Origins: Who's in the Bathroom Hanging on the Wall

My (Canadian) mother (born in the '40's) used to sing this song to me when it was time to brush my teeth. I've never met anyone else who's heard of it.

Who's in the bathroom
Hanging on the wall
Who's in the bathroom
Long, lean and tall?

Who's in the bathroom
Who do you think?
Why, it's your friend
With the bristles on the end
Johnny To-o-o-oth
Brush 'em up, brush 'em up,
Brush 'em up, brush 'em up

I believe she may have invented it, as mothers often will!

I think that she told me she got them off a children's radio program, but I don't remember the name of the program.

That would make sense -- a sort of 1940's forerunner of Sesame Street -- I'm sorry but I don't know the song.

Reminds me of

Pink Toothbrush, Blue Toothbrush... that WAS a big hit...

And I am remined of certain "toothbrush jokes",
but I will be good...
~~~~~~~~
Who's in the bathroom hanging on the wall,
All nice and white, in a roll so small...
Later than the 40's, but Captain Kangaroo used to play a recording of this song on his TV show while a puppet toothbrush danced around.
The song was called Tommy Toothbrush. We had it on 45 back in the early fifties. I have tried to remember the words for my children and now my grandchildren. All I can remember is that the label was yellow. I remember it starting as "Who's in the bathroom hanging on the wall?' Why it's you friend with the bristles on the. Who-----? Tommy Tooth-- brush 'um up brush 'um up...... This was in about 1957 or '58. In the U.S. we lived in Illinois.
Thank you Sharon. That was nice of you to post your information for me. Your mother and I are probably about the same age. Our mothers must have found the song for us way back when. I am surprised that only two of us have heard of it.Now my grandkids will be singing it!
Thanks again, Ed
I remember it as:
"Tommy Toothbrush"
Who's in the bathroom,
Hanging on the wall,
Waiting at attention
'Till you come to call?
Who's in the bathroom,
Long, thin, and tall?
Why, it's your friend
With the bristles on the end:
Who? Tommy Tooth--
Brush 'em up, brush 'em up,
Brush 'em up, brush 'em up.
Who waits for just you
By the bathroom sink,
Maybe dressed in blue,
Or yellow, white, or pink?
Who waits for just you,
Who do you think?
Why, it's your friend
With the bristles on the end:
Who? Tommy Tooth--
Brush 'em up, brush 'em up,
Brush 'em up, brush 'em up.
(I'm 63, grew up in central WI. We sang this in grade school. Would appreciate knowing who created it, etc.)
I was born in 1957 in Vancouver B.C. and when I was very small it used to be my favourite song, so everyone in my family sang it. My older siblings remember that it used to be played on the Ross Mortimer show on a local radio station.
20 or so years ago I mentioned this song to a retired teacher (also in Vancouver) who remembered a film strip that featured the song.
I've never heard the recorded version, nor do I know who sang it, but I've been looking for it for decades. If anyone knows, please post the information.
Richard
My aunt had a record she played for her two boys and myself when I visited, and I remember only the first verse:
Who's in the bathroom, hanging on the wall,
Standing at attention 'til you come to call?
Who's always ready, at your beck and call?
Why it's your friend, with the bristles on the end -
Tommy Toothbrush 'em up, brush 'em up, brush 'em up, brush 'em up...
I sing this a lot, and my husband thinks I'm kind of crazy, but I loved this song!!1
Here's the version my mother remembers from her childhood record by 'the Sing-song Man':
Who's in the bathroom,
morning noon and night,
dressed in his coat of
yellow pink or white?
Who's in the bathroom,
who do you think?
Why, it's your friend,
with the bristles on the end,
Whoooooooo?
Tommy Toothbrush!
(Brush 'em up, brush 'em up,
brush 'em up, brush 'up...)
I'd think it'd be calculated to give kids nightmares, amd put them right off cleaning their teeth...
Hi Sharon! I know this is years after your post. But my dad was a dentist. He had a record album my mom brought home and Tommy Toothbrush was my Favorite! I’d play it over and over and over when I was a little girl. Now I’m over 60.
I have thought of this song for decades now and could never find another who knew it either. Hello Tommy Toothbrush aficionado ??
