05 Sep 03 - 12:09 AM (#1013115) Subject: BS: Freeman Tilden Award From: Peter Kasin I just want to share my joy with the Mudcat comunity over receiving a high award for a park service interpretive ranger, the Freeman Tilden Award, for the Western region. There are 10 regions in the National Park Service, and one ranger from each region is chosen. in November, a national awardee is chosen from the ten regional winners. The award is named in honor of the godfather of nature and historic interpretation, Freeman Tilden, who set down some compelling guiding principles of interpretation in his book "Interpreting Our Heritage." By "interpretation,'" I mean the field of interpreting the meaning and significance of natural, historical, and cultural resources to park and museum visitors. Why I want to share this with you all, is that this award was given to me based on my work organizing a sea music festival at the park I work at in San Francisco. This award is not just a personal accomplishment, but a statement and affirmation, I think, of the park service recognizing the importance of preserving and presenting our traditional sea music heritage. My many thanks to the musicians who made this festival possible! Chanteyranger |

You have been doing a right wonderfull job even if you are out on the left coast. It's not all that often that someone gets the recognition for some thing well done. You deserve every bit of of it. 05 Sep 03 - 01:00 PM (#1013433) Subject: RE: BS: Freeman Tilden Award From: Stilly River Sage Congratulations! I have a couple of dog-earred copies of Interpreting our Heritage that I've used many times over the years. Tilden reminds us of so many things that are just as important today when interpreting subjects for the public as they were when his classic book was written several decades ago. SRS |
05 Sep 03 - 07:34 PM (#1013629) Subject: RE: BS: Freeman Tilden Award From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Thanks, all. Yes, Stilly, his principles are for the ages! Barry, that's right, on second thought it is a legit music thread. Any clone out there to the rescue? |
08 Sep 03 - 03:12 PM (#1014910) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Dave Swan CR's Sea Music Festival is a high class operation, even if he does hire some low brow talent. From the perspective of someone who has been lucky enough to appear there, the festival is a masterpiece of organization, entertainment, education and preservation of tradition. You need only witness the number of volunteers knocking themselves out because they couldn't bear to let the Chanteyranger down to know where the heart and soul of this event lie. It's not just the special events where Chanteyranger makes his park shine, you can see it in the monthly chantey sings and the weekly events he runs at the pier. Congrats CR! D |
08 Sep 03 - 07:37 PM (#1015058) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: radriano Does this mean we have to start calling him "Mr. Chanteyranger"? All kidding aside, Congratulations! |
08 Sep 03 - 09:22 PM (#1015117) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Barry Finn Hey Dave, does that mean you're calling me "low brow talent"? Well, I couldn't be in finer company. Thanks Barry |
08 Sep 03 - 10:23 PM (#1015143) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Melani What it means is that he is now officially one of the ten coolest park rangers in the United States! Of course, we already knew that, but it is nice to have official confirmation of a well-known fact. |
08 Sep 03 - 10:30 PM (#1015147) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Dave Swan Not at all, my dear Mr. Finn. Your talent is of the highest brow. I referred only to my little band of beer swilling idiots, whose only high brow attributes are associated with our hairlines. Respectfully, Y'r humble obd't, D Swan |
08 Sep 03 - 11:23 PM (#1015169) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Barry Finn Jeezz, now are you picking on my hairline? Hey Dave, what's a brow anyway? My kids sometimes call me uni-brow because my eyebrows run from eye to eye without a break. Nice to hear from ya, say hi from me to PJ & I hope all's well with your family. We knew he was the coolest, now ship him east. Barry |
09 Sep 03 - 12:04 AM (#1015191) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Peter Kasin Thanks, folks! Dave, I have to agree with you that there's nothing like a good Lowenbrau while watching some talent. I should, though, get slapped for a misprint (or a mis-brain) on the number of regions in the park service. There are actually seven since the park service re-did the whole configuration some years ago. I was thinking more of the regions in the Ntl. Assoc. for Interpretation (I'm in region 9). Bottom line here, 7 regions, one brain dead ranger....but too late, they can't take it back. |
09 Sep 03 - 02:05 AM (#1015224) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Anglo Well, let me add my congratulations, as someone of lo, Neanderthal brow, but who has yet shared the stage of said event with Mr Swan and his fellow swillers. Chanteyranger, you put on a really fine, well organized event, despite the best efforts of some your performers, and it is wonderful to see you honored for this. I hope this means there'll be lots more festivals! |

09 Sep 03 - 08:24 PM (#1015894) Subject: RE: Freeman Tilden Award (for sea music festival) From: Margaret V Congratulations, Chanteyranger, that's a lovely honor, and sounds very well deserved indeed! (Becky, there are six--the other three are that interpretation is an art; that interpretation for children should be distinct from, not a watered-down version of, interpretation for adults; and that interpretation should be whole, not just a part, and should teach to the whole person. Good man, Tilden...) Cheers, Margaret |
