BS: HELP with London airports

I'm planning some travel in Europe next month, and wonder if any UK 'Catters could advise me on getting from one London airport to another. I'm considering flying from Paris to London-Luton on one day, and flying out of Stanstead on the next, bound for Denmark (this seems to be the cheapest and quickest way of getting from Paris to Aarhus).

What's involved in getting from Luton to Standstead? And where would you recommend I spend the night near Standstead, so I can catch an early flight?

Thanks for any help.

Jerry

I have not made the journey myself but the shuttle bus seems to make an easy journey of it:-)

Good luck and if you are up in the North West of England on your travels be sure to look us up in Manchester!

I see canals, this is Amsterdam...

Don't know about trains from Stanstead, the shuttle bus service is pretty good, but there are good, regular trains from the centre of London to Luton.

Have you checked out City Airport at all? They land in the middle of Docklands and have excellent links to the whole of London by car, bus and rail. They also do international flights, but the take off is a little precipitous.... it appears to go up at about 45 degrees or more to avoid the Canary Wharf towers.....

Stansted (Stanstead is somewhere else) is served by a good express train from Liverpool Street Station in London.

I was gooing ti look up the train times for you from this site - but wouldn't you know it, there's a message up there saying ,"National Rail Enquiries -
Sorry, the site is currently closed for routine maintenance, please try again at a later time."

No help for the airport switch thing--but it seems surprising that flying from Paris to London, with attendant local transit costs, an overnight in a London hotel, and then a flight to Denmark, with attendant local transit costs, would be either less expensive or less time consuming than say, a railway ticket from Paris to Arhus--especially if you got a Eurailpass--

There is a hilton at Stanstead with a free bus service to the terminal. Nice pool gym sauna and steam.

Mcgrath - there must be a rule somewhere against getting your Mudcat posts printed a day later in the Guardian's letters page.

I know it sounds crazy to zigzag around, but I found that flying Paris to London to Denmark, with an overnight stay in between, really was cheaper by at least 60 pounds. Of course, I could have taken an overnight train through Hamburg, in a second-class seat the whole way, but the aches and sleeplessness wouldn't have been worth the savings: I'm no backpacking 20-something.   Besides, this way I get a night of drinking English draught beer.

Thanks for all the help. Any chance there'd be folk music in a Dunmow pub on a Thursday evening?

No sessions in the Dunmow area on a Thursday but you could try the folk club in Bishops Stortford.

Peter,

Thanks for the tip. McGrath of Harlow mentioned this same club to me, and they are having a singers' night on October 16, so I will be there!

And Jerry was at Stortfolk last night and he gave us a few great songs from New England. The Mudcat gets you places you'd never have known were there.

Next stop on his European tour is Denmark, he told me - where he's been promised there should be some good sessions.

And I've just realised this was a genuine music related thread, not a BS one!
