10 Aug 03 - 07:58 PM (#999939) Subject: BS: John's Quiz From: Nigel Parsons Yet another of my quizzes. Some questions are decidedly Anglo-centric, whilst other have a US bias. As usual, please avoid answering questions in the thread. I will respond to PMs, and all answers will be posted in about 4 days. The title of the quiz should be sufficient to start you off. CHEERS Nigel 1 By what name is Marrion Morrison better remembered? 2 Which English poet (1572-1631)is remembered for his passionate & erotic poems "Songs & Sonnets" & his "Satires" & his "Elegies"? 3 By what name is Karol Josef Wojtyla better known? 4 Who was the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia? 5 Which Welsh fly-half was capped 25 times between 1966 & 1972? 6 What is generally accepted as the most northerly place in mainland Britain? 7 Who is best remembered for the big flourish of his signature on the American declaration of independence? 8 Who duetted on the 1978 hit "Summer Nights"? (for 2 points) 9 What name is given to a large narrow necked bottle, often used for fermenting wine? 10 Whose head was requested by Salome? 11 Who led the attack on the federal arsenal at"Harpers Ferry" in 1859 although he is best remembered in song? 12 Who, according to the legends, fought Robin Hood with quarterstaffs (I would have said 'quarterstaves' but my spell-checker got uppity!) over the right to cross a bridge? 13 Who was 'The Man in Black' in Folsom Prison? 14 Often thought of as "Three old ladies", what was the original problem in "Oh dear, what can the matter be"? 15 What was the title of Jimmy Dean's 1961 hit about a mining disaster? 16 By what name is Reg Dwight better known? 17 Which character was played by a snake in the Disney version of "Robin Hood"? 18 What was John Leyton's only No 1 hit (1961)? 19 Who was assassinated on December 8th 1980? 20 Who composed the theme music used for "Monty Python's Flying Circus"? 21 Which Cardiff born striker has played for Cardiff, Swansea, Liverpool & Wales? 22 Who composed "The Blue Danube" & "Tales From The Vienna Woods"? 23 Which actor plated Mr Humphries in "Are You Being Served?"? 24 Who is shown in common iconography holding a poisoned chalice? And Yes, I realise I used "Anglo centric" to cover Wales, it is more recognisable! Nigel |

Google only needs to recognize words! Waiting to hear from Nigel. I got 20 right the first time, but I think I've come up with the rest. |

11 Aug 03 - 07:38 PM (#1000524) Subject: RE: BS: John's Quiz From: Snuffy If the question had been about a baseball player called John, it would have been us rightsiders who were clueless: Fly Half - rugby player, wearing #10 on his shirt, a vital link between offense and defence Capped - represented his country in an international match, mostly against England Ireland Scotland France Australia New Zealand South Africa but possibly also Italy Rumania Canada Japan Fiji Western Samoa Tonga or even USA |
|
11 Aug 03 - 07:41 PM (#1000528) Subject: RE: BS: John's Quiz From: Nigel Parsons MichaelR: a 'fly-half' is a position in the game of Rugby (compare with the first person to take the ball from a scrimmage in US football) a player is 'capped' (given a national cap) for playing for his own country in an international match. Hence the question is about someone who played for Wales (to the west of England, and a separate country!) 25 times in the same position, within the stated dates. A google search using " caps 25 Wales & fly half" will get the answer Nigel |
