Well, My lovely future bride came upon a site advertising online IT courses to get the certifications...and well before she did anything Jeanie asked me about it...I took a look at it www.selfcert.com and it appears to look ok to me....but with we both wanted to be real sure...and me knowing there are plenty of nice folks around here who would have a better idea of this sort of thing....

thanks everyone.

No way I can see to tell from the web site whether they are a certificate mill or a technical training center. One way to find out is to ask for the names of some of their gradfuates and call them, but even so it is a bit iffy.

It looks kosher. The certifications offered actually exist but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. The most impressive thing I noticed was their legal disclaimer from Red Hat Linux. http://www.redhat.com/legal/legal_statement.html   If you're interested, e-mail Red Hat and ask if their relationship wuth them is good and how long it had existed. The site owner seems to be this person.

You can check the local Better Business Bureau or equivalent.

You can also call your Attorney General's consumer hotline -- most states have some such, or just call the AG's office and ask.

I'm not familiar with these folks, but our office uses SmartForce (www.smartforce.com), and I've been pretty satisfied with them. I don't know what certifications they offer. And I don't know what the retail rates are-- we just get a group rate and it's covered by the department's training budget.
