Lyr Req: The Teddy Boys' Picnic

Looking for the lyrics to a song which parodied the Teddy Bears' Picnic, back in the 1950s or 1960s. I think it started 'If you go down to the woods today/You'd better go in disguise/With stovepipe trews and fancy shoes/And something intense in ties.' What's the rest of it?

Check out the links above. I don't think we have complete lyrics, but it's a start.

This is a memory from a Boy Scout gang show I was involved in in the early '60s. I think its about right, hope it's the one your after.

If you go down to the park today, you better go in disguise,
If you go down to the park today, you're in for a big surprise,
For every Ted that ever there was, will gather today for certain because.
Today's the day the Teddy Boys have their picnic.

Waistcoats made of gay broccade, our suits are tailor made.
We love a bit of flattery.
See us formed up on parade, prepaired to do assault and battery.
Rozzers chase us when they can, they ran us in for working over one old man.
The Beak was kind of sympathetic and fined us half a crown.
Because were nice little Teddy Boys ( Here comes a copper!! )
Were nice little Teddy Boys.

No mention of beetle-crushers or drainpipe trousers in the lyrics?

And they generally call their waistcoats "drapes" short for drapecoat which isn't cut in at the waist--a boxcoat, I guess. The pockets, usually 3 or 4, are always lined with velvet as are the cuffs and collar. The drape's lining is often done up like the Confederate rebel flag of the American civil war but the Brits don't associate it with the Southern cause since they're workingclass Brits who could give a shit. They wear it because it symbolizes rebellion and rocknroll.

A tie is worn but are often string ties of the type worn in the American west. Sometimes a cowboy-type stetson is worn with it. The hat is optional because most Teds are proud of their quiffs--their greased hair piled high and combed back--and like to show them off.

Teddy comes from King Edward VII who was affectionately called Teddy by the British media. The fashion worn by Teddy Boys was popular in Edward's day (he was Elizabeth I's son and reigned from 1901-1910). So it is aften called Edwardian fashion. It was actually made popular by gay men during in WW2 where it functioned very much like the zoot suits did in America. In fact, the Teddy clothes ARE zoot suits.

The Beatles were Teddys but wore leather. Many Teds actually wear leather and are indistinguishable from greasers. Some Teds wear the Edwardian clothes for hanging out or hitting the clubs but switched to leather for brawling or for also hitting the clubs.

I saw it in a Pick of Punch from the mid- to late 50s:

If you go down to the park today, you'd better go in disguise,
In drainpipe trews and fancy shoes and something intense in ties.
Don't bother to wash -- it's sure to rain;
Remember your cosh and bicycle chain;
Today's the day the Teddy boys have their picnic.

It's amazing what you could learn from contents of the bottom shelf of your Granny's drawing-room bookcase.

Elizabeth I had no children - and died in 1603 - so it would have been extremely difficult for her to have a son reign from 1901-1910

There's also the whole business of Elizabeth first or second depending on whether you're in Scotland or England, of course!

>>In drainpipe trews and fancy shoes and something intense in ties.<<

Drainpipes are called that because that's kind of what they look like.

The fancy shoes are called beetle crushers are generally made of bright-colored suede or something on the top with laces or straps but the soles and heels are always crepe rubber.

>>Don't bother to wash -- it's sure to rain;
Remember your cosh and bicycle chain;
Today's the day the Teddy boys have their picnic.<<

They were called Cosh Boys initially in the early 50s. A cosh is a kind of baton or club. I guess that's where "A Clockwork Orange" took its imagery from. They were quite violent but as the Teddy movement grew, it mellowed a little more. It still exists and they still dress the same and generally will only listen to 50s rocknroll, maybe some Beatles. It would appear that Teds and punks do not get along. A Ted had told me how much he and his mates hated punks and took great delight in pummeling them. It made me think of that one Emerson, Lake & Palmer song, "Bennie the Bouncer," where a big Ted named Bennie squares off against a punker with a blade named Savage Sid and Greg Lake sings it in this raucous cockney accent.

Teddy girls dress in Toreador-style jeans or circle skirts. 50s chicks. I suppose some might even wear poodles on them although that might have been purely American. There's also a middle ground--punkabilly. In fact, these punk-teddy hybrid bands are often excellent--really really cool stuff!! But the English teddy bands today put out some really hard-hitting face-shredding rockabilly. There's even a racist, xenophobic branch of teds.

But from what I saw, Teddyism is distinctly British. I don't think you can really be a ted unless you are British.

There is a film called Zoot Suit Riots which says on its website:

Initially an African American youth fashion, closely connected to jazz culture, the zoot suit was co-opted by a generation of Mexican American kids, who made it their own.

The oversized suit was both an outrageous style and a statement of defiance. Zoot suiters asserted themselves, at a time when fabric was being rationed for the war effort, and in the face of widespread discrimination.

Zoot suits were reserved for special occasions -- a dance or a birthday party. The amount of material and tailoring required made them luxury items. Many kids wore a toned-down version of the "draped" pants or styled their hair in the signature "ducktail.",/i>

Loads on Google...

If you go down in the woods today, you'd better go in disguise,
In drainpipe trousers, fingertip coats, and don't forget your knives,
Don't bother to wash, cos it mighthe da rain,
And don't forget your bicycle chain,
Today's the day the Teddy boys have their picnic.

That's the version I heard, as a 1970s Ted in Oldham, Lancashire, England.

Musket:
more a parody of an advert than of the original.
Sugar Puffs used the tune for one of their tv ads in the 60s(?)

. . . for Jeremy the Sugar Puffs bear
who loves his honey has left some there
to bring his friends, and have a Sugar Puffs picnic. (from memory)

Cheers

Hi Reggie,
Surprised to see such an up to date post here. I havent had a look for a couple of years but if ever I'm looking for something obscure ( on account I'm late 70's so not so many will know what I'm on about) I come here.
And TBP came to mind, partly because I noticed today 7/7/21 (euro ?) my town, Sandbach, is filling up with some beefy looking Community Enforcement Officers !! so I wanted to check the lyrics of this little old favourite, and circulate to my ukulele chums to stay home and watch it on the telly.
Your version matches mine exactly! Cheers.

I think I learned this at a San Francisco Folk Music Club campout. I believe it was written by a park ranger: anyone remember his name? Is there another verse? I've messed with the words.

The Grateful Dead's Concert

If you go out in the woods today
You're in for a big surprise
If you go out in the woods today
You wouldn't believe your eyes.
For every head that ever there was
Is heading there this morning because
Today's the day the Grateful Dead give their concert.

If you go out in the woods today
You probably won't see deer.
It's not a park, it's a parking lot
With copious cans of beer.
Still we'll do the best that we can
To start a dead VW van
Today's the day the Grateful Dead give their concert.

(CHORUS)
Concert time for the Grateful Dead
The Grateful Dead I said, they're gonna be cranking up today
See the deadheads still in bed
We need the campsites, it's a holiday.
Try to roust them, go ahead,
Try to collect from them, they'll say that they have no dough
But at five o'clock you'll find them at Stanford
Standing in a line
To give their bread to the Grateful Dead.
