08 Aug 03 - 06:24 PM (#999148) Subject: Lyr Req: Procol Harem Conquistador, Maze or Place From: GUEST,NOTHAMAMA I have found two different lyrics in "Conquistador" by Procol Harem: To Wit: "I can se no PLACE to unwind" OR "I can see no MAZE to unwind". Which is it? PLACE or MAZE to unwind? (I always thought it was place, but maze seems to make more sense. |

08 Aug 03 - 07:09 PM (#999169) Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: CONQUISTADOR (from Procol Harum) From: DonMeixner I've just recently rediscovered this tune. A favorite from many years ago. Don "Conquistador" (Gary Brooker - Keith Reid) [Note: this is the arrangement from the first album, not the remake with the Edmonton Symphony.] Verse 1: distorted guitar, doubled with bass: Gm C7 F F7/Eb v v v v v v v v v v v v v v ---------|-----------------|-----------------|----------------- ---------|-----------------|-----------------|----------------- ----(0-2-|-3)*-------------|-----------------|----------------- -----3-4-|-5---------------|-------------2-3-|-------------2-1- ---5-----|-------------5-4-|-3---------------|----------------- ---------|-----------------|-----------------|----------------- * guitar plays higher line on 2nd repeat of each verse Conquistador your stallion stands in need of company Gm C7 And like some angel's haloed brow F F7/Eb You reek of purity G Cm I see your armor plated breast F Gm Has long since lost its sheen G Cm And in your death mask face F Gm There are no signs which can be seen Chorus: Gm Eb7 And though I hoped for something to find Gm Eb7 Gm I could see no place to unwind Verse 2: Conquistador a vulture sits, upon your silver sheath And in your rusty scabbard now, the sand has taken seed And though your jewel-encrusted blade Has not been plundered still The sea has washed across your face And taken of its fill [repeat chorus] Verse 3: Conquistador there is no time, I must pay my respect And though I came to jeer at you I leave now with regret And as the gloom begins to fall I see there is no, only all Though you came with sword held high You did not conquer, only die [repeat chorus, 2X] organ solo: Gm Eb7 [4X] / / / / / / / / [repeat chorus; end cold on Gm] -- another ace 60's tab from Andrew Rogers |

I have loved this song for so long but forgot about it because I had no hope of figuring out the chords. It's time to try again to revive this song of the hopelessness of the indiginous peoples in the face of European encroachment. Living in Guam this is a real and ever present problem. |

08 Aug 03 - 09:04 PM (#999219) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Procol Harem Conquistador, Maze or Place From: michaelr Not to be nitpicky, but it's Procol Harum, not Harem. I believe the phrase is Latin for "far from these"? The song is linked inextricably in my mind with Werner Herzog's great film "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" with Klaus Kinski -- they must have come out around the same time. Cheers, Michael |

09 Aug 03 - 03:28 PM (#999465) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Procol Harem Conquistador, Maze or Place From: mousethief I would have liked this song better if he had pronounced "Conquistador" properly. Con-kwis-ta-dor just doesn't cut it. Aside from that it's a kick-ass tune, and the version with the symphony orchestra is simply brilliant. "Whiter Shade of Pale" pales in comparison. According to Joel Whitburn, the name means "beyond these things." Conquistador was released as a single in 1972. Alex |

09 Aug 03 - 08:04 PM (#999490) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Procol Harem Conquistador, Maze or Place From: DonMeixner The lyrics and chords I supplied for "Conquistador" are a cut and paste from OLGA which can be found by going to Google and searching OLGA. I have since learned that I am not suppose to freely distribute any thing from OLGA so in the future I won't. This I learned by reading thre small print at the bottom of the page. I appologize for this misstep and hope it won't cause trouble either for the people who run OLGA or The Mudcat Forum. Don |

Why do we never get an answer when we're knocking at your door... I still don't have an authoritative answer, lyric searches have turned up the same two choices...I have seen the tab with "place" Don found, but also other sources which show "maze". And Alex, who is Joel Whitburn? Would he know? Better yet, does anyone know how to contact Gary Brooker or Keith Reid? I would take their word for it. NOTHAMAMA |
