Shopping > Music has sound samples of 2 recordings, one by the Washboard Rhythm Kings from 1931 and another Dixieland version by the Bourbon Street Stompers. Unfortunately, neither sample contains any words. The WRK version (which definitely sounds like the more interesting of the two) starts out with a little scat singing, leading me to suspect that some words may come up later in the recording. Here's the track listing for the album, "Washboard Rhythm Kings, Vol. 1" 1. Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone 2. Minnie the Moocher 3. One More Time 4. Walkin' My Baby Back Home 5. A Porter's Love Song to a Chambermaid 6. Every Man for Himself 7. Please Tell Me 8. You Rascal You 9. Crooked World Blues 10. Call of the Freaks 11. I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby 12. Because I'm Yours Sincerely 13. Star Dust 14. You Can't Stop Me from Loving You 15. Boola Boo 16. Who Stole the Lock 17. Blues in My Heart 18. Just One More Chance 19. Many Happy Returns of the Day 20. Shoot ' Em 21. Wake 'Em Up 22. Georgia on My Mind 23. Pepper Steak 24. If You Don't Love Me There's another album by Kay Starr, called "Superb Starr", listed at Barnes&Noble, which contains the song. I transcribed these words from a sound sample there: ... but I still wish you luck with a heart that's sincere. I won't bring any presents to you. I ... [There were a few more words, unintelligible to me.] Unfortunately, searching for those words with Google still didn't bring up any results. |
18 Jul 08 - 08:02 PM (#2392606) Subject: Lyr Add: MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY From: GUEST,lindyhopgirl I have this album (WRK) and here are the lyrics from this version as near as I can tell: Many happy returns of the day, And there isn't much more I can say. I recall with a tear you've been married one year, But I'll still wish you love with a heart that's sincere. I would bring any presents to you, I gave you up (?), what more could I do? I'll just send a bouquet, with a card that will say, Many happy returns of the day.

Why would I wish someone a bunch of them? Why not just say Happy Birthday? I know what that means at least. Personally, I don't want to have any happy returns. I want some gifts that I won't have to return, happy, sad, or otherwise! Maybe you should just give me money........... Spaw |
10 Oct 10 - 05:45 PM (#3003982) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Many Happy Returns of the Day From: Jim Dixon Well, I guess it means, "May this day happily return many times for you," in other words, "May you have many more birthdays (or anniversaries), and may they all be happy." But I agree, it's an awkward phrase, and I don't think I would ever use it. |

Here's how it comes out. MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY (Al Dubin and Joe Burke, 1931) One year has passed since you walked up the aisle. One year since you said, "I do." I'm still heartbroken, but You still can smile For I send these greetings to you: Many happy returns of the day, And there isn't much more I can say. I recall with a tear you've been married a year, But I still wish you luck with a heart that's sincere. I won't bring any presents to you. I gave you up. What more could I do? I'll just send a bouquet, with a card that will say, "Many happy returns of the day." [whistling & instrumental] I won't bring any presents to you. I gave you up. What more could I do? I'll just send a bouquet, with a card that will say, "Many happy returns of the day." 1931 Ben Alley recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ15AdTQxMI Here's a barbershop version by "The Boston Common" with slightly different lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRNQW9oYfSI This day will always be dear to my heart 'Cause it means so much to you Though we're together or though we're apart I'll make this old greeting seem new: Many happy returns of the day, And there isn't much more I can say. When this day comes each year, may I always be near, To wish you good luck with a heart that's sincere. May you always be happy this day, And if I should be far, far away, I'll just send a bouquet, with a card that will say, "Many happy returns of the day." |
