More goings-on in Shropshire

I was thinking that we could do with another start for the Shropshire thread, as well as fogie, so here it is, a continuation of this.

Thank you Trevor, well done.
I'll start by saying that this Thursday (October 16)it's the monthly session at the Grove at Walcot between Wellington and Shrewsbury, near the Sugar Beet Factory.
It's a mixed session - singing, playing, listening, drinking and eating.
It's a wise precaution not to have anything to eat beforehand.

Nice one Trev. So what's to be done about the Six Bells? Can you sort that too?

The people I spoke to thought it was OK - don't know where the story about noise when singers were singing came from. Apparently it happened once, during one singer's turn, but that was all.

Six Bells this Sunday in Bishop's Castle. The last one went well and this one needs as many to go as possible, to make this one a success too. I won't be there I'm afraid, sorry to miss it.

Trumpet blowing a little here... had a sesh in a local recording studio last night with fellow members of the band with which I am now a member(Shot Dogs); we're making a demo with which to torment clubs. On the way home I called in at The Buffalo in Clun as it was session night there. Aren't the pubs around here great? It was 11.30 and they still let me in and I got a pineapple juice. Had a really good sing too. Good to see Watson and his SO again too.

Just over the Salop / Staffs border from Eccleshall is the Anchor Inn at High Offley. It was a regular haunt of drinkers, singers & musicians. Does anyone know what, if anything, goes on there these days?

A few of the South Shropshire and Borders folk community are going to be busking in Shrewsbury next Saturday. We'll be in the Darwin Centre, on the bottom level near the Christmas tree from 10.00am until 2.00pm.

It's in aid of Medecins Sans Frontieres and last year we raised getting on for £200, so if you want to play something, sing something, join in with something or rattle a tin you will be more than welcome to come and help us beat that figure.

Cheers

Harvey,

If the weather's warm & sunny at Priestweston, there'll likely be outdoor sessions on the camping field just behind the pub.

If people do smoke-then hopefully it'll be dissipated in the fresh air.

Try to pop down- it's always a fab do.free camping & food at pub is great!

you might find this useful...

Priest Weston, Easter (and sometime in September)
Too many people in a small village pub. Session/singaround that dribbles on and on all weekend plus a small ceilidh in the village hall on the Saturday evening (usually with a "scratch band" - musicians that can't get into, or have been thrown out of, the pub). No "performers"; no "organisers"; no "audience" - but if you buy Chris a pint of mild he'll let you sing.

The Miners' Arms, Priest Weston. Free camping (on a very sloping field full of over-friendly sheep).

E-mail yorkiebartram@telco4u.net for more details. (He drinks mild by the way).

From: Yorkie

Thanks Sally, I intended to copy that info to this thread but I'd forgotten where I'd put it.

Anyone thinking of coming, please note "Too many people in a small village pub" is not joking. These weekend gatherings originally started by invitation only amongst singers and musicians associated with the Broseley Folk Club. Over the years (more than 20 years) word spread, until far too many people wanted to come and some of the original coterie stopped coming. Numbers have fluctuated a great deal in recent years but there is still, always, too many!! These weekends also led to the establishing of an excellent monthly session that offers a warm welcome to visitors but the Easter gatherings are not and can not be open to all-comers - there really isn't a lot of space. It's not that new-comers are not welcome ... but don't be offended if we tell you to sod off and find your own pub.

(Ee, I can be such a miserable sod sometimes......)

However: The ceilidh looks likely to happen this year - and that IS open to all-comers. (NB Parking is a bit limited. 4x4 recommended if you park in that field over the road!). I think Taffy and Co will be playing but I don't know for certain. It is also likely that Dave Hunt will be joining us again after a bit of a break (he has had other things to do every Easter for several years). It'll be just like the good old days - Baby Bumblebee anyone?

Chris

Cheers Sal for posting it across, Hear it went ok. Had bad cold so didnt go.

Was up in Broseley tonite at the Forresters Arms. We tend to have a natter and a sing around. Ann & Dave, Pat from Cuckoo Oak & his sisters Lyn & Rowan. Nice close harmony.

Thinking of only making Forresters one Tuesday a month, probably 2nd. Perhaps we'd get a bit more support. Anyone like to come and do a guest spot? Ann Lennox-Martin launched her CD in the summer.

Hear there is a new Folk eve in Bridgnorth at the Black Boy on the Cartway. Think they said 1st tues of month. Dont know whos running it.

We are at The Unicorn Lower Corfe St, 3rd Friday of month. Jon Heywood, Pat Simons, various other regulars. Nice venue and good welcome. Mix of music & singing, mainly Irish, but a bit of rock n roll creeps in later on. Parking is on street.

Boat as usual Thursday evenings. Also we have a practice session at the Birchmeadow Centre, Broseley on Sunday mornings for anyone interested in brusing up their instrument skills in Irish music. 10-12.30.

Had a revamp of my website. COuldnt resist the twirly bit. If anyone wants to add any info do let me know.

Hi Fliss,

I lived in Shrewsbury most of my life - My parents moved to Annscroft about 4 years ago. I'm looking forward to meeting you and some more Shropshire folkies. I don't know many because I live in Hull (I know Dáithí from a fab session in Barrow upon Humber). All I've sampled of Shropshire folk so far is a wonderful weekend at Priest Weston and a merry evening in the Loggerheads.

Best wishes,

Hi Richard

Which Loggerheads? The one opposite the Prince Rupert in Shrewsbury? Hear they had a new sign painted and put a Loggerhead turtle on it as they didnt know what the Loggerhead stood for!!!!!! It stands for the Shrewsbury coat of arms with the 3 loggerheads on it (lion type heads). The pub is properly called the Shrewsbury Arms.
Ah well.

Had a natter to Fran today. Sounds like the Irish speaking weekend is going to be good. But I may not manage to come along.

There's a story telling and poetry extravaganza in The 3 Tuns on Friday 10th June being hosted by Teri and Mike Greene of The Winged Word. we have provisionally booked both Sally Tonge and Brian Carrington (Daylevel) who together perform a complement of story and song of local myths and legend. They will provide entertainment for all the family, encouraging audience participation

To complete the evening we are engaging other local storytellers for shorter performances in order to enhance diversity. The evening promises to be both entertaining and good value for money.

For years the Three Tuns was the only reason I ever went to Bishops Castle. In the Dark ays it was one of, I think, only 3pubs in the country which brewed its own beer, and fine beer it is too.

Now of course BC has two pubs which brew their own excellent beer and Big Nev's ( The Six Bells) is even better than the Tuns.

There is also the lovely Ms Lemon and her folk fes to draw you to this lovely little place and the Michlemas fayre in the Autumn

I'm hoping to start a proper folk club here in BC, Shropshire. Few floor singers( draw, rustling crisp packets, eyes closed and finger in the ear jobbie!!) and local artists (if we can collect enough money!)We have a lot of really good performers in this neck of the woods and we don't have a platform for them.

Don't know what night of the month yet,or where, but am open to ideas.

Now THAT sounds like a good idea. Six Bells or Three Tuns? Perhaps both? The Tuns has the big room.... Put me down for a spot! Weekends preferably, since I'm 90 miles away!

And while I'm here, did you know that the Mersey River and Shanty festivals, which normally clash with your fine do in June, will not be happening next year? Apparently (I have this from Clive who got it direct from Jack Coutts) they're redeveloping the Albert Dock area (again??!!!!) in preparation for 2008.
So we can (a) have more people in BC and (b) run our own Mersey Shanty Festival. Perhaps someone should dig the Mersey and Shropshire Canal?

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but thought that you might be interested to know that New Scorpion Band have a couple of Shropshire rural gigs coming up, just before Christmas - they are:

Wednesday 21st December       Chetton Village Hall, Bridgnorth 7.30pm, Tel. 01746 789208 / 789257

Thursday 22nd December       Chapel Lawn Village Hall, Bucknell 7.30pm, Tel. 01547 530504

They will be doing a fabulous programme of midwinter and Christmas music from the last 500 years, interspersed with some brilliantly evocative seasonal readings - to make you laugh and, perhaps, cry! And they perform completely acoustically, with a full range of brass, woodwind, strings, free reed and percussion instruments (and voices).

Hi weelittledrummer ... go to bbc shropshire radio folk diary or tonight The Miners Arms in Priest Weston, it's usually 1st Wed of the month. There's a session at the riverside in Aymestry, (between Wigmore and Leominster) Herefordshire tomorrow night. On Friday night at the Unicorn in Ludlow. That's a really good one. I know it's a long way for you.

Try Genivieve Tudors diary at the beeb.
