BS: CIA wants my DNA

Apparently the US government is strong-arming European governments into making their citizens give DNA samples, which will be coded into their passports. And the US wants to keep these records.

But there's no reciprocal deal, where US citizens' DNA would be held by European governments.

Did I hear someone say American Empire?

But won't the same kind of thinking require that all people getting into America will have to have the same kind of DNA proof of identity, including Americans who have been abroad to exotic places lkke Canada?

Otherwise all the bad guys have to do is to knock over a few American tourists and use their passport.

That's only a small part of it, Mario. There is a secret conspiracy of silence about the shortage of decent DNA among the Upper Circles of Government. With the world's DNA stored in a Secret DNA Storage Facility, the Upper Circles can pick and choose from the best DNA in the whole world. By using certain laboratory techniques (currenly proscribed and classified) the Upper Circles will be able to enrich their personal DNA as well as cloning those who will follow them. This will permit the Upper Circles to continue in power AND to grow, every day, better and better in every way. This is called "Project Moloch," for some reason that Dammit George can explain better than I.

Aw, you non-Americans! I swear! You just don't get it, do you? It's the job of the U.S. to make the rules. It's your job to play by them. We don't have to play by 'em 'cause we made 'em!

It's the way it's been for years. And if you don't believe me, just ask the descendants of the people that were here when our ancestors arrived. We made the rules. They agreed to play by the rules. But we never agreed to play by the rules! So, we killed most of 'em, imprisoned the rest, and took their land away.

I'd be more than happy to piss on the CIA. Whether they collect it or not is up to them.

People, you should take a look at the article Mmario posted. This is definitely journalism at its most...well, just look:

There are dozens of species of large squid in the world's oceans, but the giant squid is by far the largest.

and, farther along...

Even if the scientists had wanted to, they could not have made a feast of the mysterious squid. Mr Pemberton said its high ammonia content would have made it unpleasant to eat, tasting a bit like floor cleaner.

And there it ends. What a style!

Seems like the BBC may have enticed some of George Bush's former speechwriters into crossing the pond...

Aloha,
Mark

We apologize for this interruption. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

I rather liked that last paragraph about how bad the squid would have tasted. I got the impression of some goggle-eyed young reporter earnestly writing it down.

Unless they are going to be able to do crosschecks at customs to check whether the DNA on the passport is the same as that of the actual travellers (and that just isn't practical), I can't see how this kind of thing is going to have any useful effect whatsoever. But then achieving a useful effect, as opposed to a political impact, isn't what all this kind of thing is about.

The DNA story is complete rubbish. McGrath has correctly pointed out that a quick comparison at the border cannot be done (for some time at least).

However, what the USA wants is those countries whose citizens do not need visa to enter the USA (EU countries, for instance) to include biometric data into their passport information. That could be facial data, fingerprints, iris data. These could (and would) easily be saved for later quick comparison each time someone with such a passport enters the USA. There are no plans whatsoever that the EU countries give all these data to the USA. The sampling is done only if someone enters the USA.

I think it is better to discuss the real plans than gross exaggerations.

By the way, all European passports at this time already contain biometric data like body length, colour of eyes and age. The disadvantage is that tens of thousands Europeans have the same combination of eye colour and body length and age. So, the idea is not to start including biometric data, the real idea is to start including biometric data that can be expected to identify one particular person for there would be most certainly noone else with the same pattern.

These are the plans worth discussing.

Wolfgang

That's right. They want biometric information: perhaps DNA records, perhaps fingerprints, perhaps retinal scans - on all passports, whether or not these Europeans *intend* to go to the US.

So since I have a passport for my regular trips to France, Britain, etc, the US government wishes to hold my DNA, fingerprints, retinal scan, or whatever.

But an American citizen who gets a passport? Does my government have the right to have his DNA, fingerprints, retinal scan, etc? Nope.

Here's a piece in The Sunday Business Post about the plan.

Here's an interesting debate on Slashdot about it.

This early article on the agreement in the earnest newspaper The Irish Times refers to "visitors to the US", but in fact it's not just visitors, it's every Irish citizen with a passport. Which is a much larger proportion than in America, since you need a passport to travel around Europe.

But if you think this is fine, and my freedom is less important to you than your own, well, ok, that's up to you.

Sorry, only just saw this.

I don't object to pictures in passports.

What I do object to is the US holding information on the citizens of another jurisdiction - whether or not those foreign citizens intend to enter the US at any time.

I would strongly oppose the inclusion of DNA data on a microchip, I also strongly would oppose the EU giving information about all their citizens to any other government. However, I see nothing in the links that one of these two possibilities is considered seriously.

All passports I know do already contain biometric information. Instant scanning of this information can already be done and is done at many borders. The problem to discuss in my eyes is do we oppose that passports contain information that makes their use by someone else impossible as compared to difficult as it now is.

I seem to remember a furphy about the great DNA acquisition project many years ago - something about every child born having a spot of blood taken on a paper slip, and how these were all in storage... :-)

Love the song - need more verses... :-)
