Dover has republished Child

This is probably old hat to the regulars, but Dover has republished Child's in 5 volumes for $100.I wish to hell that I had sold my mint set for $400 when there was a market for it. That is typical of my investment experience (sigh).I received the info in a new Dover catalog.

Gee, I guess I'm glad I paid only $100 for my Dover edition of Child. It's wonderful that Dover has published Child and all sorts of other music at reasonable prices. However, I think I'll wait for the edition coming from Loomis House Press. I have the first two volumes, and they're wonderful.
Besides, Loomis House owner Mark Heiman does the Mac and Windows programming for the Digital Tradition, so I think I owe him something.

Dover, in trying to jump on a bandwagon not of their making, has probably missed it; serve them right, frankly. If they had reprinted ten years ago, we could all have avoided the bizarre prices charged in recent years by greedy dealers. I allow myself a certain satisfaction here, having got my (1965) Dover set for less than they are charging for the new impression; but not everyone has been that lucky, or dealt with people as honest as I was able to.

I agree entirely with Joe. Go for the Loomis House set, which is far better value; but buy now. We need to be sure that they make enough of a return on the first two volumes to publish the rest.

Wish i could've done Loomis house, but found the 1965 Dover for 50$, which fit my slim budget.

well, hmmmppff!! I bought my Dover set in 1978 at standard rates, so I stayed out of the madness that went on. I agree that Dover should have helped avoid this silliness...but I suppose they'll still sell a few because they're Dover, and have access to outlets...

I just checked the price on my old Dover set. It was $6 per volume. I recently [about 10 years ago] got the "English and Scottish Ballads" for $10 per volume.

My copy was $2.75 per volume. It was 1970.

EBarnacle, was that $10/volume a new-book price for Dover? The cover price on my Dover books is $6 each (I paid $100 for the set in 2000). It says the edition was published in 1965, but I can't figure out the printing date.

Masato

Your copies must have "fallen off the back of a truck" as we say in NY. I paid $7.50 per volume in 1965, when published by Dover. If this is "can you top this" I paid $12 for the 7 volume set published in 1873 (?) in Boston in the "English Poets" series..."Ballads". If I don't disremember, Joe also has a set of these raries.

I also am supporting Loomis in their efforts by buying the volumes as they appear.

Larry
No, Joe does not have that set, and he's damn jealous!!! [grin]

Larry -
I doubt if masato's copies 'fell off the bcak of a truck'! My set, purchased by mail order from Dover in the 60s, cost me $2.75 each - and that's the price printed on the front cover.

Fox - You got ripped off. I bought my Dover set in 1965 for $2.75 per volume. I got $15 for my birthday and decided that was what I wanted.

The Loomis set is lovely - he folded the appendices (later discovered version of the songs) into the main body of the book and added tunes in print at the time. The REALLY interesting set will be the digital one from Kleiman. I saw a prototype. It will be commercially available "real soon now".

So I plan on having all three sets - Dover, Loomis, and digital.

I paid $A7.95 for each volume of the 1965 paperback edition. The price in US dollars indicated on an advert in the inside back cover varies from $4, $4.50 and $5 - no mention of $2.75.

I got the 1965 paperback set for UK£4.75 in, oh, must have been around 1977. Underneath the stick-on UK price tag is printed "$7.50 in U.S.A.", i.e. US$37.50 for all 5 volumes, as paid by Bill D in 1978 (above). That gives a then exchange rate of UK£1 = US$1.58. Sounds about right.

I need to redo the sums but it seems to cost $75 for PAPER "Dover" Vols 1&2 delivered to UK and $80 for CLOTH Loomis House again delivered to UK. Seems good value for extra $5.

G'day all,

Hooray! ... They have the volumes available separately - so I can finally get volume 5 to complete my inherited 'broken set'.

Once I have the index, I might get to use it more often ( ... or easily).

Regards,

Bob

I offer a word of both good and bad news in such matters as waiting for the LH edition. These can take years. Bronson in four volumes started in 1958 and finished in 1972 (!!) So it can take a while....

The good news is (using that as an example) the last volume was not published in such great numbers as the first. This means complete sets - as anyone who has tried to buy a set of original Bronsons will tell you - are not normally come across in the average S/H bookshop.

I reckon at the current rate of progress the LH edition of Child will take ten years. Now if they get taken over/go bankrupt/change of heart/any other reason/to not complete the set......

So be very patient and best not to hold your breath.

Still I feel quite fit and should manage up to Volume 4 at least.:0)
