(Written by Sue Dewsbury) During WW2, Roses made gun turrets for Lancaster bombers instead of machinery for wrapping chocolates. The wife of the owner of the company used to give tea parties for both visiting dignitaries and the servicemen stationed in the area. She asked all of her visitors to sign her tablecloth, and she embroidered them for posterity. This song tells the story of one local airman who missed out on her hospitality, but made it to the tablecloth in the end. Sixty years after the Dambuster raid, the cloth is on display at the Gainsborough and District Heritage Association. In the early 1940's when the war was at its height The factories in Gainsborough made munitions for the fight Aerodromes were all around, Hemswell, Scampton too Full of all the young men in their uniforms of blue Mrs Gertrude Rose was like the mum they'd left behind She fed them tea and sandwiches and let their nerves unwind Then they went back to their squadrons to fight the German foe Then she stitched their names onto her cloth - a talisman of woe Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war Bomber Harris was a tea-time guest in 1943 He'd watched the new gun turrets made in the factory Guy Gibson and the other lads from 617 came With their Lancasters and bouncing bombs as dambusters found fame Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war Flying Officer Johnny Johnson didn't go there for his tea His mother lived in Gainsborough so it was her he went to see He aimed the bomb from N for nut which breached the Eder dam Celebration in the plane then Gibson's order "Head for home" Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war When Johnny came back to Gainsborough in 1995 He saw the tablecloth with all the names - few still left alive He took a pen and signed the cloth a tear drop in his eye Remembrance of comrades true - so many had to die Woven threads of linen and stitches neat and small Tell the stories of the young men who went away to war |

A well-deserved win. Very evocative lyrics for me, as both me grandad and me old dad were amongst those who worked for Rose Bros., building the packaging machines and then, during WW2, the Lancaster gun turrets. One thing I don't understand - how come '16 Miles To Every Acre' (Sooz's entry last year) didn't get into the first three in the previous competition? It was every bit as good as 'Woven Threads of Linen'. If any of the judges are out there, can you (dare you) enlighten me? Johnny |

Second place last year with my song performed by Jane Kitchen...This year there appear to be a lot of people entering who did not enter last year so competition must be strong. I would urge anyone with any writing ability and an 'ear' for a tune of your own making to enter. If I can do it with no previous experience I am sure many others can. This year my song will be sung by Rosie Jackson (Myrtle) with me doing the harmony and Phil Brougham (The Fence) playing guitar. Recording it tonight with the Sooz family...be nice to see the dog again as not seen for almost a year. Best wishes and good luck to all who enter this year. Mike |

We (the Wild Wolds Women) entered it into the self-same competition a few years back. Unfortunately we didn't get through to the finals althought we did sing it on the telly which was exciting. I seem to think we sang it live on the (Lincolnshire) Wolds, complete with accordion, cello and guitar or did we just mime, hmmm memory failing, now...I remember it was a bit windy so singing with long hair is a bit of a giggle. The competition entry was recorded on a tatty old cassette player, if I remember correctly...blooming heck, it is not that long ago but I feel ancient! Lincolnshire isn't all Flat is still available on our Wild Wolds Women first cd (shameless plug!) pm me for details! :-) I love hilly Lincolnshire it is Beeeeeautiful! |

For those of us who never entered a competition before,can someone tell me if you get any feed back from the judges ? I mean other than if you get through to the final stages. I just like to get peoples opinions on what I write,I dont always take any advice given but constructive critisism is a great thing I have found. Any how good luck to all who are entering and can someone let me know about the final as would like to go along for a listen. I thought maybe it was ticket only or only enough seating for freinds and family you know that sort of thing. If iot isn it would be really cool to go hear you all and see how 'tis done. |

It used to be the courthouse and it still has cells although they are now used as dressing rooms. Most years you only get a seat if you buy a ticket (or if you are a judge) as the finals concert is very popular. Competitors generally find perches on old bits of scenery back stage or in the bar. The most valid feedback is from the audience (not the judges) they join in and clap a lot if they like your song! Four minutes is long enough for me SJ - my memory span can't cope with any more! |

But When I listen to the rubbish song I wrote last year, I am pleased they shut me up after four minutes or so. They should have had a gong and when I got to the end of the first verse shouted - okay, that's enough - bugger off fatso! This year i've done better though, so I think, though I do tend to get hypnotised by my own creations. Its like some people enjoy the smell of their own farts. |

I really love Lincolnshire - its my home county, but I'm not blind to its faults and I've taken too many other people there - not to know the effect it has on some people. Its not everyone's cup of tea, but as I've got older - I've found increasing pleasure in driving through the big skies around Boston, sorting through the tat at Grantham market, watching the bowls matches at Skeg, the simple pleasures of the alcopops gangs as they throw bags of chips around and queue up for the nightclub opening in Cleethorpes, Market rasen folk club, and the harmless yokel who runs it.... the list is endless. It reminds me a bit of the story Alan Bennet tels about meeting Betjeman at a lecture on The Joys of Reading - and finding John B very disappointed that it was about the delights of literature - rather than that town in Berkshire. The Joys of Reading ....now that would be a challenge! the serendipity of Slough.....! Lincolnshire's better than those places. |

These are the bands like the Houghton Weavers, Fivepenny Piece, Oldham Tinkers and Gary and Vera Aspey who specialise in doing "Lancashire Evenings" where you know two things: 1. That at some point during the evening you'll be served a Hot Pot Supper with pickled red cabbage, and 2. You will have a whole evening of contempory songs that are obliged to be as full of Northern cliches as possible - clogs, flat 'at, pit, mill, poor, shawl, tin bath etc etc - usually delivered in the "when I wuz a lad" mode. Thankfully very little of this makes it into the actual folk clubs, more or less resticting itself to special nights at the local town hall, social clubs and the like. Thank goodness that in people like John Connoly, Dave Evardson and Co, Lincolnshire has songwriters who can write songs about past times with a bit more subtlety! And they're letting me back in this weekend - back to Lincolnshire tonight! |

I think because it wasn't really an industrial economy - that sort Gracie Field/sing as we go/ we're all in it together ethic that you get in Northern and Cockney music isn't really there. I don't know if you followed the Celtic Music/English music debate. My reaction was of course English music is celtic in origin - all our place names are viking in origin, the same sort of roots that Irish music springs from. Somebody sagely pointed out - only on the east coast mate! If you think of the classics of Lincolnshire song - Brigg fair, Creeping Jane, I suppose sea and fishing songs, poaching songs of course - the Lincolnshire Poacher - lest we forget! Theres a clear sort of pastoral theme therein. In most of my songs I try fairly ruthlessly to to stick to talking about my suburban roots - and much joy has it brought me. However it was a life lived in Lincolnshire and as valid as the tales of poachers and farmers. Strangely enough I seem to writing on a more mainstream topic this year. Perhaps the competition is starting to influence my writing! |

I love Lincolnshire and what it means to me and my family. I wasn't brought up on a farm and I didn't have a father who was a fisherman etc etc. I do, however have just a few lovely memories of this county and sometimes they creep into my songs. If I tried to write more traditional songs, I think they would probably sound a bit contrived. (Btw weelittledrummer have you got any other cds? But if you go visit the other side of it and see the relative poverty and notice the run down and rougher areas there are a lot of better places to be. The estates where a lot of people have to live are awfull depressing dirty run down places. The people in them would be grateful for jobs that pay so badly that most of us wouldnt get out of bed for them. There are race attacks in the streets of Grimsby against people who are white! The police are indifferent to calls for assitance around here unless you are well off or capable of getting your story in the local press. In lincoln there are areas just as bad if not worse. I dont know about Gainsbro The people with money move out to the villages,and live seperately from the majority of the population. There is nothing of any me ning for the kids in these places to do. the schools system is only there to train them to work in factories or whatever industry currently needs fresh fodder to exploit. There is nothing in the area to give anyone any pride in being born here. This area has been a s**t hole since the Bitch Thatcher got her claws on the country and taught her mantra of greed is good and screw every one else to the country. LOL discuss. |

I don't think the stuff you are talking about is the result of Thatcherism. Much as I would like her to be blamed for everything. The sort of class of petit bougeoisie that Thatcher sprung from had its equivalent in every Lincolnshire town - a freemasonry in every sense that kept Lincolnshire a backwater - culturally and economically. That way they were the big fishes in the pond. I warn you though Tim - you have a discovery yet to make. Namely Americans love America, The Irish love Ireland, Russians love Russia - and even though you may not be aware of it - Lincolnshire is deep somewhere now in your make up as a person, and you may not realise it, but you love your homeland - Heimat - call it what you will. Parts of Lincolnshire are undeniably flat - but to us lot, it is never featureless - never disinteresting. |

Compared to the industrial pollution that was the everyday lot of working people in St Helens - he saw Lincolnshire as a bright and clean environment. Before long he was off on his war service, but during the war - he married my mother and he lured her back to Lincolnshire with tales of this bright new world he had discovered on the east coast. My mother detested Lincolnshire from the very first, for nearly all the reasons you mention, Tim. She thought of it as the last outpost of the feudal system, virtually devoid of civilised values and moreover she encouraged her children to distance themselves from the place. I left Lincolnshire when I was fifteen, but came back to spend four unhappy years in Grantham - qualifying as a teacher. It came as quite a shock to me, when I started revisitiing Lincolnshire from the 1980's onwards doing gigs how deep the feelings the place stirred within me. The BS section is the non music section below. As we are songwriters discussing how we arrive at the themes for our songs - it doesn't really apply. I remember I was in Boston one time, and I picked up the newspaper - The Standard and the lead story was about the drugs problem on the streets I had grown up in, but was no longer a part of. Right then and there Tim, I YEARNED to write the sort of song you are talking about. But I could see it wasn't my song to write. However theres a certain poignancy about how they hit your area. Anyway folksongs are often about the particular, rather than the generalised problem. Think of the New deserter, which starts As I was a walking along ratcliff Highway, and tells the story from a subjective point of view. of course people have written in a general way quite successfully - Woody Guthrie's Do Re Mi, for example. Strangely enough I think it loses something without it being the statement of a lone individual. Quite recently I watched John Mellencamp's version of Do Re Mi, on a DVD commemorating Woody and there were some excellent musicians on the DVD - but to my mind - it was so obviously a song about losers rather then a song for gorgeous looking pop stars with virtuoso musicians backing them on expensive classic guitars. I think what I am struggling to say is that - context, in a way is part of the writing in our artform - context which the artist has to try to provide. |

I'm sorry you didn't make it through, as you sounded sincere in what you were saying about writing something outside the accepted folky subjects. Who knows - it might be my sort of thing. I am doing a lot more stuff from outside writers these days. In fact there are a lot of songs I would like to do - but its coming up with a distinctive accompaniment. Something edgy..... Thats what brilliant about Mudcat - you meet kindred spirits. Did you hear that version of Alex Campbell's Been on the Road So Long - by Eric Geever, who apparently was Link Wray's bassman. It really makes it worthwhile trudging through those ghastly posts about - do you think it would acceptable if I ran the 15th and the Sixteenth verses of The Ballad of Tam Linn together. I suppose I should have marked your card about song competitions - theres usually an agenda. I remember one time I went all the way to County Galway to take part in some songwriting competition / festival. Anyway there was this Father Ted lookalike on the panel - obviously hated the English. Now bear its cost me several hundred pounds to get there, he marks me nought out of ten for musical ability and my song nought out of ten. as you know Tim, i am not a nought out of ten guitarist - whatever you think about my songwriting abilities. Don't worry pal - we live in a world where people think that Liza Carthy's nose stud is challenge to the tradition. Keep on, keeping on baby. |

So I'd leave that verse out.TheBand Played Waltzing Matilda blew me away 30 years ago - ever since then , everything else on the subject has felt like a free ride on Bogle's sensibility. To be honest - even Bogles other songs on the subject. It could be about a bloke on death row in America or Thailand.A little compassion for someone living in the here and now would be a bit more convincing. check out this guy, Steve Conway http://www.btinternet.com/~unclechristo/index.html He's just a genius at adding atmosphere to Vikki's songs. Ask Monsieur Appleton about edge - I'm sure he'll understand. he's a very creative guitarist. And you can't learn that from a book of tablature. A creative guitarist doesn't necessarily have to be a great technician - the guy working with Vikki Clayton at themoment has a very original mind, but considers himself more of a keyboard player. |

I think with guys like SJ and myself, we perhaps make it look too easy - perhaps because it is easy to us after we've played for such a long time. then our accompaniments can get formulaic. I know its something only in recent years I've become aware of - for various reasons. mainly because I was under pressure as pro musician trying to cover bases. as a retired old fart, I have more time on my hands and I can see these things clearer - at I hope I can. could be just another layer of dust on my myopia! |

There are enough of you real players with an association with MRFC it is a pity you dont hold joint workshops for us less accomplished types.
