With the online version of the Digital Tradition, use the dropdown QuickLinks menu you'll find on most Mudcat pages, and go to the DT Keyword Search at the bottom of the list. Check "drink," and you'll find 343 songs. One of my favorites is the Wisconsin National Anthem, In Heaven There Is No Beer.

There was one to the tune of Amazing Grace, which went
More Ale, more ale
more ale, more ale,
more ale, more ale, more ale!
etc.

A useful filler whilst waiting to be served!
Quack!

try this if you can handle the Sound of Music...
Dough - the stuff I use to buy beer,
Ray - a man who buys me beer,
Me - a bloke I buy beer for,
Far - a long way to the beer,
So - let's have another beer,
La -la la la la la BEER,
Tea - I'd rather have a beer,
Which will bring us back to.....

Boatman,

It's been a long time since I last encountered this nice song. It's a perfect song to sing when you can't sing anything more complicated (that is, after a lot of beers). The version I know goes like this:

Dough - the stuff that buys me beer,
Ray - the man who serves my beer,
Me - the bloke who drinks the beer,
Far - the distance from my beer,
So - I think I'll have a beer,
La -la la la la la BEER,
Tea - I'd rather have a beer,
Which will bring us back to.....

Subject: Lyr Add: IN KIRKINTILLOCH THERE'S NAE PUBS
From: Reiver 2

Off the top of my head (and limited to Irish/Scottish songs0 two of my favorites are "Three Drunken Maidens" which can be found in the DigiTrad as "Drunken Maidens" (the lyrics are nearly the same as I have, only minor differences), and "In Kirkintilloch There's Nae Pubs." I don't find it in the digitrad. I was told this story: The town of Kirkintilloch, a few miles NNE of Glasgow, was well known (and unique for a Scottish community) in being "dry" and thus with no pubs. Somebody, I don't know who -- maybe Wolfgang or someone can help out with information about the song and the town -- wrote a chorus to another song by way of explaning this anomaly (a Scottish town with no pubs.) The verses have no real bearing on the information passed along in the chorus.

IN KIRKINTILLOCH THERE'S NAE PUBS

CHO: In Kirkintilloch there's nae pubs
And I'm sure you'll wonder why.
My brither and me, we went on a spree
And we drank the pubs all dry, all dry,
We drank the pubs all dry.

1. Me grandfa, he worked doon the pits
And so did me faether, too.
You work like a mule, but you leave the school
And you drink on a Saturday, me lads,
   You drink on a Saturday.

2. The gaffer doon the pits, me lads,
   Could scarce believe his e'en.
Me brither and me, we heist mair coal
Than his latest cuttin' machine, me lads,
   Than his latest cuttin' machine.

3. Me faether, he was a Glesca man,
   Me mither cam frae Troon.
They baith did say, the other day,
"It's time ye settled doon, me lads,
   It's time ye settled doon."

Sing the chorus twice at the beginning, then once between each verse and as many times as you feel like at the end. Nice tune!

Hope someone can help me out with information about this song. I can't even remember the singers or the record we learned it from.

"Nancy Whiskey"
"All for me Grog" (Some versions better than others)
"'ARD TACK" -- sometimes called "Hard Tack"(Australian song about a shearing job in a winery)
"LAZY HARRY'S"
All easily found I think.

Is "Lazy Harry's" the same as "The Road To Gundagai" ? In the latter the first line of the chorus is: "And we camped at Lazy Harry's on the road to Gundagai."

One of my favorite Aussie songs.

OK, I learned Kirkintilloch from a Corries recording called "'Live' Alive O". I only have a cassette tape copy, however, so no information about it. The story, such as it is, behind the song I think I heard from a Peebles man.

Used to sing these around the fire at beach parties...

One Scotch, One bourbon, One Beer....

and

Wines Spodie Odie
(You get a nickle, I'll get a dime
We'll go down and buy sweet wine
Buy it by the fifth, buy it by the quart
Buyin' blackberry then you're playin' things smart,
Drinking wines spodie odie drinkin' wine...
Wines spodie odie drinkin' wine
Wines spodie odie drinkin' wine...
Oh baby, pass that bottle to me

and that one that ends up

Glorious, glorious
One keg of beer for the 4 of us
And glory be to god that there are no more of us
For one of us could drink it all alone (damn near...
Hear's to the Irish, dead drunk...the lucky stiiiifffsssss...)

Now those were some great beach parties!

Uncle Dave O - funny you should mention Tom T Hall and "I Like Beer" During the 1986 Peterborough COuntry Music Festival, a TV crew from "Wrap Around Nashville" programme got in contact with a friend of mine and asked if he could provide some "good ol' British folk singers" to go down to the Bell Hotel at Stilton. Four of us turned up and this guy said "Hi I'm Walt Adams, the producer of Wrap Around Nashville and you're going to perform with Tom T.Hall, the storyteller." We glanced blankly at each other and then at him and he sensed our lack of recognition of this legend of country music (well it wasn't as if he came to the local singaround on a regular basis) "What? - you've never heard of Tom T.Hall, the storyteller??" Anyway in walks Tom T.Hall, the storyteller and he goes on to talk about how quaint it was to be in a "good ol' english beer joint" (The Bell - one of the oldest pubs in the area - a "beer joint"??!! - I ask you). He then went on to sing "I Like Beer" with the four of us providing instant harmony which impressed him no end - so much so that he invited us all to appear at the Grand Ol' Oprey next time we were in Nashville. I've yet to take him up on the offer. He was a good bloke though. The programme went out on US TV a couple of weeks later and they sent us a copy of it to have a look at. So that's my claim to fame as far as country music goes.

What's the song that goes:
Boozing Boozing just you and I
Boozing Boozing when we are dry
Some does it open and some on the sly
But we all love bloody well boozing

Mark

A friend guitarist/entertainer, Jerome Gordon Bedker, used to sing this one and did a fine job. I'm not certain of the arrangment transcribed here, (I just did a search online and found this), but I can still hear Jerome's version echoing in my memory as I write this.

Jerome died this past year from liver problems due to his abuse of alcohol.

Chords for "Alcohol"
ALCOHOL

Written by: Raymond Douglas Davies
Published by: Davray Music Ltd.

Transcribed by Ian Grant <101642,232@compuserve.com)

Note: Don't let the 9th and 11th chords put you off. They simply describe the lagging, lazy melody. The melodic pattern descends beautifully as one does into a stupor.

Melody:  E  A  E  G  F F
Words:   Oh demon alcohol..
Chords:  Am      Dm11 Dm

The melody G on 'Alc' is the dominant 7th of Am but the 11th of the next chord,
Dm.

I transcribed it on a piano, where the bass notes alternate sometimes from the 5th to the 1st, at other times from the 1st-5th. I briefly checked it on a guitar, which I can't play but it sounded fine. However, I am not sure about a couple of parts:

Does it really modulate to A major for a few bars?
Is the Am on 'the floozy made...' right?
If anyone has a different view of the chorus changes, I'd like to hear them.

Enjoy that Mediterranean/ Kurt Weillian thang!!

Yours, Ian

Manchester, England.

Mudlark, that one about "Glorious" :

Drunk last night,
Drunk the night before;
Gonna get drunk tonight
Like I never got drunk before;
For when I'm drunk, I'm as happy as can be
For I am member of the Souse family.

Now the Souse family is the best family
That ever came over from old Germany.
There's the Highland Dutch, and the Lowland Dutch,
The Rotterdam Dutch, and other damn Dutch.

Sing glorious, victorious,
One keg of beer for the four of us.
Sing glory be to God that there are no more of us,
For one of us could drink it all alone. Damn near.
Drink, drink, drink, drink,
Drank, drank, drank, drank,
Drunk, drunk, drunk drunk...(snore)(or belch or barf)

Blessings,
Barbara

I don't remember that one, but it could be there.
Oh, another drinking song is the Quartermaster's Corps.

Oh, it's beer, beer, beer, that makes you feel so queer,
In the corps, in the corps
Oh, it's beer, beer, beer, that makes you feel so queer,
In the Quartermaster's Corps.
My eyes grow dim
I cannot see
I have (hey!) not (ho!)
Brought my specs with me.

And then it's anything you can rhyme that's alcoholic.
Except the rhyme for "Cold Duck" is "sandwich". Capish?

Barbara

Yes Lasy Harry's is the same song that finishes each verse and chorus "And we camped at Lazy Harry's on the road to Gundagai" with some variation as Tramped from... etc. You can follow the blokes' trip with an atlas from the western plains of New South Wales to the road that passes through Gundagai from Melbourne to Sydney. Several place names are mentioned. They never make it to Sydney no matter how often you sing the song.

Forsh,
'Little old wine drinker me'
sounds like the Dean Martin song I mentioned.

On recollection, I think he did that solo, the one I think I am jumbling it with was something he did with Sammy Davis Jnr, I think like "all amigo together, this fine weather" or something.

"Hamish Imlach also did 'I woke up with an aching head, As usual,' Which I do believe is called 'As Usual'"

This is one I'm after too.

Forsh,
I'll put out a call to someone I know who MIGHT have the words to that parody of Moreton Bay, (Chunder in the old pacific sea), mentioned previously in its own thread

Has anyone mentioned The Pig Song? That may not be the right title, but it starts out (singing at a sort of swerving, unsteady gait, with perhaps a hiccup here and there):

It was early last Sep-temburrrr
As near as I re-memburrr
I was walkin' down the street in tip-sy pride...

He collapses in the gutter, and

...A lady passing by was heard...to say
"You can tell a man who boozes
By the company he chooses!"   (pause and a sob)
And the pig got up and slowly walked away!
