I sang rather tiredly throughout (the heat got to me) but I enjoyed many things from a well-balanced guest list. The American visitors Debby McClatchy, and Sara Grey and Keiron Means, did themselves proud, gaining great receptions. Keiron is a real discovery. He has ability and style to burn and shows a deep understanding of his music. Sara must be very proud of him. It was good too to hear a number of young people, teens & twenties, singing in sessions and in concert,and singing well. But the absolute shining light for me was Viv Legg, sister of the well-known Vic Legg, a grand singer himself. Viv has only recently started to come out to sing and it's lucky for us she has. She is of traveller stock, with a wonderful style of singing and a clear and lovely voice that she uses without pretence. She is a genuine traditional singer whom everyone should hear. I hope that someone like Veteran or Musical Traditions will record her, and soon. I have been around for a long time and I did not expect to be knocked sideways by a 'new' singer ever again. But Viv did the trick. The sun shone brightly all through a grand weekend of song, music and dance. It was terrific. Congratulations to the organisers and their volunteer helpers. 28 Aug 03 - 04:12 AM (#1009443) Subject: RE: cornwall folk festival From: Hawker I was really disappointed not to get to any of the Sara Grey & Keiron Means performances, but I agree, Burl, Keiron is Fantastic - and such a nice chap too! Viv Legg's singing has been as much a revelation for her as it has for us, she is quite shy and retiring and is quite taken aback by her success, though the rest of us are not at all surprised. Again, a lovely lady to talk to, too - and she has some lovely stories to tell about her family. I was lucky enough to hear her sing and enjoyed every minute of it. It is good to hear feedback on this festival, which was run on a shoestring, none of the artists were paid for their services, and this was, in a way a bid for survival, I think a big thank you should go out to all those who took part in whatever way - the artists, the stewards, and the people who came, bought tickets and made the festival happen! She is a delightful lady. It was sad though to hear her say that she was a Romany speaker but her daughters didn't want to know it. Children don't always want to carry on things of their parents I know, but it will be a pity if this area of Romany speaking fades out. I doubt that Viv wants a career in the folk scene, but it's my hope that she will be coaxed out to sing a little more often, for al our sakes. Burl. |

Travelled down after visiting Whitby FF for the umpteenth time Really enjoyed Thorn and Roses, expecially in the Ship The session with Trigg Morris and Vic Legg ?? pub the're all goers and the 50s/60s music/skiffel board etc Little seen altho not fault of the organisers was Ted Egan for Oz spent some time with him and Doc Rowe ~ dynamic guy (I mean Ted) Thanks to Lynne Heraud, Keith Kendrick, Sylvia Needham, Jim Bassett et al. Also to Roy Harris and Michael O'Leary Johns for looking after me !! |

He sang at the Carbaret Club on Monday night and I thought he was brilliant! Doc does have his dynamic moments too!!!!! Are the ??? after Vic due to the confusion between Vic and Viv? They are brother and sister. Burl, Kids tend to need to do a little growing before they investigate their roots, there is still hope that Viv's children may want to take up the family tradition, it would be sad if they come to it too late to learn all that they could. Get it dowm on tape Doc!! I gave the town ghall a miss, I had 2 VERY tired kids who behaved extremely well at the Cabaret Club, Amber even joined Moe and I in singing The Nightingale - one of my favourite moments! Glad that there was a goodending to the festival, that's been missing for a few years! Where do I get to? Well we go to Trewarmett sometimes, and Launceston, occasionally to Bideford Folk Club, Don't tend to go to Bodmin ;) and we play and sng together at home, with our neighbours You Must come up one evening for a sesh! 29 Aug 03 - 07:20 AM (#1010136) Subject: RE: cornwall folk festival From: GUEST,Ray Padgett The ?? was the name of the pub Vic & Trigg performed in Earl something ?, I'm sure Doc has his moments ~ he is in the process of moving to Sheffield, more my neck of the woods and where his archives are, he is abit of a nomad, but very very knowledgeable on folk customs, events people etc, every bit worthy of his honorary Doctorate Vic and Viv connection now understood and that Viv's 2 (?)daughters not presently interested in the travellers songs Wadebridge FF committee and allegiance to Traditional song highly appreciated, hopefully a successful year in all respects Alan White Wareham Wail organiser emigrated fom Barnsley early 70's, remind him of Dave and Betty Martin, Jim Potter, Elliots and Burland if you get the chance! |
