Origins: And Holy Is His Name

From: okthen

I accidentally caught the end of a hymn on television this morning and thought I new the tune, I don't know the proper title but the tune was "Wild Mountain Thyme" and where the words "will ye go lassie go" I heard "and holy is his name" I tried a search but came up with nothing (but that doesn't mean it hasn't been discussed here before).
What I want to know is have there been previous threads on this subject and which was borrowed (the folk tune for the hymn,or vice versa?)
cheers
bill

Hi, Bill - I think it's "Holy Is His Name," a 1980's setting of the Magnificat by Bob Haas (GIA is his publisher, I think). I think I've heard it, but I can't find it just now. Haas is one of the Big Three Catholic hymn writers just now, along with Hurd and Haugen.
He does some good stuff, but it's usually Hurd who does lovely things with traditional folk tunes.

Hi, Bill - it's Holy Is Your Name by Bob Haas, "My soul is filled with joy as I sing to God my savior" - a setting of the Canticle of Mary (Magnificat Luke Chapter 1, Verses 46-55 (click)). It's in the Sprit and Song hymnal from OCP (Oregon Catholic Press). I don't have that hymnal, but you can get better information from OCP, 1-800-LITURGY (548-8749).
Hope that does the trick for you.

Thanks Joe, most informative, it's nice to know a tune went from the tradition to the church instead of the other way 'round.

Come, come, okthen: there are lots of other examples; more, I would hazard than from the Church to the tradition.

Our Church does a hymn where the phrase "and holy is His name" is repeated throughout.
The chorus goes something like this:

And holy is His name
Through all generations
Everlasting is His mercy
to the people He has chosen
And holy is His Name.

Hi Guest, Jer.
Yours is the same song Joe referenced up there back in '03, although the author's real name is David Haas.

There's another "Holy is His Name" by John Michael Talbot. Beautiful!

Did I say BOB Haas? Twice?
I've met David Haas and heard him speak at least twice since I posted that message. Now I get his name straight - most of the time. Some of his hymns are terrific and very singable, but many have a singer-songwriter style that I don't like. I like hymn writers to write songs congregations can sing. But I'm sorry I forgot Mr. Haas's name, nonetheless. Actually, though, in my defence, I'd like to say that it's Bob Hurd who's more likely to use traditional tunes.

Thanks guys. I was looking for this exact same song, and found the answers here! It took a lot of digging and specialized searching in Google, but I just want you all to know that even though this thread is so old...it's still helping people out!

:)

We sang this last night at the Franciscan church in Sacramento, where the music is always lovely. It's a great song.
