21 Sep 03 - 11:48 AM (#1022469) Subject: Origins: And Holy Is His Name From: okthen I accidentally caught the end of a hymn on television this morning and thought I new the tune, I don't know the proper title but the tune was "Wild Mountain Thyme" and where the words "will ye go lassie go" I heard "and holy is his name" I tried a search but came up with nothing (but that doesn't mean it hasn't been discussed here before). What I want to know is have there been previous threads on this subject and which was borrowed (the folk tune for the hymn,or vice versa?) cheers bill |

I think I've heard it, but I can't find it just now. Haas is one of the Big Three Catholic hymn writers just now, along with Hurd and Haugen. He does some good stuff, but it's usually Hurd who does lovely things with traditional folk tunes. -Joe Offer- |

It's in the Sprit and Song hymnal from OCP (Oregon Catholic Press). I don't have that hymnal, but you can get better information from OCP, 1-800-LITURGY (548-8749). I've met David Haas and heard him speak at least twice since I posted that message. Now I get his name straight - most of the time. Some of his hymns are terrific and very singable, but many have a singer-songwriter style that I don't like. I like hymn writers to write songs congregations can sing. But I'm sorry I forgot Mr. Haas's name, nonetheless. Actually, though, in my defence, I'd like to say that it's Bob Hurd who's more likely to use traditional tunes. -Joe, of the fading mind- |
