Quite so, MMario. The September Shanty/Forebitter Session will commence at 3:30 PM, 13 Sept. at the Press room, 77 Daniel St., Portsmouth NH.

I assume that you'll be entering NH via Rt. 95 Take the exit for the Portsmouth Traffic Circle. Once there proceed North on Rt. 1 By-Pass. Take the second exit (Maplewood Ave.) Turn right on to Maplewood. At the first set of lights turn left. At the stop sign, turn right (Market Street) After the next stop sign turn left (Bow St.) This curves around to a stop sign on Daniel St. Turn right and park at the first available spot. You may have to circle the block a few times; just keep taking rights. If you despair of this, keep following Daniel St into the square and look for signs for the Parking Garage on your right (1st set of lights in the square)

Looking forward to seeing you there, and if possible, at the Friday evening session too -- Tom

Sad to say Roll & Go members will be missing this one, and kidnapping Kendall Morse as well, for a benefit concert at the Chocolate Church in Bath.

Have fun, gang!

And you're free to steal any of my songs!

Charley Noble

Charley, it's all well and good for you lot to go off to raise funds for a good cause, but must you shanghai Kendall as well? Some of us haven't seen the good man since April.

Grumph -- Tom

I'm busy trying to learn a new song, and I haven't learn a new song in AGES. Heck, I might even be able to learn a couple by then!

Charles and Kendall, I really hope y'all can show up for the Portsmouth Maritime Festival!

Yes, I'm looking foward to joining the open session at the Press Room prior to attending the Portsmouth Maritime Festival concert upstairs.

I've always wondered what went on upstairs, besides feedback.

Sorry for being out of touch. My home computer is down. I hope to be at the September session although I don't get out of work until 2:00 p.m..

I am hoping to start a similar event to the Press Room session in Portland at the Irish Heritage Center. I would like to have it on opposite Saturdays from the Press Room session. Does anyone have any opinions on which Saturday would work the best?

Brían

Brian -- Due to conflicts with Indian Neck and Mystic, I'm planning to shift the Press Room Session to the Third Saturday starting in January 2004. It was thought that it would be too easy to forget the first Saturday. And the fourth Saturday would be a conflict in Portsmouth with the monthly Coffee House at the South Church.

Hope to see you, and others, Saturday week -- Tom

Great news indeed, Brett!

For the time being , though, it would be nice to start getting an idea of who will be coming to sing and join our special guest, M Mario.

I know that Roll and Go is going to jump ship (for a good cause) and shanghai Kendall. Brian is coming after work? Sinsull, Barry, others?

A week from tomorrow -- Tom

figuring timing - how long should it take me from (roughly) Plymouth Mass....

05 Sep 03 - 01:05 PM (#1013438)
Subject: RE: Sept. Shanty Session at the Press Room
From: curmudgeon

From Plymouth, about 1.5 - 2 hours I'd guess, depending on traffic. When you leave, the heavy flow should be headed in your direction toward the Cape. Once you get around Boston, it will start moving North to NH and Maine. Maybe someone who has made the trip can advise us better -- Tom

that's close enough - just have to leave a wee bit earlier friday morning than I thought - cause I gotta get set in Plymouth before I drive up.

Figure 2 hrs anyway if traffic isn't bad but on a Fri the earlier you get started the better. Heading into Boston from the south if during rush hr can slow you down a bit. On the north side of Boston you'll hit more traffic, the later the thicker. If you pass through Boston by 2pm you should make it in 2 hrs. Hope to see you there. Barry

We usually try to get there and have the tables and chairs arranged by 4:00. The music is apt to start at anytime after, usually once we have enough for a "quorum," but almost always by 4:30. I hope that's specific enough -- Tom

Sorry Tom, I'm not sure how I got talked into doing the Chocolate Church thing. It also conflicts with an annual party I go to. Anyway, I don't know if I will be able to sing. The voice is no better than it was a year ago, so I may have to stick to the humor.

I wont be able to make it to the festival, it conflicts with another commitment. Maybe some day they will ask me to perform there, after all, I am one of those rare performers who has actually been to sea. If you think you sense a BIT of irritation, you are right.

MMario arrived and departed Friday, then arrived and departed on Saturday. We had a smallish group for the shanty sing, but there were enough fine singers to reach critical mass and I believe a good time was had by all.

Quite right, Jeri; small in numbers, but grand on enthusiasm. It was especially rewarding to have MMario there for both the Friday night and the shanty sessions with his fine voice adding new songs to the mix. But then, it's always great to have visiting Mudcatters joining us.

Speaking of which, we'll be joined by Susan A R and Turtle next Friday evening at the Press Room. All Catters in the vicinity are urged to attend -- Tom

Hey, it wasn't THAT small a group! The harmonies were incredible.

Let's see, Barbara Benn was there for the earlier part (she had an event at Strawbery Banke Museum to cover), Brian Marston, Barry Finn, Brian Hoye, Dave Halliwell, Jeri, and MMario who got the prize for coming the furthest for the session. Tom and me, of course. Then Kevin Scanlon, Alan Eaton and Ramona Connelly showed up after Barbara had to leave. Am I forgetting anyone?

Roll and Go and Kendall had a gig (capitalism rears its ugly head ;-) ), Mark and Barbara are marrying off one of the kids, Bruce MacIntyre is recovering from surgery, and I think gigs were responsible for a few more absences. I won't know for sure until they submit notes from their mothers.

The harmonies were AWESOME! (Not a word I often use in the colloquial sense -- and I DO mean "inspiring awe".) Some wonderful material new to the session, too. And the listeners were exceptionally pleased that they finally came to one of the Saturday sessions instead of just the Friday sessions -- they could actually HEAR all the words, harmonies, and the discussions that followed about the songs' sources, histories, etc.

Other than the fact that my tape recorder had the "pause" button inadvertently on for the first go-round (so I haven't a clue as to how I sounded on "Sloop John A", Charley), I think it was a great session!

Thanks, everybody, for making it so!

The session certainly was not lacking inspite of the absences of the Roll & Goers and Naemanson who stands in a class all by himself. I was impressed with the chorus on ORO SE DO BHEATHA 'BHAILE. I took attendence however, and notice Uncle Jaque was absent again. Talk about Plate 'o Shrimp. Two guys named Brian, both in red t-shirts, both play the whistle....

Linn-

Capitalism? Really, Roll & Go and Kendall Morse were doing a benefit concert for the Chocolate Church. We wouldn't miss one of your shanty swaps for mere money. Well, maybe if it were a lot of money...We did have a nice crowd at the Church.

See you at the Festival gathering at the Press Room in a couple of weeks.

Awe inspiring is the word for these sessions. (Quaking in the boots and wanting to hide under the table are a few other phrases that pass through my mind - *my* intial reactions)

Well worth the driving up from Plymouth both days - especially Saturday with the lesser traffic and NOT getting lost on the way home.

My loyal fans and friends at King richard's faire tried to tell me it wasn't worth my missing faire - but they are just greedy...

yes - the Cartaghena song I did (written by Peter Benson) is about the Sack of Cartaghena (central America - Columbia I think it is located) - The English sacked Cartaghena at least twice - once in 1586 or '87; once later on.
