She has a pleasant soft style with intelligent lyrics. She has two albums out - the second just came out this week. I'm including links (hope they work) to her website and to sites that will enable you to listen to song clips. She's one of those singers that I had to hear just once to get forever hooked. I believe that this song was written well within living memory as a result of a challenge to write a country song and as far as I know has normally been sung to the tune used at the time. Given that I have been collecting American folk and country records for decades, I am surprised that I have not come across her before this. Better late than never - what a gem! I have managed to secure 3 of her albums here in Oz. I am particularly impressed by her song, 'The dozens'. It is perhaps of some topical relevance with the recent death of John Lewis and the 'black lives matter' movement. She dedicated ’The Dozens’ to Larry Devine, the author of ‘Black Culture and Black Consciousness’. Levine wrote about ’the dozens’, an urban verbal game where people trade insults about each other’s mothers. The person who gets visibly angry first loses the game. Levine argued that people played the game to steel themselves against the brutality of the world. Evidently, Caroline had a personal friendship with Devine. There is a wealth of talented musicians performing traditional music and their own songs. I reckon Caroline Herring is up there with Kate Wolf, Linda Thompson, Diana Jones, Karen Dalton et alia. For a mix of traditional and original songs by a female artist, check out the recent album by Katie Theasby of whom there has been no mention in this forum. I'm sure you would enjoy her recordings.
