Meself and the architect's daughter CHORUS: But the sea, oh the sea, it crept up on me And the water was risin' up quite rapidly I sez to the Mot, "Get your hand off me knee." "Can't you see we're surrounded by water." I switched on the ignition and put in gear Could I get it movin', lads hold not a fear Not if I was there for the next bloody year There was sand in the old carburetor CHORUS With water the car soon filled to the brim I sez to the Mot, "Dear, the chances are slim." "So love get them off here, we'll both have to swin." So I let down the window and scampered CHORUS So if ever you down to Dollymount Strand Be sure that the tide's out and everything's grand For a bird in the bush is worth two in the hand Regardless to what you are after CHORUS From:http://www.theballadeers.com/Lyrics_00.htm Note from Joe Offer (27 May 2013): I have received an e-mail from Shay Healy, confirming that he wrote this song. He says "Dollymount Strand," is a parody of "The Sea Around Us," recorded by Paddy Reilly, Words by Shay Healy. Here ya go Declan: I found another "Dollymount Strand" on Spotify, recorded by Seamus Moore, that speaks of buying the Mot a "Quarter-Pounder." Maybe I'll get to transcribing that version some day. You'll find the Paddy Reilly recording on this YouTube video. -Joe- |

Meself and the architect's daughter. CHORUS: But the sea, oh the sea, it crept up on me, And the water was rising up quite rapidly; Says I to the Mot, "Get your hand off me knee." "Can't you see we're surrounded by water." I turned on the ignition and put it in gear; Could I get it moving, lads? Oh, not a fear! Not if I was there for the next bloody year, There was sand in the old carburetor. CHORUS With water the car was soon filled to the brim, I said to the Mot, "Dear, the chances are slim." "So love get them off you, we'll both have to swim." (?) So I let down the window and scarpered. 28 May 13 - 02:56 AM (#3519909) Subject: RE: req/ADD: Dollymount Strand (Shay Healy) From: MartinRyan Dollymount Strand is on Bull Island, a sandbank island on the north side of Dublin Bay now linked to the mainland by a causeway and bridge. Joe - you'll have passed it on your way out to Howth to check out the lighthouse! "mot" is (nowadays) Dublin slang for "girlfriend", essentially. Probably Dutch in origin. Regards |

He's made a great contribution to Irish musical life over many years. Not enjoying the best of health these days but still "up for it", as we say! Regards |

28 May 13 - 04:39 AM (#3519936) Subject: RE: req/ADD: Dollymount Strand (Shay Healy) From: GUEST,Joxer As the name suggests, Dollymount Strand has been used by generations of Dubliners as a "romantic" getaway. Bull Island started life as a sandbank which resulted from the building of the North and South walls at the mouth of the Liffey, to stop the river mouth silting up. The marine engineer who was responsible for the construction of the 2 walls was William Bligh, later captain of the Bounty. |
28 May 13 - 07:01 AM (#3519977) Subject: RE: req/ADD: Dollymount Strand (Shay Healy) From: MartinRyan Bligh did the marine survey and made recommendations which were largely adopted. There's a succinct, local account HERE Regards |
02 Jun 13 - 10:49 PM (#3522087) Subject: Lyr Add: DOLLYMOUNT STRAND (from Seamus Moore) From: Jim Dixon DOLLYMOUNT STRAND As sung by Seamus Moore on "A Tough Yoke" (2011) On Dollymount Strand on a cold winter's night, I stuck on the hand-brake and switched off the light. Sure I turned to the mot and I said, "Are you right?" Myself and the lee-patron's(?) daughter. We'd been to the pub; we had quite a few, Went into the chipper and joined in the queue, 'Cause she said she might fancy a burger or two, So a big quarter-pounder I bought her. Well, after the meal, sure we had to relax. We talked for an hour, then I went to the jacks. Ah, but when I got back, we got down to brass tacks. Sure that was the reason I brought her. CHORUS: But the sea, oh, the sea had crept up on me, And the tide it was risin' up quite rapidly, And I said to the mot, "Get your hand off my knee. Can't you see we're surrounded by water?" Well, the car it was swimmin' right up to the switch, And myself and the mot were drowned every stitch, But you can't have a game on a water-logged pitch, And the night ended up in disaster. CHORUS: But the sea.... It was six in the mornin' when I got her home. She was highly dice-gusted the game was postponed, And the next day her mother rang me on the phone, Sayin', "That's the last night with my daughter." CHORUS: But the sea.... So whenever you court on Dollymount Strand, Don't park near the water; stay up on the land, 'Cause a bird on the bank is worth two on the sand, Regardless whatever you're after. Keep away from the sea; take a warnin' from me, 'Cause everything rises up quite rapidly. You said to the mot, "Get your hand off my knee. Can't you see we're surrounded by water?" CHORUS: But the sea.... [Verse 1 line 4: "lee-patron" in my attempt at a phonetic spelling. I figure it must be wrong, but I have no idea what the real word or phrase is. Help? (He is definitely not singing "architect's daughter.")] |
03 Jun 13 - 07:34 PM (#3522422) Subject: RE: Lyr Req/ADD: Dollymount Strand (Shay Healy) From: MartinRyan "lee-patron's daughter"? The song is often sung in an exaggerated Dublin accent - but I can't for the life of me imagine what his one might be. I'll check it out. Regards |

Words by Dominic Behan. 1. They say that the lakes of Killarney are fair That no stream like the Liffey can ever com-pare, If it's water you want you'll find want you'll find nothing more rare Than the stuff they make down by the ocean Chorus Oh the sea, oh the sea, is the gradh geal mo croide,* Long may it stay between England and me, It's a sure guarantee that some hour we'll be free Oh' thank God we're surrounded by water 2. Tom Moore made his waters meet fame and renown, A great lover of anything dressed in a crown; In brandy the bandy old Saxon he'd drown, But throw ne'er a one into the ocean. Chorus: 3. The Scots have their whisky, the Welsh have their speech, And their poets are paid about tenpence a week Provided no hard words on England they speak; Oh Lord1. What a price for devotion'. Chorus: 4. The Danes came to Ireland with nothing to do But dream of the plundered old Irish they slew; "Yeh will in your Vikings, "said Brian Boru, And threw them back in the ocean. Chorus: 5. Two foreign old monarchs in battle did join, Each wanting their head on the back of a coin: If the Irish had sense they'd both drown in the Boyne And Partition throw into the ocean'. Chorus: *Gradh geal mo croide great joy of my heart. Pronounced - Grah gall much Cree. |
