Okay, here's space for some silly stuff. If you want to see what people said last year here is that thread. And the straight hints for 2003 are here.

There once was a mensch from Old Philly
He wrote songs, oh so sharp and so silly
With his pedigree sound, the 'cat he hung round
He kibitzed! he brissed! He was mitzvahed!

His scholarly tomes, guided mothers in homes
He warned against germs and rope blisters!

Then he took up the uke
To forget small kids' puke
And we lost him
To mishegoss, sisters!

Greetings Trevor...

I see from reading your hints that you like landscape pictures of Africa. You also say that you would like to have a little something that represents where I live. I don't live in Africa, but I do have some lovely landscapes on my planet. Perhaps you would like some photos of these as well? Photography is one of my hobbies, in my copious spare time.

And have you not yet seen Chocolat? My, my. Will VHS tapes from my planet play on the machines in your country?

Do you like chocolate candies?

Love,

Sandy Claws

These little poems are so much fun!
I hope they don't annoy or bore ya'
Although I pen them on the run.
They represent GIFT NUMBER ONE!
Of eight, like candles lighted for ya'
On mother's precious bright menoryah! [sic]
Gifts two and three will guard your pinkies
From hot pots, trays, or messy twinkies!
So watch the mail for greens and blues
your santee loves ya, me's to yous!

Chanteyranger, I don't seem to have received your note. You know, the one that gives me and the elves a clue as to what you want for Christmas (the organisation cannot, however, guarantee an exact match with clients' requests and reserves the right to alter things and use it's judgement, without reference, prejudice or anything else for that matter). So be a good Chantey and stick it up the chimbley right now. Thank you and good day.

Greetings Trevor...

Sweeties, dainties... here on my planet we call them candies, but you know what they say about a rose by any other name. There is a particular confection that my part of the planet is famous for, with chocolate and nuts. You aren't allergic to nuts, are you?

Sherry and mince pies sounds divine, although I allow you'll have to watch me on the sherry. I am so fond of it that I have been known to lose track of how much I imbibe. Not hard to do with a nectar that tastes like raisins melted in caramel. And you won't have to grease the chimney much for me - I'm rather slight of build.

Cheers----

Sandy Claws

ps to Sian - I have seen the licorice socks! It sounds like a fun little project to decorate packages with.

Your wishes for Christmas won't stick!
Though you haven't been bad,
It is terribly sad,
That you won't do the Santa Hint Shtick!

So what's a poor Santa to do?
In deciding on presents for you?
A bustle? A Candle?
Or a brick with a handle?
I'd do better with guidance, it's true!

So don't flit about like a fairy
(Or a fur-bearing beast called a Rary)
Just sharpen your thumbs
And write down what comes
In response to the damn questionairrie!!

Otherwise -- copralite from deepest Africa!!!!

Anyone out there who knows a certain Rock Chic in Kent, would you be so very kind as to knock her up and advise her her desiderata are wanting. Or perhaps, give her a ring and let her know her wants are still desired.

Thanks terribly much,

My dear Edain,

I have read your details most carefully and as someone who is older and wiser of the ways of the world and of men than you are, I shall make sure that my presents to you are of the most suitable and sensible kind for a young gel alone in a foreign country.
Miss Catsphiddle (I am not really sure I approve of that name by the way!) has at least exercised some common sense in giving me your name and I take it upon myself to ensure you are well equipped for your journeys through foreign parts.

I am at this moment working my way through the "Colonial and Foreign" section of "Peabodys essential guide for young women abroad" and should have your trunk of supplies packed and dispatched in short order.

In the meantime, do not speak to anyone who does not speak English, and be very suspicious of anyone not wearing a collar and tie. They are unlikely to be gentlemen and may wish to take advantage of your circumstances. As my late husband "The Colonel" used to say when we were out in Africa..........well maybe I shouldn't say it, we live in different times now.......sigh......

Robin, oh Robin, I read all your clues.
You like Celtic and swing and them old country blues;
You have a couple of brand new holes in your head,
And you eat nothing but low-fat, low-sodium bread.
So the goodies that come from our trees are no good,
Unless you can munch on chips that are wood.
But there are so many things that you did say would please
So I ought to find you a nice gift with ease.
So I'll hop in the sleigh and take a trip down
To ... oops, almost told you the name of the town
I'd better leave now and not further delay it
If you think of anything else then please say it!

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Goofy Hints 2003
From: GUEST,Edain`s Secret Santa

Well I NEVER!!

My Dear Edain,

I have just had the most distressing news. My Tenure as Head Mistress of Miss Warburtons School for young Ladies, is to come to a premature end! To say that I am shocked that a person of my stature in the community should be accused of such misdemeanors is, to be frank with you, an indication of the erosion of the values of modern society. To call into question my need to use school funds in the way I see as most beneficial, is yet further evidence of "the tail wagging the dog" and shows the power of these petty beaurocrats and accountants who are all jumped up clerks and not a single one of them from a "good" family I shouldn't wonder!
I tried to explain to them that the tip I had for the 3.45 at Haydock came from the most IMPECABLE source but they just wouldn't listen! And when they had the gall to come bursting into my rooms in the early hours of the morning as I was leafing through the underwear section of "Peabodys essential guide for young women abroad" (Illustrated) it just made matters worse! No matter how many times I tried to explain that I was looking for suitable attire for my young friend in the colonies (that is you of course my dear) they seemed to think that you should be able to fend for yourself!
These people are philistines and have NO experience of the DANGERS that face young women abroad. They also seemed to take a "dim view" of the bottles of Gin I had in the room. Again I tried to explain that I still suffer from the malaria that I picked up in my time in Africa and that the Gin was merely to flavour the Tonic Water (which I am sure an educated gel like you knows has quinine, a well established malaria cure). At that point I felt I had no option but to resign! One`s honor can only stand so much!
I feel terribly disappointed for my gels here at the school, I fear for their future. But at least they have their parents to fall back on. However, you my dear, have no one, save myself. I therefore promise to devote my efforts to ensuring you welfare from now on. I have a little money put on one side (the horse came first by the way), so you need have no fear that I will be deserting you in my hour of need and personal distress. I do enjoy our little "chats". Will you be replying at some time in the near future?

yours in adversity,

ESS

Oh, sorry, SS! I've been neglecting Mudcat and slaving instead over a hot computer to try to earn some moola so I don't have to knit my Secret Santee some liederhosen out of dried herbs and acorns (and a hat to match).

Ayuh, orange carnations 'specially if soaked in Cinnamint flavoring to make my mouth peel if I suck on 'em. (Eee-ooo, I cringe just to think of it.)

How about a part time job that isn't in Dilbert Land? Can you rustle up one of those within the budget?

My taste in vulcanized marine creatures isn't limited to squid or octo- & decapods. My collection includes rubber jellyfish (glow in the dark!), skates, a shark that regurgitates a bubble of body parts . . . I've also been known to have a few flamingoes around the ol' hacienda . . . including an 8 foot tall plush one that dwarfs our friend Micca. (There's a picture around somewhere of that -- Micca's fondling her. She's still pining.)

I'm also seriously appreciate skulls found on woodland walks (or desert walks or whatever) -- and I currently have no snake or bird skulls. I also like shells and interesting rocks. I'm not only a closet naturalist, but I really should have grown up to be an archaeologist.

Oh, and maps. Did I tell you about maps? Like maps that show locations of squid and flamingoes.

Gotta run.

O bugger I thinks I'm coming down with the flu

Hot toddies I'll drink
To make me feel well
And help me to think
And try not to tell

A frog on your list
May not be far away
A tunnel to dig
Gets you there in a day

My City is grand

Hot toddies did work
And got rid of the flu
Hope you are ready
So here some more clues

My country is one that contains many tribes
We regularly taunt each other with jibes
The weather is never out of the news
And no, we never invented "the blues"

Get out that map
Don't get in a flap
No more clues will I dangle
Now you work out the angle ;O))))

Dear Fairy Santa
Just thought of something I forgot to put on my list (I have been a good girlie honest) a cd with whistle tunes , I am trying to learn the penny whistle, I'm a slow learner!!

Now what can I leave out for you when you visit, biscuits, milk or something a little stronger
*grin*

Thank you and i promise never to be naughty again....this year!!!

And an offer, not shoddy,
To put out some toddy?
My Santee is clearly a treasure!

Just one caution: you're Santa's not haughty,
Especially after a tot -- he
Is happier, really,
When spirits soar freely,
So please go ahead and be naughty!

Oy -- Jeri DOES have a weath of insider info, since she's had to put up with living here at the Nottingham Fawlty Towers several times over the years.

Ayuh -- I'm a tea rather than coffee drinker mostly, but I'm one of those odd ducks who doesn't require brown stuff in cups in order to get the day started. My favorites include Lapsang Souchong -- I like my tea AND my scotch smoky -- and jasmine. And that Russian orange and spice tea.

Let's see, what else haven't I told you about? Have I told about 35 years worth of gravestone rubbings on the walls or the collection of rubberstamps and marking devices (and printing paraphernalia) cluttering every flat surface (that isn't already covered by books and papers and CDs and LPs and stuff)?

Dearest Edain,

How wonderful to hear from you! It seems "Daddy" has done the trick! I received a visit in my "accommodation" during the early hours of the morning from the Deputy Governor of this accursed establishment, accompanied by a most unpleasant Detective Constable who, in exchange for my "winnings", secured my release!!

A large price to pay for my liberty but this is how these things apparently work in this third world country that still tries to call itself ENGLAND!

Anyway, I am heading east on the train as we speak, passing through Millstone Grit country and towards the great Vale. How I long to feel the Boulder Clay of home under my feet again. I can say no more as I am sure my communications are being monitored and there is a strange man peering over the top of a newspaper at the back of the carriage who I am convinced is following me! (they seem to think I know something about the missing silver from the school dining room!!)

I am pleased you have taken my advice on how to deal with life abroad. Keep your guard up at all times my dear, I know you are a sensible sort. Dont worry, supplies will be with you as soon as I am settled.

Speeding there way there and back

I am a Santee!"

From his Santa,
Jokes do not fly
But from his scarce hints
Oh, what shall I?

But no, a Santa
He does not lack,
His Santa shall get him
A paper sack!

Tune books, perhaps
From a used shop nook
Here's a good one,
"The Jewish Fake Book."

It could be food
From another land
Designed to cause his
Waistband expand!

Ah, a kazoo,
Or shirt from a zoo
A toy that goes moo
A bucket of goo!

A purple backpack
A blue spice rack
Or tacky tie tack
You can't take back

So sweet Bassic
Do not fear
Despite your worry
Your Santa is here.

Your Santa was poor
At timing their post
To be some other time
Than their other notes.

But if you'd not have
Some tacky gift here
More hints please
All in good cheer

Your Santa will choose
Your gift with great care
Even if they do not
Yet know where!

I am stunned and astounded!
I`m jumping with Glee!
My Secret Santa
is talking to me!

I have been impatient
I`m sorry for that
but into the air
I`m now throwing my hat!

You need more suggestions
on that I will think
Oh! I do collect "t" shirts
related to "drink"!

Anything musical
I am sure to adore
from an Old Time CD
to a Beethoven Score

Food is a problem
it could be quite dicey
my stomach wont tolerate
anything spicey :-(

But sweet things and candy
some interesting cheese
or a few "Drops of Brandy"
are likely to please

A book about history
local or other
is sure to be read
from cover to cover

I also read fiction
if the story is good
its one way to keep me
out of the pub!

Sci fi and historical
are my favourite read
McCaffrey I have
but lots of others I need

So here is the start
of a list you can think on
The next clue will come to you
writen in Klingon!!

I`ve got a Santa!                           I`ve got a Santa!

Okay. I've read your serious hints, now I want the goofy ones. If I don't know what countries you already have, I can't possibly choose the right one for you. Do you prefer your martial arts in oil, water colour, or pastel? Exactly what kind of "stuff" do you make? Are your essential oils olive, peanut, or motor?

Please advise -- CC

The tree was all ready to ship, and the Feds took it! Yes! And it will be used for the Christmas tree on the Mall in Washington, DC and GWB will push the button to light it!! If I were you, I'd dash down there and just before the Prez lights the tress, throw yourself in front of the stand screaming, "Mine! It's mine! Mine, do you hear me?!?

In the meantime, I'll be looking around the US for a really nifty gifty.

Perhaps some fresh catfish from Mississippi? Freshly caught cod from Maine? Fresh Californian squid? Crawdads from the Bayous? or gator tail? Haunch of Alaskan musk ox? Oregon broccoli? Idaho potatoes? Corn from the fertile fields of Illinois? Canadian bacon?

I'd do Texas, but there's nothing there worth much of anything.

New York...no, wait, you're there.

I don't intend to ship any of this next day express or frozen....

Christmas at Halloween, what next? It's cruelty to expect someone to keep a pressie that long. Or maybe MMario's santa is going to give him more pressies.

And besides the husband is refusing to be gift wrapped. I've been trying hard all week, now I don't want to damage his teeth, but I am getting annoyed & if he won't behave I might have to whack him one with the broomstick or the pumpkin, but he is gunna get in that box or else. Then I'll pack everything in nicely & send them off in time for christmas (not Halloween)

I can't come around here very often, but I do check in sometimes. If you've said anything, I've not seen it. But that's okay. I know this is a busy time of year.

Most of my details from last year still apply. I like tea and tea-related stuff. I'd love your music, if you record it. I don't wear jewelry. I'd like any kind of stuff from your specific area, like local photos, photos of you where you live, or a local newspaper, perhaps. I was in journalism more years than I care to admit and really get a kick out of papers from other areas.

Santa,
I think there has been a bit of a misunderdstanding. I do not want your husband. That would be like sending me used shoes (one reason I despise bowling). I want a new one Well, not a buy toy but not with a divorce lawyer in tow either. And after the fiasco with Big Mick, this one has to a ring upfront!

So...rich, all his teeth, single, ring, over 46,knows to put the down,...the list is getting longer. I prefer banjo players. They are sexier, you know. And finally, put some airholes in the box. I don't want him to smell bad when he arrives.

But, most importantly, somehow the name on the first post got changed from "Bee-dubya-ell's Silly Santa" to "Bee-dubya-ell's Jolly Old Elf".

Now, that's not a trick that just anyone can pull off. In fact, it's something that only the chosen few, the elite, the omnipotent, the Joe Clones can do. That means my Secret Santa is a Joe Clone! Oh! My heart does go "pitter-patter" that I, a lowly hillbilly guitar player, should have a Joe Clone for a Secret Santa! I feel so humble I could just shit.

Wool of bat and tongue of dog,

Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,

Cool it with a baboon's blood,

With notes of wood and brass and gold!
And voices of the clarion band
And harmonies and trumpets grand
And simple strings and heartfelt woes
And tears that always clog the nose,
And love that always swells the chest --
Of all God's gifts, Song is the best!!
Thus let your highest Xmas thrill
Be that your day be music-filled
And songs unheard and never played
Color your life on Christmas Day!!

But think not ill if late they show
For postal clerks are sometimes slow,
And traveling from a distant shore
Your songs will be worth waiting for!!!

Damn straight I've been good this year, SS!

I've been so good this year that it's downright sickening! I've been to church every single day; I've foreborne from teaching "Bastard King of England" to the kids at storyhour; I've mostly kept my knowledge of How To Make Things Go BOOM! to myself, sharing it only with my nine-year-old nephew; I haven't cracked into either the CIA or the NSA databases; I haven't kicked any puppies or kitties; I've saved some money even; I've given up hard liquor, fast women, and low companions for hard companions, low women and fast liquor -- why, I haven't even sold any dirty pictures to preschoolers!

I haven't gotten a tattoo or had a hole bored into part of me, and I've even shaved most every day. And no matter how great the temptation I've resisted it, except when I didn't.

And I've even told the truth, up to a point.* Of course, to do this I've had to give up fishing and social intercourse in general. Realizing that my body is a temple and my soul is pure, I think that I can safely say that I have, in thought, word, and deed, been the epitome of good this year.

Watcha gonna git me?

*The point where I start lying.

I admit that the one thing I do need is human contact. I thrive on human contact. I live for human contact. I am fortunate enough to have a small circle of friends that I can recieve human contact from, but I feel I am lacking a certain amount of a more spiritual Santa type of contact.
I promise if you contact me I will leave you some cookies and tequila on the nightstand. I might even be into waking up and sharing them with you, but Santa, I am starting to doubt your existance. I was always told you were out there somewhere and just want you to know, I do believe in you.

I have to admit that I'm glad I am expected to post the pressie to you rather that drop it off on Christmas Eve night considering my world locator program is rather confused by your address. I wanted to pull down a satellite image, but to no avail. I'm sure the pressie will get there fine. (I know I've been to your place every year, but, to let you in on a little secret - I never know whose home I'm at until one of the reindeer tell me the name. My head is so filled up with the good and the bad kiddies, that I have little idea where I am until they tell me and the appropriate present pops out of the bag (Mrs. Claus loves making me use hi-tech gadgets). Oops - my microwave popcorn is ready. Donner says hi (he takes dictation rather well, don't you think?).

The fearful day draws nigh
When o'er the poles all lit by souls
Around the world you'll fly.
And bearing gifts to every soul,
In ways we can't conceive,
But somehow ending up next day
With 'most all gifts received!
Now there's a miracle in itself
A feat of awe, by thunder!
How does one fat guy pull it off?
It makes a body wonder!
But never mind -- the voice box now,
You know was just me, joking
In fact my voice box has improved
Because I gave up smoking!
So worry not, nor fret nor frown
Because you must be thrifty.
Just lay your two and six pence down
And bring me something nifty!!

Dear Stephen,

As you may know, your behaviour over the past year has been subject to review in accordance with the terms and conditions required for acceptance to 'Santa's Nice list' (for further information please refer to our helpful guide 'Naughty Neville gets coal for Christmas'). Unfortunately there has been a small incident in our records department (we would like to reassure you that the Elf involved has been disciplined and the sherry moved to a higher shelf) during which, documents relating to your recent activities were inadvertantly destroyed. In light of this regrettable occurance the decision has been taken to place your name on the Nice list and we are pleased to inform you that your Secret Santa gift is now on it's way to you. We hope you have a very merry Christmas and will be a very good boy next year.

Yes! I've been good, my prezzie, I deserve it.
A cheery wave and they depart

So, there it sits in my front room

I thought the reindeer were typically male - I'd hoped that you, Santa, were progressive, but with names like Donner and Blitzen . . . What self-respecting reindeer doe would want a name like that?

As for reindeer police, you clearly don't have your sleigh radio tuned to FAA or military frequencies. Growing up with a Colonel in the USAF next door, he would let me listen in as report after report of your travels throughout U.S. airspace was relayed. Be careful, Big Brother is most definately watching you.

As for being a "good little catter," please take in consideration that I am, after all, a blackcat.

I don't care if you open it up,
I don't care if you shout it out
I don't care if you can't wait
Or, even if you hesitate!
What's yours is yours
Come through quite soon,
So soon, ya know, I just might swoon,
I cannot believe they made it so quick
It is a first for a cross-pond St. Nick!
So, suit yourself and make it Wight
Tomorrow, today, or in the night,
On Solstice or on Christmas Eve.
I just gotta know, do you believe
In wishes come true, dreams received?

I can tell you it's not from Kalamazoo,
But from right here at the Northpole-a-zoo
It might have a whisker or cat hairs attached
Look for all colours, I know they're not matched!
I am not some guru sitting in wisdom
Cross-legged, chanting, in a some lofty kingdom,
Just someone who giggled with joy in the giving
And, thanks you for playing and *virtually* living
Right here on the Mudcat, the folkie's home planet
Now...opening early won't hurt, well...cannit?**BG**

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Goofy Hints 2003

Good, SS? How does one define "good"? And isn't "good" transitory and in many ways dependent upon the circumstances surrounding one?

I spent the last couple or three days in Provo, Utah, near your hometown of Sandy, Utah (I assume that's why you're called "Sandy" anyway). Since I wasn't in Pocatello, the concept of "good" shifted to what would be considered "good" in Provo. As you know, that's the home of Brigham Young University and the LDS Missionary school. So by rights I shouldn't have consumed alcohol or caffeine and led a life free from "sin". Oh, I just remembered something I did there, so, ah, well....

Anyway, the concept of "goodness" is not only relative to your spatial location, it is also relative to your temporality. I mean, sometimes "good" means not shooting your neighbor, but othertimes "good" means offing the dude, right? So anyway, I haven't busted caps on anybody recently, so I guess I've been good in recent temporality.

So yeah, I guess I've been good, Santa, at least recently in Pocatello.

I think I saw your Pocatello elf the other day. Looks like an elf, anyway, flattened out on I-15. Looked like the ol' elf had been coming from Madame Jinky's Elf Bar & Bordello and didn't quite beat an 18-wheeler across the Interstate. That could be why you haven't had any reports lately. If you ask, the State Police will probably send you the dude's hat; I don't thing you'd want the rest of your ex-elf.

Home again, home again, jiggedy jig!! Secret Santa, your little pre Christmas gift from the Getaway really cheered me up. You see, I was in a hotel room, as part of a very intense campaign. I had been away from home for two weeks, was so lonely and tired, and no access to the Internet. Couldn't even Mudcat. I was getting things out of the trunk of my car, and ...lo and behold....there was the Christmas Ale. I had forgotten it there, as my life has been a blur since I got home from FSGW. Fortunately the weather was cool, and it was the perfect temperature (cellar temp) for drinking. So I sat in my room, played my guitar, drank the wonderful gift of Ale, and thought about the precious friends I have made here. Thanks, Santa.

All the best,

Sad to say, that was the Pocatello elf you saw, never really did a good job anyway. Now I need to transfer duties (keeping tabs on all the I-dee-ho-ho-ho folks) to another elf. My choices are the elves in Boise, Helena, Salt Lake City and Yellowstone. I really like the Yellowstone elf for the job. He's not too, well you know, not too much like the SLC elf. Boise and Helena offices are a bit technologically challenged. That settles it, I'll go for the Yellowstone office. That's such a beautiful place anyway, I may have to make a surprise visit to that office soon.

Whatever you did in SLC last week stays there. But you can be assured that I'll know EVERYTHING from here on out. I trust you'll be helping your lovely wife with all the Thanksgiving preparations. Remember, I'll get a full report.

I must let you know, Santa, I already have the new Jethro Tul Christmas CD...but anything else   you want to get me I am sure will be swell!
I am pretty good at guessing identities; or, maybe I am not...so let's have those silly hints!

Hahahaha, SS. Help her with Thanksgiving preparations! Hahahahaha!

For Thanksgiving I'll be flying to Chicago to meet her at Midway or even in Valparaiso, Indiana, where we'll be spending Thanksgiving. No, SS, I'm alone here right now (she went East to see the BYU-Notre Dame football game) and will be until I fly to her on the Tuesday before turkey day.

Oh yes, I will literally fly to her in the East, my Dawn, my Aurora, my Rising Sun of Love that spreads her glorious beams o'er the world, illuminating an otherwise cold, bleak, sere landscape with Love and if she were here she would be gagging.

Well, maybe I'll help a little, especially if she and her friend Mary go off to Shipshawanna to find quilt fabrics and I am left again alone with no company save Cornelius, the dachshund. 'Most anything is better than throw the ball, throw the ball, throw the ball ad infinitum.

Sorry that your Poky elf bought it, but I'm glad that you're not saddling Pocatello with the SLC bunch. Have you considered maybe Las Vegas? Or Seattle? Or don't you want us to have TOO much fun?

Paying homage to "Touchdown Jesus" and "We're Number One Moses" eh? She wasn't by any chance a HTH in her youth was she? Then again, someone living with "fat quarters" has to be pretty hip!

I don't know if she was HTH, but she was definitely SBS and HCA in SS, RC in PA, WU in STL, UA in OH, and did some AU in DC, too. Later, of course, she was AGC at UND. I myself am just a poor benighted (but good!) SFSGS in IL, CBHS in IL, QC (U) in IL, NIU in IL, SGT in ROK (USA), KSU in OH, CWRU in CLE, and UA in OH before becoming an AD at EPL, a LD at CCPL, and LD again at MPL. But of course, Sandy, you knew all this, didn't you?

and what did I see but
a parcel all wrapped and
addressed just to me!

Stamps so pretty
from a far away place
brought tears of joy and
a smile to my face

I looked for a hint but
none could I find
Who is my Santa
so sweet and so kind?

I opened the box and
Land sakes alive
not one little prezzie...
I found five!

All wrapped in paper
as neat as could be
I'm going to put them
under the tree.

So, to Bonny ol' England
from these shores way out west
I want to say Thank you!
I feel truly blessed!

Whatever for, SS old buddy, old pal? I helped with Thanksgiving dinner, making a nice salad of organic herbs, dried berries, sliced almonds, and herbed chevre. Why, I even went so far as to help you out, getting your drunken lout of a elf sprung from the Portage County Jail on a writ of Non Compis Contendere Corpus Juris Secundum -- it helps to be in a place with two lawyers, the faculty of a two law schools, and two good law libraries accesible (you'll be receiving a bill, I afraid, as these legal services don't come cheap, but I'm certain that you can make it up by farming out the services of your Valpo office to John Ashcroft). Boy oh boy, SS, do the costs of these obscure legal pleas add us! Whooo! I don't think I've ever seen so many zeros on a bill before -- why don't they just use scientific notation and be done with it?

All in all I've been, not just a good boy this Thanksgiving, but a downright wonderful one. And I'm flying back today so that I can volunteer in the leprosy hospital this evening.

Dear Peg,

Well your presents are all wrapped up now and ready to send as soon as the mail opens tomorrow!

Now how can I give some more hints?

I'm a reasonably frequent vistor to one or more of the places associated with what's in your package...

The posting place may give a clue...if you think very small indeed ...

I still have hope of finding the Sandman comics for a later mailing in my home town... the wild boar proved beyond my humble capabilities and the local environment I'm afraid.

Hmm...let's see what else? We share a lot of musical interests. I have met quite a lot of 'Catters and certainly we have some common contacts amongst them. However, I don't think this will make it any easier to guess my identity.

Archaeology.....certainly! Was involved in it for quite a while!

Old books? Love them as well! My oldest is Brookes' "Natual History of Quadrupedes - including Amphibious Animals, Frogs and Lizards - with Their Properties and Ufes in Medicine" printed at the Bobile and Sun, St. Paul's Church-Yard, 1763. I have it by my side now and interestingly it descibes Europeans' knowledge of indiginous peoples at that time. Here is what it says about the indiginous Californians.

We fhall clofe the defcription of the Americans with fome account of the Californians, which are the leaft known to the Europeans of any in that part of the world.....They all go naked, only the Women have a fort of petticoats, made of filk, grafs, or fkins....They are far from being handfome..... An interesting insight into the perspectives and social views of the time!

Perhaps that will do for now...I'll post some more hints soon!

All the best from your Secretive Yule-Person!

What an awful poem!! But a nice sentiment, so I will forgive the meter. Land and sea, huh? I guess yon Katphish believes in cross-pollination, or something of the sort? Anyway, as for my degree and kind of goodness, it of course all depends on your definition...I am sure I have done a very good job of being myself, but how valuable that is to anyone else, I can't say. However, if you are being truthful about having delivered my wonderful pressie into the hands of the Land and Sea Delivery Service, it is probably too late for any answer to make a difference, eh?

Thanks so much!! I can't wait. Well, actually I can, but only because I have to...:>))

And it's soooooooooooo hard to get good reindeer meat these days. As I was saying to Vixen just the other day, Vixen...Vixen? Where is Vixen? Why are you pointing at my sandwich?

Yoo-hoo

A bit of bad news Helen:

You're pressie(s) are all collected and packaged, but Santa is really tied up at the moment (and not by Mrs. Claus, this time) and is struggling to get a moment to send the pressie(s) to you. We had a bit of a problem with the old homestead - need to move and are still waiting on a yes from the new management (who'd a thunk that Santa would have to move to Downtown North Pole from the 'burbs 3+ weeks before Christmas!)

For good or bad, Santa's scooter broke down and getting time to get to the mail center is pretty difficult with commuting on the NPPSTS (North Pole Public Sleigh Transportation System).

You'll get your pressie(s) but they've got a long way to travel. I'm really sorry about that but please know that it all couldn't be helped.

Hello all,

I just read what I wrote - It's lighthearted, but I got to admit this Santa's going through some tough stuff right now. No need to really worry, but I am not sure where I'll be sleeping by this weekend and the scooter is dead for now and one of my job's been cut back.

I've got friends around who are helping, so that's good, but it's still tough. Send Santa some good thoughts and don't worry, Helen's pressie(s) will go out sometime this weekend.

Don't worry on my account, please. I'm just happy to know that I have a Secret Santa and that he/she is on the job.

Well Jeri, it left the depot today and you should have it soon.

One of the younger elves helped with the wrapping, so open carefully, you never know what you'll find in there. Mostly polystyrene beads and kitty litter if the mess on the workshop floor is anything to go by.

Keep the string. String is always useful.

Just a note to those of you who don't reside in the U.S. Sometimes I send you packages that wind up going through the U.S. Postal System before getting to your own country. The U.S. Post Office requires that I list the contents on the green form on the outside of the package.

Because of all the worries the American's have, I ususally try to be truthful in listing them, this however may give away the nature of your gifts. So, if you see the little square green sticky, avert your eyes if you truly want to be surprised.

Ho ho ho.

From: GUEST,Peigín's Secretive Yule-Person

Dear Peg,

Your pressie parcel should be nearing its destination by now. I hope to augment this with one or two other things as I mentioned before which you should get in the New Year.

Some more clues? You are doing well so far!

You are right about an Irish connection although my Irish is not at all good! Although I could still wish you...

Barróga agus póga

Oh bother...I've given my gender away now!

What do I know about Peg, well for a start....

Tá guth binn, ceolmhar aicí

from the evidence that I have heard!

And me? Well it is purported that I am some sort of musician and sometimes play Irish and Scottish (and Breton...and that gives me another idea...!) traditional music (it being in the genes so to speak) but also other genres (in fact that's what I do much more of these days). My instruments include several different sorts of six string things, different sorts of eight string things, three and four string things and many types of hittable things! I have also experimented less successfully with squeezable things and blowable things...(flutes and whistles for those of you with dirty minds!). In fact, it could be said that I suffer from GAS (although I am not Catspaw...).

What other clues can I offer?

I do not drink (unusual for a Mudcatter...!)

Nuair a bhíos an braon istigh bíonn an chiall amuigh.

I have a worthwhile and interesting job...

Ní thuirsítear fear na héadála.

And I do not aspire to wealth or material things...

Is buaine port ná glór na n-éan,
Is buaine focal ná toice an tsaoil.

All very best wishes to you!

And another thing - when it arrives, in order to maximize your Christmas morning surprise, please resist the urge to read the little green label, as the North Pole customs people demand an itemized list of the contents. Perhaps a kindly postal worker will deface that for you. Also, the return name and address is that of a fictitious character who only exists outside the reality of Mudcat. The gift is of course from me, Santa, eh?

Got my present and it's from the U.K.! Great thing is that I get to open it on Yule like I have been able to for the past 2 years. All my friends will be there to see it.

Thank you Santa. I look forward to figuring out who thou art and see what you've sent.

Hi there, Mary. I hope you have been good and not naughty, because it is too late now to go and get your pressie out of the sleigh. It's right at the bottom under a mountain of other pressies so the elves have told me that there can be no going back on naughty/nice decisions at this late stage.

They're getting too naughty for their own good. Next thing you know they will be joining the Union. Just see if they like it if I put them on the naughty list and all they get is a lump of coal in their Christmas stockings.

Well, I suppose they have been working hard helping me to find the right presents for you so I should cut them a bit of slack.

Don't worry if you don't get it for a week or two. We have a lot of presents to deliver and the route has been worked out very strictly by the reindeer. They might get coal too, if they don't behave.

Your Secret Santa

hey Aengus/Santa; I am really enjoying that CD! (in case you did not read the "pressie" thread, I caved in and opened my gifts).

I LOVE Breton music and also Breton traditional dancing. I think it would be great to have a group nearby that knows some of this, but it's mostly Scottish, Irish and English here (I guess we're lucky to have that!) I know there is a folk dance group in/near Glastonbury, UK that does some Breton stuff. I was in an a cappella   group two years ago that sang stuff in various Celtic languages; we did only one gig but we did sing a Breton language song...about VD!

By the way, I have been unable to post anonymously on ths thread because whe I log out my cookie gets "corrupted" and I can't post. So I hope my Santee will forgive me because he/she is not receiving silly hints!

From: GUEST,For Mary in KY: The SS (aka the Thought Po

Our Thought Police Crime Control Sensing Device has detected an intention by someone in Kentucky of being naughty before Christmas in the hope that she (for it is indeed a female perp) can swindle herself a Secret Santa present.

This is an official notification that if all else fails we will send out the Super-Dooper Reindeer Troopers with sirens wailing and lights flashing to intercept Santa's sleigh and retrieve said present, and confiscate it, as well as seizing all the other presents in the sleigh because they will be considered as contraband until proven otherwise.

Mary in KY, this is your last chance. Confess that you really don't want to deprive all of the other nice people of their presents just because of a fleeting whim to go out and have some naughty fun.

We know you don't want to deprive the other children (and grown-up children) of their Christmas cheer because we can read your thoughts (and we know that you are really a nice person - well most of the time, well, except when you ..... sorry, confidential information, cannot include that in a public warning notice.....

This is another public service announcement from
The Thought Police

P.S. We have your Secret Santa and we are force feeding him/her cookies and brandy until he/she confesses where the present is stowed on the sleigh. (How do you think Santa gets to fill out that big Santa suit so well? We do this every year and he/she is now hooked on cookies and brandy, and the suit has to be made bigger with each passing year to accommodate that big belly. That's why he/she ho-ho-ho's all the time. He/she is blind drunk from all that brandy. Then we get to catch him/her driving under the influence. It's a vicious cycle, a dirty job, but someone's got to do it.)

Yes, Helen, I totally agree. Having read Mary's hints and also read a number of her postings I realised that she seems to put great value on thinking clearly, and helping others to be more logical and clear in their thinking.

And I wouldn't worry about those Thought Police if I were you, Mary, because I'm a wiz at speed-flying and quick aerial manoeuvres to escape them. The reindeer have a few nifty evasive tricks as well.

Sorry this has taken so long, but I had to go down to the beach and round up those reindeer. They were having a great old time, let me tell you, riding the waves and sunbaking on the sand. I had a hard time of it getting them to leave. I had to buy them all icecreams before they would consider putting on the harness and getting airborne.

Nevertheless, they are now on their way, and hopefully you will have your prezzie before Xmas. I, on the other hand, will be going away camping on the 22nd, so if it hasn't arrived by then, I will have to wait a couple of weeks to find out when/if you got it. Hope you like it!

Hmmm...were I male, shouldn't this be "Santus"? After all, the "-a" ending usually denotes the feminine: puella, puta, mesa, and so on. And, in Latin, the "-us" ending denotes the masculine: gladius, Romulus, and like that. So what about the "-um" ending, like in "tectum" or "vomitorium"? Oh wait, that's neuter.

And speaking of linguistics, the first of Burke's presents should be going out today or at least very, very soon. (Hints: it's not ticking and probably won't explode if dropped. Probably.)

Well, Harpy, your pressie is now in the clutches hands of the US Postal Service. After all, if one of their representatives can win the Tour de France, they surely should be able to find Georgia...or is it Alabama...Mississippi?...anyway, one of those places where they talk funny.

There isn't a "Do Not Open Until Christmas" sign on it. After all, there are people who either (1) celebrate a different holiday (2) celebrate all possible holidays or (3) have no will power. So, you go ahead and open it whenever you want. After all, considering who has it, it might be a Valentine's Day pressie!

Good news! Everything in my life finally got organized enough to send the pressie your way. Considering the amount of postage required, I figure it just might make it by Christmas. I sure hope so. I sent it out on Monday and North Pole Mail says it'll take about 6 or so days.

I hope you like it. Frankly, I wrapped it so long ago, I kinda forgot what you're getting. Can't check the database right now either - that's located in Sri Lanka and have to check it through the Net. I just got back online today and there's a sleigh-load of elfs up here waiting to check their email and catch up with their porn site traffic (that's one way we track naughty people - or at least that's their excuse).

Gotta go - Blitzen want's to check out the other B.S. treads.

Subject: RE: BS: Secret Santa Goofy Hints 2003

Thanks, Secret Santa!

If it really does take 6 days then it would be here before Christmas, but I reckon it's the post office people who are being naughty. Sitting around looking up those porn sites and not getting their work done. I think the elves are very up-to-date, thinking of that clever way to monitor naughtiness. Maybe too clever for their own good, if they also show up on the naughtiness database.

So, I'll be happy whenever this excitingly mysterious parcel arrives. It makes it easier for me not to have to fight temptation to open it as soon as it arrives. If it came too long before Christmas, I would have to open it. This way, I can control my temptation if it gets here before Christmas, and I can open it straight away if it doesn't.

I can resist anything except temptation!

From: GUEST,Peigín's Secretive Yule-Person

Dear Peg,

I'm so pleased you received the last parcel and enjoyed the contents...I remembered you liking Scandinavian music from a thread a year or two ago. Perhaps the postmark was not so helpful after all.

So this is a person with a good memory...

As these were just a couple of little things, a supplementary package is now winging its way across an expanse that you have correctly identified as the Atlantic. I wonder if the postmark on that will help? Probably not! I hope you like what's inside (I think you will) but apologise in advance if you have it already. If you do, as promised before, I will replace it with something else. The contents are from someone closer to my origins but not to where I live now!

I enjoyed your review of LOTR ROTK and no, there weren't too many spoilers! I tend to think of myself as a bit of an Aragorn but look more like Gandalf! Well, not so much since I shaved my beard off...

Hmmm! Another LOTR fan!

Celtic/Sicilian sounds an interesting mix! I am "Celtic" too plus a little Spanish and, indeed, have performed a few times at the local Galician Centre.

Must be a clue there!

I've been to the States quite a few times and would say Boston is my favourite US city. I did spend a short time at Harvard and enjoyed it very much.

Well, all the best for now and I wish you the very happy Yuletide and sucessful and rewarding New Year.

Aengus Og Your Secretive and sometimes maroon-clad Yuleperson!
