Lloyd printed a set in Come All Ye Bold Miners (revised edn., 1978, 144-5): The Old Clog-Dancer's Song. He noted: "Sung by Pete Elliott of Rickleton, Co. Durham (23 August 1976). He had the song from an old miner, Johnson Ellwood, of Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham, himself once a champion clog-dancer." The set he prints differs a little from yours; it begins Noo then, marras, what fettle? for one thing. Where did you get it? |

Bob Davenport recorded it on his album (I think) "Pal Of My Cradle Days" and begins "Noo Then Marras etc". This would preceed Pete's version by a couple of years |

I recorded a version of it a couple of years ago but mine was what is in "Come All Ye Bold Miners" with an additional verse of what has turned out to be the chorus in the original. I'd be interested to know where the verse that starts "So come all of you pitman lads take heed to what I say..." came from and who fiddled around with the original version (maybe Pete Elliot?) This song was printed without dialect, as shown, but dialect is implied by rhyming "use" with "workhouse." Another song on the same broadside is written in dialect, using "ye" for "you" and "dinnet gang doon" for "don't go down" etc. THE OLD MINER SONG Words, Jim Ellwood. Tune, "Dan Leno." Johnson Ellwood , champion clog dancer of Chester le Street, used to sing a 'calling-on' song before he danced,with quite different words and Bob used Johnson's tune for his revised song version of Jim Ellwood's poem. Johnson's song can be heard on a BBC LP 'Northumbrin folk'- around 1972 (I was the melodeon player for Johnson's clog dance on that). Johnson was well known and respected by Bob, and by me, and we were in his company on a regular basis at that time. The song is not by Johnson Ellwood, even if Pete Elliott thought it was )a natural mistake)- it is really a composite from various original performers! |

Oh where is Dan Leno now, where is good old Dan He used to be on the music hall, he played before the band At dancin' he was the champion, but now his days are gone, For men like Ward and Tom Robson for the championship have come But just to keep memory of those champions passed away, I'll dance for you a step or two that were done in the day So if you'll pay attention, and LISTEN to he beat I'll do me best to please you with the clogs upon my feet... and straight into the dance.... Johnson won many a competition in the four Northern Counties (Durham. Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland)- he said that Lancashire and Yorkshire 'didn't matter'- but he never had (from my memory in the late 1960s) any of his many championship belts- as he said to me- 'Why no man, they got pawned alang the Scotswood Road----- hard times they were... |

Health is good here in Galloway- naturally isolated & selling soft fruit at the gate & keeping sheep. Hope you are still singing & looking forward to the end of this virus & starting Bray singers again? Johnson was a great old character- he would ask me to set the tempo before he began- he'd keep his hands behind his back & indicate if my speed was OK or needed to change before he started. He danced to what he called 'Dan Leno's hornpipe'- we would know it better as 'Harvest Home', but very slow... We did a week with him at the Sunderland Empire in 1969, with as main guests the stars of the folk scene, like the Spinners. Bob Davenport had the choice of choosing the guests- two were interesting choices. Monday was Miki & Griff and Saturday was the Kinks. Johnson asked for two chairs to dance between- he was aged 69 at the time- I asked if he was having a problem- he said 'why no man, it's jist for a bit o' sympathy'- ever the showman! He also said he'd been at the Empire before- as a 10 year old as mascot with his dad, as support for Jackie Coogan! |
