Here in Iowa (not Idaho, not Ohio, just south of Minnesota <g>) the PBS affiliates are hawking Martin Scorsese's “Seven-night blues television festival”, The Blues, starting September 28.

I'm refreshing this thread because I just saw the 1-hour documentary Why the Cowboy Sings on my local PBS station in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.

Featured musicians were Larry Schutte, Glenn Ohrlin, Henry Real Bird, and Stephanie Davis.

Watch for it if it comes around again.

The website contains the complete text of the narrative and dialogue, as well as video clips and still photos.

The performers were all interviewed at home on their ranches as well as shown performing. They are all working ranchers as well as folksingers.
