Hi folks, can anyone help me out with the chords to this tune? Your bound to look like a monkey when you get old. I have the lyrics and it's probably a simple g,c,d, thing but anyone know them? Thanks in advance, Rustic

This may not be a help, but "You're Bound To Look Like A Monkey When You Get Old" [audio] by Clarence Williams' Novelty Band is HERE.

It's also on a recent CD By Lil' Rev Called "Fountain Of Uke". It's a great CD. He's from Milwaukee and you can find his website through Google Search.

Thanks for the info, I'm still needing the chords though if anyone can help me. I know some folks who do this song but they are far and not near to ask (Front Porch Swinging Liquor Pigs), so I'm sending this to the top!

Grammatical note:
I know that grammar is no longer taught properly, so:

'Your' is possesive, like 'Your song'

'You're' is short for 'You are' - the apostrophe denotes a missing letter.

Also, an apostrophe does NOT denote plurals
I have recently seen, in a supermarket ' For baby's' when they meant 'for babies'

Boy, this one really takes me back. Bob Koester (Delmark Records) used to run blues sessions in a little basement club on North State St. in Chicago c. 1963. He'd have the likes of Big Joe Williams, Yank Rachel, Sleepy John Estes, Hammie Nixon, Sunnyland Slim, Little Brother Montgomery and occasional others. On a good night when they were all feeling good, they'd all get together and do this song. Their version wasn't as polished as Clarence Williams' recording and I never really tried to pick it up but I think it went something like this.

G
I can tell by your knees

          C7                   G
You' been climbin' them coconut trees

                      D7                  G
You' gone look like a monkey when you get old.

             C7                G
When you get old, when you get old

                      D7                  G
You' gone look like a monkey when you get old.
It's only been forty years since I last heard it played so naturally it's still fresh in my mind.

Michael Hurley did a version on his 'Snockgrass' album which has the stanza posted above by Mark.

The one by Clarence Williams and band sounds (to me) more like this from a listen last evening:

Key: G

(G) I can tell by your (C) hair
You got (G) monkey in you some(C)where
And you (G) bound to look like a (D7) monkey when you get (G) old.
When you get (C) old, when you get (G)old (run it from G to E7 over "old")
You (A7) bound to look like a (D7) monkey when you get (G) old.

Thanks Mark and 12-Stringer. That looks good to me and will work.
Pavane, You're bound to look like a grammer school teacher (monkey)when you get old!

I can tell by your hair, you're gonna be swingin' up in the air
I can tell by your feet, bannanas will be all you'll eat
I can tell by your knees, you'll be climbin' up them coconut trees
I can tell by your ears, gorillas'll be your peers
I can tell by your face, you'll be swing all over the place

Is that enough? Scratch you armpit once for yes, twice for no. I'll meet ya on the coconut tree.

I can tell by your bloodshot eyes, you've been drinkin' the old Budweis..
I can tell by your face you belong to the monkey race..
I can tell by your hands, that you got monkey glands...

I think this song will go with about anything you can come up with. It's a fun song. Between each phrase and chorus you can do an instumental. We have a washtub bass, washboard, kazoos, saw and bow, guitar and harp so I think it's going to be fun. It was the D7, C7 E7 I wasn't finding, so once again thanks for the chords.

GUEST, I am not that young now! I'd be thinking of retiring, not teaching.

Milton Brown, the inventor of western swing, did a great version with additional lyrics. The "monkey glands" line probably comes from jug band music, and has been used before. I played Brown's verson for a freind and his kids came out of their rooms is hysterical laughter.

In addition to some of the lines mentioned Hurley also had:

'I can tell by your shape your first cousin must be ape'
'I can tell by your shoes you just love to dance the blues'
'I can tell by your breath, you've been lovin' a monkey to death'

My grandfather used to sing this song to my sister and I. He sang another verse that I have not seen posted. I don't know if he made it up or not, but I just had to add it, lol.

I can tell by your nose you been diggin gopher holes.

This song used to crack me and my sister up, lol.

I miss my grandfather :-).

Curiously, I just heard this little ditty for the very first time last Thursday, sung by Severn and a couple of guys who claimed to be his pals.
