19th century. Definitely by the Civil War if you see the pictures of the marching hornmen with their backwards saxhorns.

The original trumpets had stops as on a flute but they didn't work well for the trumpet and valves were installed.

Thanks a lot. I guess I was trying to tie this to the thread on Uillean pipes. I feel that the level of technology needed to construct effective valves is comparable with that needed to make said pipes.

Is that about right?
