I am not sure if this exists on the data base, I have checked under the title I have, and also under 'O' for Out & 'C' for Come all ye.

Come all ye young miners, and listen to my song
And I'll tell y'how they treated me when my hewin' days were done,
When I was young, I used to be a miner like yourself,
But now t'day when me hairs turned grey they've stood me on the shelf.

CHORUS: For 50 years I'd worked in the pits & many's the change I've seen,
When I was young and a man was done, they'd set him on the screens,
But now t'day when y'hairs turned grey like a squadie with an auld peg leg,
They say that your n'use n'more, get out on the road & beg.

Me age it is just 64 but for work I've got ne chance,
And they've bard me from the championships in me clogs for the belt to dance,
They said that I was growin' auld f'dancin' I was ne use,
They telt me t'hoy me clogs away, and get in to the hard work-hoose.

CHORUS: For 50 ... etc.

So come all ye young miners, take heed of what I say,
Get out of the pits while your young enough to make out your own way,
Cos if ye divvent and y'stay below y'll wake t'find one day,
Y'r'all washed up & y've got the push because y'hairs turned grey

I hope I ain't wasted me time typin' that! :{D

A. L. Lloyd printed a set in Come All Ye Bold Miners (revised edn., 1978, 144-5): The Old Clog-Dancer's Song. He noted:

"Sung by Pete Elliott of Rickleton, Co. Durham (23 August 1976). He had the song from an old miner, Johnson Ellwood, of Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham, himself once a champion clog-dancer."

The set he prints differs a little from yours; it begins Noo then, marras, what fettle? for one thing. Where did you get it?

Johnson Ellwood used to say that the song was written by his father who put it to the tune of "The Dan Leno Hornpipe" a favourite of clog dancers. Bob Davenport recorded it on his album (I think) "Pal Of My Cradle Days" and begins "Noo Then Marras etc". This would preceed Pete's version by a couple of years

Have a look HERE to see what is presumably the original version of this song which has changed a few times over the years.
I recorded a version of it a couple of years ago but mine was what is in "Come All Ye Bold Miners" with an additional verse of what has turned out to be the chorus in the original. I'd be interested to know where the verse that starts "So come all of you pitman lads take heed to what I say..." came from and who fiddled around with the original version (maybe Pete Elliot?)

Cheers
Mark

Here's the text that Mark Dowding referred to. The broadside was printed in Newcastle. This song was printed without dialect, as shown, but dialect is implied by rhyming "use" with "workhouse." Another song on the same broadside is written in dialect, using "ye" for "you" and "dinnet gang doon" for "don't go down" etc.

THE OLD MINER SONG
Words, Jim Ellwood. Tune, "Dan Leno."

Good evening, friends. I greet you all, and I hope you are all well.
I have just dropped in amongst you now a story for to tell.
I used to be, when I was young, a miner like yourself,
But now today, when my hair turns grey, they have put me on the shelf.

CHORUS: So while I am amongst you now, if you'll give me the chance,
Along with me you will agree, I still can do a clog dance.
So if you'll pay attention, to please you I will try.
I'll show to you some champion step I danced in days gone by.

I have been a miner for fifty years and some changes I have seen.
When I was young and a man was done, they set him on the screens,
But now today when his hair turns grey, they kick him on the leg,
And tell him that he is no use; he can go out on the road and beg. CHORUS

Me age is just seventy-nine and for work I have no chance,
And they barred me from the championship in my clogs for the belt to dance.
They said that I am growing old; at dancing I am no use.
They told me to put my clogs away, and go into the workhouse. CHORUS

as far as I am aware, Bob Davenport took Jim Ellwood's poem, re-wrote it, and recorded it on a Trailer LP in 1971. Johnson Ellwood , champion clog dancer of Chester le Street, used to sing a 'calling-on' song before he danced, with quite different words and Bob used Johnson's tune for his revised song version of Jim Ellwood's poem. Johnson's song can be heard on a BBC LP 'Northumbrin folk'- around 1972 (I was the melodeon player for Johnson's clog dance on that). Johnson was well known and respected by Bob, and by me, and we were in his company on a regular basis at that time. The song is not by Johnson Ellwood, even if Pete Elliott thought it was )a natural mistake)- it is really a composite from various original performers!

re Johnson's 'calling on song'- I only have it verbally but it was a bit like-
'I will sing of champions of champions in their day
Who used to be not long ago but they are passed away
But there are some, and still they come on championship parade
But there was none like Dan Leno when he was on the stage..

Oh where is Dan Leno now, where is good old Dan
He used to be on the music hall, he played before the band
At dancin' he was the champion, but now his days are gone,
For men like Ward and Tom Robson for the championship have come

But just to keep memory of those champions passed away,
I'll dance for you a step or two that were done in the day
So if you'll pay attention, and LISTEN to he beat
I'll do me best to please you with the clogs upon my feet...

and straight into the dance....

Johnson won many a competition in the four Northern Counties (Durham. Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland)- he said that Lancashire and Yorkshire 'didn't matter'- but he never had (from my memory in the late 1960s) any of his many championship belts- as he said to me- 'Why no man, they got pawned alang the Scotswood Road-----   hard times they were...

What an interesting piece of history! Thanks for this. I've often heard Bob singing it. Anyone seen him lately. Last saw him about 5 years ago striding out across Camden.

It's on the L.P. "Bob Davenport and the Marsden Rattlers". The sleeve notes say that Bob made some changes to the words. It sounds to me like "get into the aad (old) workhouse".

Hi George- the post above was three years ago but good to hear from you- hope you're OK-    we're fine, here in Galloway- would probably not have left Ireland but for the feckin Brexit nonsense- we were too near the border. Health is good here in Galloway- naturally isolated & selling soft fruit at the gate & keeping sheep.
Hope you are still singing & looking forward to the end of this virus & starting Bray singers again?
Johnson was a great old character- he would ask me to set the tempo before he began- he'd keep his hands behind his back & indicate if my speed was OK or needed to change before he started. He danced to what he called 'Dan Leno's hornpipe'- we would know it better as 'Harvest Home', but very slow...
We did a week with him at the Sunderland Empire in 1969, with as main guests the stars of the folk scene, like the Spinners. Bob Davenport had the choice of choosing the guests- two were interesting choices. Monday was Miki & Griff and Saturday was the Kinks.
Johnson asked for two chairs to dance between- he was aged 69 at the time- I asked if he was having a problem- he said 'why no man, it's jist for a bit o' sympathy'- ever the showman!
He also said he'd been at the Empire before- as a 10 year old as mascot with his dad, as support for Jackie Coogan!

listening again to the tune used by Bob Davenport on the old LP mentioned above, there is a vague similarity between that tune & the 'Harvest Home' tune-

I am not aware of ab actual 'Dan Leno's hornpipe' as distinct from the ones recorded with that title by 'English' bands, and based on Bob's tune ?- any thoughts?
