072) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: The Barden of England The trains are offfering a 50% reduction on Saturday and Sunday for weekend ticket holders, but I think you're correct in that the train with artists etc seems to be on Sunday only. I remember Flora, Andy & co striking up on Saturday evening, but I think I was resting between engagements at the festival last year too. I'll probably drop in though. |

06 Oct 03 - 05:58 AM (#1030342) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Bryant Thank you for running it John - it was definitely one of the best song & music sessions I've ever been to. Linda and I got there at 11.45am and finally left at about 12.30 Sunday morning (OK we did pop out for a couple of hours to have a meal). Wonderful singing and music all day. There were at least six mudcatters there John, Synbyn, My Guru, Dead Horse, Essex Girl, myself, and of course you - although I'm sure others dropped in as well. |

06 Oct 03 - 09:15 AM (#1030467) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: The Barden of England Dave - It was 6 wasn't it. I've spoken with quite a few people who thought the same as you. Personally I've often said that once a session gets rolling, why stop it because the programme gives a cut off time. I've never understood why people do stop them, and I know Alan Castle was, and is, more than happy with it to continue, as was the Landlord and staff. It's one of the reasons I still can't get enthusiastic about Broadstairs. I know it's a great time, but I really, really want the oportunity to go on and on as happens at the Bedford in Sidmouth, and like it did in the Eight Bells on Saturday. Just wish I could persuade somebody on the Broadstairs committee to consider it. |
|
06 Oct 03 - 11:01 AM (#1030553) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: GUEST,Lynne Heraud I think you have to take into account the preferences of the Landlord/Landlady etc. However, at Broadstairs Festival (which is a fantastic festival with many many opportunities to participate) there is a late night session every night up at the school which can literally carry on all night if you want it to. |
|
06 Oct 03 - 11:01 AM (#1030554) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Bryant Linda and I are in total agreement with you John. There have been several occasions when the session organiser has decreed that it has finished and we've carried it on and had a great time. One organiser (no names - he's a mudcatter) did say that the reason for ending on time was so that the session didn't keep people away from other festival events. There is also the fact that some publicans (Broadstairs, Rochester etc) are afraid that having a folk session going on too long will scare away their regular customers and don't want to have to turn off the juke box or TV for more than a few hours. On Saturday, I noticed plenty of "regular customers" who were obviously enjoying our all day session, and the landlord didn't seem to have any complaints. I have to admit that we were lucky to have the number, quality and diversity of performers to enable us to keep such a great session going so long. Last year's session during Pete and Val Hicks' locum tenens at "The Fen Bell" was a pretty good one - lets see what we can manage there on (I thinks it's) the 9th November. |

06 Oct 03 - 11:17 AM (#1030569) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: The Barden of England Hi Lynne - Well done on Friday night by the way, it was great to hear you. The problem with the school sessions is that you have to be on the campsite, which means a full season ticket (or so I'm led to believe). I'm one that likes to go to the odd thing that might take my fancy, so a week-long ticket for me is a complete waste, not only that but living only about half an hour away I can hit home if I've not partaken of the ale. I understand the landlord/landlady thing, but Sidmouth and Whitby have venues where it does go on all day, and I've yet to find one in Broadstairs. It's only personal preference of course, and I do agree that Broadstairs books some superb people. I just wish I could get excited about it. |

06 Oct 03 - 03:36 PM (#1030753) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: GUEST,Ralphie @Work Re Duration of sessions. Popped down for the the Sun Lunch sesh in the White Lion (1200-1500) Run, very ably, and democratically by Vic Smith (Cheers mate!) He had to get off to another gig at 1500, but just let the rest of us carry on...!! By about 5, the few of us left had to get on to do other things, so, the afternoon came to an amicable close, but, no pressure was applied by the bar staff at any time to stop, etc. All in all, just what a session should be. And got to meet Bill Prince again for the first time in many a long year! If the 8 Bells sesh was as good, then trebles all round for landlords and organisers alike! |

07 Oct 03 - 09:09 AM (#1031189) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: Dave Masterson Great to hear all the positive feedback - Eileen and I had the most fabulous weekend. On Sat morning/lunchtime we were on duty in the Information caravan and had a grandstand view of the Appalachian dancers - superb! They really held their audience - many thanks to them. Lynne – I didn't get to thank you after the Sea Song/Shanty session on Sat so I'm taking the opportunity now. Have run singarounds in the past but never a session with so many well-known guests, so we were a little nervous. We needn't have been – you were all 'pussycats' and gave 110%. One of the great things about festivals is that apart from the music/song etc. you get to see faces you haven't seen for a while, some from about 20 years ago! Dave – sorry we only bumped into you briefly outside the Vine – a bit like ships in the night, so glad you enjoyed the 8 Bells session. Hope to see everyone next year! |

10 Oct 03 - 03:33 PM (#1033322) Subject: RE: Tenterden Folk Day From: synbyn amen to that! Great sessions all weekend, so thanks to all who made them so. Even guests coming down from the concert to sing along & do a turn themselves! It's been a tremendous summer for the festivals- seems like all have seen bigger turnouts - Faversham was packed- so perhaps there is a move towards real music again. Certainly there's nothing like the harmonies & goodwill that we've seen. See you all again soon... |
