Lyr Req: Everybody's Lonely (Harry Chapin)

I have that terrible disease for which the Mudcat is the only known cure. A song has popped into my head, I have a few lines and a tune (why do we remember tunes more easily than words?) The feel is this is a male contemporary songwriter in the folk vein from the early 70's. The words I recall are:

All I have is time, nothing else is mine,
All I want is you and one more tomorrow,
Nothing lasts for long, when I ____ it's gone,
So I ________________, and hope to follow.

Please, please, please ease my pain, cure my woes, and find this song for me. I looked in the DT using [All I have is time] since that feels real solid and exclusive for a search.

OK, I've got it. You guys (and gals) want me to suffer. You're probably enjoying it. You are secretly e-mailing each other and asking, "How long can he last?" Not even a nibble on this thread; no sympathy, no guesses. And me, I still agitated and disturbed me.

You all know how it is. Here's a piece of a verse. Then a part of me that thinks there is a chorus. But you'd think I'd remember a chorus (which is, of course, repetitive) if I remember part of a verse. Don't let me down Mudcatters!!!

Still trying to find this song. It will not go away. It may have this chorus:

I know I've spent a lifetime trying(?)
But I've got it all figured out.
Everybody's lonely,
Everybody's lonely,
Everybody's lonely,
That's what it's all about.

My greatest fear is that this is the chorus to yet another song. Help, help, help!!!!

The singer is male, a tenor (I suspect), and a songwriter.

It's OK now, Roger. A title or fulltext search of The International Lyrics Server will find you the song, called "Everybody's Lonely" from Harry Chapin's "Heads and Tails" (tales?) album.
But since I can sense you're desperate, click here for a direct link to the song.
Now, Roger, it's important for you to bookmark the The International Lyrics Server (click here) in case you need another pop song fix. We're folkies here, you know, and we're sometimes not as quick as we should be on pop.

Joe O.,

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The musical world in my head is poorly categorized, so I had not suspected I was looking for a pop song. Today, I heard someone on talk radio refer to Eric Clapton's song, "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out."

Of course, it was written by Jimmy Cox and made famous decades ago by Josh White. So classification and authorship and credit gets mishmashed in real life. It is even worse in my mind.

Perhaps one day, I will grow up and look beyond the Mudcat when I am stumped, realizing that not every song I like is a folk song. Thanks again. My pain is eased.
