Lyr ADD: July You're a Woman (John Stewart)

I'm trying to find information and lyrics to a folk song I remember from the early sixties. I remember it from around 1963 or so, and connect it with one of the Kingston Trio but that might not be right. It contains the lyric thread: "and I have not been known as the Saint of San Joaquin..." and also "July, you're a woman, more than anyone I've ever known..." Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Kiva - the song is "July, You're a Woman," by John Stewart. I don't know if he recorded it with the Kingston Trio, but it has been available on various collections as a solo recording. I found the lyrics at a John Stewart Web page - click here.

JULY, YOU'RE A WOMAN
by John Stewart

I can't hold it on the road
Where you're sitting right beside me
And I'm drunk out of my mind
Merely from the fact that you are here.

And I have not been known
As the Saint of San Joaquin
And I'd just a soon right now
Pull on over to the side of the road
And show you what it means

La da da da da da da
La da da da da da da
July, you a woman, more than anyone I've ever known.

Yeah I can't hold my eyes
On the white line out before me
When your hand is on my collar
And you're talking in by ear.

Oh, and I have been around
With a gypsy girl named Shannon
Daughter of the devil
It is strange that I should mention that to you
'Cause I haven't thought of her in years.

La da da da da da da
La da da da da da da
July, you a woman, more than anyone I've ever known.
Oh, I can't stand this - I just checked CDNow to see if the song is available on CD. Yes, it is - on recordings by Robert Goulet and Pat Boone. There are also three John Stewart CD's that have this song.

Thanks a million! This one has stumped me for many years. Of course, it had to have been a John Stewart lyric! My early teen years seem to be a soundtrack of his music.

Eddy Arnold did a cover of this, released on 8 track in 1967. I have been looking for the lyrics, as well.

Pat Boone, believe it or not, also butchered it.

I've never heard this song, but looking at the lyrics I can't help but think that the chorus should go...

And I have not been known
As the Saint of San Joaquin
And I'd just a soon right now
Pull on over to the side of the road
And show you what I mean

(not "And the Saint...) Anyone?

C

I've listened to a couple of clips now, and I'm convinced. Found a few other typos too. Pop lyrics sites are so careless!

I have it on vinyl on John Stewart's "California Bloodlines" album. Terrific album, btw.

Now, if I only still had a turntable....

Micky and the Motorcars version is by far the best. Check them out live if you ever get a chance.

There are similarities between "July, You're a woman" and Paul Simon's "The Boxer".
I wonder if the one that came first ( which ever that was), influenced the other one?

Also recorded by a band out of Oklahoma in the 70's called Mountain Smoke. Lead vocals by none other that Vince Gill and truly outstanding.

"July, You're A Woman" first appeared on the John Stewart & Buffy Ford album "Signals Through The Glass", released in 1968 on the Capitol label. "The Boxer" by Simon & Garfunkel was released as a single the following year on the Columbia label, and then included on the Columbia LP "Bridge Over Troubled Waters."

John Stewart had previously described much of "Signals Through The Glass" as being largely a concept album, many of the songs being derived from the paintings of Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth. For instance, the song "Nebraska Widow" is Stewart's interpretation of Andrew Wyeth's painting "Christina's World,"while the song "Draft Age" is based upon Jamie Wyeth's similarly entitled painting.

And I have no idea what painting (if any!) inspired "July, You're A Woman."
