Lyr Req: Father Put the Cow Away

Father Put The Cow Away, by Bud Messner and Molly Darr.

Starts out with the story of the old maid and the burglar, then a chorus about not being able to do the milking for the night.... succeeding verses are other similar stories.

CHORUS:

"Father put the cow away
Get her out of sight.
I am heavy-hearted,
I cannot milk tonight.
It ain't fair to this here cow
For me to try and milk her now.
Father put the cow away--
I cannot milk tonight.
Tra-la-la-la-la, Tra-la-la-la-la,
Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la."

I'll transcribe if no one has them as a paste-in.

Not a very clear understanding on the part of the composer on the need of a cow to be milked regularly. In my experience, if you neglect to milk them at their regular time they'll soon be bellowing outside your window!

Tra-la-la-la-la-la-moo,

No, no no.... the FATHER would have to milk it FOR her! Put it away and MILK it too! Getting pa out of the house, as well.

The sky was dark, the moon was high
All alone - just she and I.
Her hair was soft and eyes were blue
I knew just what she wanted to do.
Her skin so soft, her legs so fine
I ran my fingers down her spine.
I didn't know how, but I tried my best
I started by placing my hands on her breast.
I remember my fear, my fast beating heart
But slowly she spread her legs apart.
And when I did it, I felt no shame
All at once the white stuff came.
At last it's finished, it's all over now
My first time ever at milking a cow.....

Have to start up a new thread to ask. NO idea how you would title the thread! Good luck...

Robin-

A truly fine poem! Does it have a tune, or should we ask if there's a derriere?

Well, Charley, that's all I know about that fragment.

But if you think that's bad, try

Of Course,

I just realised that in Australia

to "Put the Cow Away"

could mean that the poor thing was sick and was not expected to last long so we should put it it of its misery....

DT SONG Old Maid and the Burglar.

This is a different song, though. You can hear it at RECORD LADY, using the artist and song indexes to find and download the file. And please, support the Record Lady site if you can!

FATHER PUT THE COW AWAY
As recorded by Bud Messner and Molly Darr

1. An old maid woke and saw a burglar standin' in her room;
She didn't yell, she didn't scream, and she didn't grab a broom.
She says, "You're welcome to my door, you're such a handsome chap."
Instead of callin' for a cop, she sat right on his lap.

CHO:
"Father put the cow away; get her out of sight.
I am heavy-hearted, I cannot milk tonight.
It ain't fair to this here cow for me to try and milk her now.
Father put the cow away-- I cannot milk tonight.
Tra-la-la-la-la, Tra-la-la-la-la, Tra-la-la-la-la-la-la."

CHORUS

2. A boy and a gal were a-ridin' in the backseat of a car;
She says, "I want attention! Quit smokin' that cigar!"
He dropped the butt; they took a kiss; then what do you suppose?
They hit a bump, the flivver jumped; and she bit off his nose!

CHORUS

Robin-

I'm sure Ben's place has greatly improved its business since the composing of your fine song. The place is probably properly carpeted now and refuses to serve you a beer unless you're wearing a tie, and some underwear...

Subject: Lyr Add: SUSAN'S STORY (Claribel)
From: Jim Dixon

"Father put the cow away" probably started out as a parody of this poem:

From Fireside Thoughts, Ballads, etc., etc. by Claribel [Charlotte Alington Barnard] (London: James Nisbet and Co., 1865), page 67:

SUSAN'S STORY.

Oh mother take the wheel away and put it out of sight,
For I am heavy-hearted, and I cannot spin to-night;
Come nearer, nearer yet, I have a story for your ear,
So come and sit beside me, come and listen, mother dear;
You heard the village bells to-day, his wedding bells they were,
And Mabel is his happy wife, and I am lonely here;
A year ago to-night, I mind, he woo'd me for his bride,
And who so glad at heart as I that happy easter-tide.

But Mabel came among us, and her face was fair to see,
What wonder was it, mother, that he thought no more of me;
When first he said fair words to her, I know she would not hear,
But in the end she listen'd, could she help it, mother dear?
And afterwards we met, and we were friendly all the same,
For ne'er a word I said to them of anger or of blame;
Till both believed I did not care, and may be they were right,
But mother put the wheel away, I cannot spin to-night.
