19 Aug 03 - 09:44 AM (#1004615) Subject: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: Steve Parkes It's been getting on my nervews for a number of years, and is becoming more frustrating even than my attempts to play it! I've heard it only occasionally over the years (since the 70s, and as recently as last year), played as a third tune after "Boys of Bluehill" and "Harvest home" ... and that's all I can tell you. I've written the tune down, but I don't know how I can pass it on -- other than as a midi in a PM, if anyone thinks they might recognise it. The only other thing I can say is the second part is almost all triplets, and it as a range of almost two octaves: G-e'. Any constructive suggestions welcomed! Steve |

Reckon on eight quavers in a bar, and put the names of notes where they occur, and a . for where there isnt one. Eg a rising scale GABC at one note per main beat in a 4/4 bar would come out as /G.A.B.C./ Give us the first couple of bars and we'll have a go. |

19 Aug 03 - 10:08 AM (#1004640) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: Steve Parkes Definitely not "Off to California" (that's aneasy one!) and pretty sure it's not "Rights of man" either, but thanks for looking, Guest. I did try Googling it myself, with similar results -- or the same results, I suppose! Steve |

19 Aug 03 - 10:24 AM (#1004656) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: treewind It's a little bit like The Royal Belfast in the wrong key - should be higher up in D. That has three parts, and the THIRD part is almost al triplets. Try looking that up on JC's tunefinder, or try this: X: 0 T: Royal Belfast Hornpipe M: 4/4 L: 1/8 K: D ag | 3)faf df Ad FA | DF Ad f2 ef | 3)gbg eg ce AF | GA BG E2 ag | ....etc Anahata |

19 Aug 03 - 12:19 PM (#1004727) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: greg stephens I'm with anahata: starts off quite like a version of the Belfast(aka Millicents favourite in Geordieland), and that has got an all triplet third part. Are your triplets all decorated descending scales, Steve? |

19 Aug 03 - 12:21 PM (#1004729) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: Davetnova It sounds like the Sweep's hornpipe, three parts with the last part all descending triplets. |

19 Aug 03 - 12:25 PM (#1004732) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: greg stephens Sweep's Hornpipe is another name for Belfast/Millicents. Also aka The manchester Hornpipe(in common with at least seven other distinct tunes!). |

19 Aug 03 - 12:25 PM (#1004733) Subject: RE: Tune Req: Hornpipe, name unknown From: Steve Parkes Well done, Anahata - you've made an old man very happy! Yes, it's The Royal Belfast, aka The Belfast, aka The Sweeps', aka Millicent's Favourite. Ironic that it should have all those names, and I never knew any of them! (Although "Sweeps" rings a muffled bell.) I shall have to learn that middle part now. (Greg: yes!) Thanks, everyone! Steve |
