Hi there
You've all helped me here before so I'm hoping to get your help again.
My Dad (he's 80) has just bought himself a new hi-fi system and loves a new CD he's got with the music soundtrack from the opera created in the 1940's called Carmen Jones. I think the lyrics were by Hammerstein Jr?
I've tried to find the lyrics to some of the songs for him but no luck!! Can anyone offer any advice?
A few of the song titles are 1.) Dat's love   2.)Whizzin' away along de track   3.) De Cards don't lie.......
Thanks so much
Best regards from Susan :-)

As the whole thing was a parody/remake of Bizet's Carmen, the first that comes to mind is the retelling of the toreador's song.

"Stand up and fight until you hear the bell,
Stand toe to toe, trade blow for blow
Keep punching til you hear that final bell,
Show them folks what you know.
Until you hear that bell, the final bell,
Stand up and fight like hell!"

Open to corrections, as this is from memory

DAT'S LOVE
(Habanera)
Music: Georges Bizet; words: Oscar Hammerstein II

Love's a baby dat grows up wild,
An' he don' do what you want him to;
Love ain' nobody's angel child,
An' he won' pay any mind to you.
One man gives me his diamon' stud,
An' I won' give him a cigarette.
One man treats me like I was mud--
An' what I got dat man c'n get.
Dat's love!
Dat's love!
Dat's love!
Dat's love!
You go for me
An' I'm taboo,
But if you're hard to get, I go for you,
An' if I do,
Den you are through, boy,
My baby, dat's de end of you.
So take your cue, boy,
Don' say I didn' tell you true.
I tol' you truly,
If I love you dat's de end of you!
When your lovebird decides to fly,
Dere ain' no door dat you c'n close.
She jus' pecks you a quick good-bye
An' flicks de salt from her tail, an' goes.
If you listen, den you'll get taught,
An' here's your lesson for today:
If I chase you, den you'll get caught,
But once I got you I go away!
Dat's love!
Dat's love!
Dat's love!
Dat's love!

Of the book LYRICS, by Oscar Hammerstein II, amazon.com sez:

This volume, edited by William Hammerstein, encompasses lyrics from Oscar Hammerstein's entire canon; from the early "Indian Love Call" written in 1924 with Otto Harbach and Rudolph Friml, to his final song, "Edelweiss," written with his long-time collaborator Richard Rodgers in 1959.

Thanks a lot!
I'm sure glad to be,
To be where I c'n see
So many friends o' mine.
How've I been doin'?
How've I been doin'?
If you really wanta know de truth,
I'm doin' fine!
Seventeen
Decisions in a row,
An' only five on points;
De res' was all K.O.~
Jackson an' Johnson,
Murphy an' Bronson,
One by one dey come,
An' one by one to dreamland dey go.
How's it done?
You ask me, how's it done?
I got a trainer man
Who taught me all I need to know.
Sure feels good to have him in my corner,
Hear his voice a-whisp'rin' low:

"Big boy, remember,
You mus' remember...
Stan' up an' fight until you hear de bell,
Stan' toe to toe,
Trade blow fer blow,
Keep punchin' till you make yer punches tell,
Show dat crowd watcher know!
Until you hear dat bell,
Dat final bell,
Stan' up an' fight like hell!"

When you fight
Out in de open air,
In a patch o' light
De ring looks small an' white.
Out in de blackness,
Out in de blackness,
You c'n feel a hun'erd thousan' eyes
Fillin' de night.
Cigarettes
Are blinkin' in de dark,
An' makin' polka dots
Aroun' de baseball park,
People are quiet~
Den dere's a riot!
Someone t'rows a punch
An' plants it right smack on de mark...
Somebody's hurt,
You kinda think it's you.
You hang across de ropes~
Da's all you want to do.
Den you look aroun' an' see your trainer's eyes,
Beggin' you to see it through,
Dey say, "Remember,
Big Boy, remeber~

Stan' up an' fight until you hear de bell,
Stan' toe to toe,
Trade blow fer blow,
Keep punchin' till you make yer punches tell,
Show dat crowd watcher know!
Until you hear dat bell,
Dat final bell,
Stan, up an' fight like hell!"

Parody of Carmen? I think not. That's like calling West Side Story a parody of Romeo and Juliet. This Carmen is set the story in WWII South and followed the original quite well. It was groundbreaking in that it was the first big budget film with an all-Negro (to use the term of the day) cast. Although it was not the first time a major studio made all-black cast movies (Green Pastures and Stormy Weather), it was the first to transpose material across racial lines. A few years later Anna Lucasta would be remade with an all-black cast starring Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis, Jr.

What about the lyrics for "Beat Out that Rhythm on a Drum" (The Gypsy Song)?

If anyone could help with that you'd ba doing a one man band a big favor!

Thanks!
