Shanty Lovers, Help! Exercise Songs?

My newly-developing "career" seems to involve aquatic therapy. The music for workout tapes is awful! So I am changing that and making my own tapes, as I develop new workouts for special populations. (Country blues and water-based Tai Chi was a riot, thank you Kelly Joe Phelps; Dockery Dawgs is next. Also due soon are doo-wop gospel items.)

It occurred to me that singing the cues would be a great idea.... for example I enjoyed about a half-hour yesterday working out while singing silly verses for "Cape Cod Girls" (thanks Mmario!!!). And if you can sing or talk while exercising vigorously, your heart rate is right where it belongs.

How about some help writing new verses involving body parts and movements, Catters? (Oy!) Remember, it's a WHOLE body workout. :~)

Hi Susan. Excellent suggestions.

A number of songwriters here in HAlifax do write shanties. I'll pass this suggestion on to them and see what they come up with.

Great!

Cape Cood girls have good strong backs,
Heave away, haul away........
CHOP that water like you swing an axe,
And we're bound for South Australia.

Well, there's always The Bowling Shanty, since some people do consider bowling to be a form of exercise.

Aloha,

Susan-

You could always adapt my parody of "Wake Up Little Suzie" entitled "Wake Up Susianna":Thread Transport

The part where the chorus goes "UMPH!" would be nice with some high kicks!

These are great ideas, but I am specifically looking for new verses people might contribute that would fit the shanty pattern and for which I could use basic shanty tunes, and where each verse would cue a specific exercise.

Susan-

It would be helpful if you would post some of the swimming exercise jargon. I'm clueless with regard to what you folks typically do in the pool.

Thanks--

Think of basic calisthenics-- lift, stretch, kick, bend, etc., for body extremities. See verse above for an example....

We're doing these and walking and jogging in the water, not exactly swimming. It's the same kind of workout you would do on land, but done in water to reduce gravity and impact, while increasing resistance.

"Ya steatch yer arm and pull the Fridge Door,
Blow boys Blow,
Then ya lift that Fosters Lager,
Blow Me Bully Boys Blow

Now work with yer ring-pull-finger
Blow Boys Blow,
Throw Back yer head and get it in yer
Blow me bully boys blow

(well, that's me nackered, think I'll take a rest)

When I was a young gal in me prime,
Way, hey, oh!
I'd kick me legs two at a time,
Round the pool in Mexico.

I'd kick them high, I'd kick them low...
I'd bust the blocks before I'd go...

Now I'm old and weatherbeat..
It's all I can do to stand on me feet...

Well, maybe that's a start!

Susan-

Actually if you're doing something close to a traditional refrain for "Round the Bay of Mexico" it would run like this:

When I was a young man in me prime,
Way, up, Susiana!
I'd court them yella gals two at a time,
Round the Bay of Mexico.

But have fun!
