"The sentence by a court-martial of two years' hard labour on some player for singing the "Felons of our Land," makes my blood boil. It has been sung for 50 years - since Arthur Forrester wrote it. And from : http://indigo.ie/~kfinlay/Tim%20Healy/healy8.htm ... Arthur Forrester, who often called at Barry's to meet him, then was organizer for Southern England. Forrester had also served in the French Foreign Legion in 1870-1 under Bourbaki. To a lad of 17, as I was, their adventures rivalled those of Sindbad the Sailor. ... Forrester was a writer of ballads, one of which, "The Felons our Land," was widely sung. In 1918, 50 years after its publication, a London Hebrew got six months from a court-martial in the West of Ireland for chanting it. |

Above are the first and fourth verses according to Danny Doyle and Terence Folan in their book "The gold sun of Irish freedom". The verses that you give, Ard, are their 2nd and 3rd. |

My old friend Bill, long since departed, served up a treat when with his glass raised on high he dramatcally sang The Felons`, slow and with feeling, God rest his Soul, and once again thank you George and Tim. What is the melody usually used. It seems, at first blush, as though it would lay easy on "Nation Once Again" with slight adjustment. |
12 Aug 03 - 02:50 PM (#1000993) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Felons of our land From: ard mhacha I have Francie Brolly singing it on a new CD which I bought to-day and he sings it unaccompained and very well, but the melody isn`t like a "Nation once again". Listening right now the melody sounds like "Erins Flag", Francie Brolly sings it very slow, and that is the way I have always heard it. The record label is M.C.P.S, Derry Records, title Irish Songs of Freedom. Featuring Barleycorn,Anne and Francie Brolly, and Ray McAreavey/Wolfhound. 3CD Set. Ard Mhacha |
