02 Sep 98 - 09:14 PM (#36841) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: Bill D If I were there, harpgirl, I would probably sing songs ABOUT storms! Daring it, as it were...if this does not work for you, maybe some of the gospel songs that sound so good on the harp...In 1947, my family was chased out of New Orleans by a hurricane...so we moved to Kansas, where ther are tornados! *smile*....If you have power there, and want to talk, or compare notes, I know a couple of caht places to meet....(if you DONT have power, why am I writing this?? *grin* maybe some humor would help...) |

02 Sep 98 - 09:53 PM (#36846) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: Barbara That's Bob Franke'Ssong. John McC covers it nicely, and it immediately came to my mind too. Or maybe Tom Paxton's song where the verses talk about various natural disasters, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, fires, and the chorus goes:
In ten years there's gonna be 1 million lawyers, |

02 Sep 98 - 10:41 PM (#36852) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: rich r Thanks for the correction Barbara. That's what I get for not looking it up. I knew it was in McCutcheon's "Water From Another Time" songbook, so I just glibly assumed it was his. Songwriters just don't put other folks songs in their own songbooks. Well, JOhn did and he has a few others in there that aren't his either. Harpgirl, HOw bad can something be with the name "Earl"? Maybe you could taunt it and go for something like "Mighty Day" about the big Galvaston hurricane early this (and soon to be last) century.

02 Sep 98 - 11:29 PM (#36856) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: Jenny Well ... I can empathize with harpgirl, since I, too, am sittin' here listening to the rain and wind from "Earl!" Not to sound sexist, but hurricanes seem to have lost their class when they started using "boy's" name and "Earl" is a prime example. Frankly, I'm waiting for "Hurricane Bubba." "Four Strong Winds" is my favorite all-time "sittin' out a storm" song. Jenny |

02 Sep 98 - 11:48 PM (#36857) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: harpgirl Well, sleep seems to have dulled my anxiety somewhat and Ole Earl has lost some of it's intensity. Since the whole town is about shut down maybe I should sing Hallelujah I'm a bum! We haven't lost our power yet and I'll prey the fourteen 30feet plus live oaks in my front yard don't "drop a limb on the head of him that anyway trusts the shade!" thanks for the humor y'all (hang in there Jenny, anything that shuts down corporate America can't be all bad now can it!) harpgirl |

03 Sep 98 - 12:08 AM (#36861) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: Dave T I like the idea of singing about the storms. I'm up in Canada just south of Ottawa, so we don't get many hurricanes here. We did have quite an ice storm last winter where we were without electricity for up to 3-4 weeks in places. Anyway, how about "Galveston Flood" (is this the same as "Mighty Day" rich?) or Guy Clark's "Blowin' Like A Bandit". Hope Earl passes you by harpgirl. |

It struck the first of April and as it's goin' hence,
It took the wife, it took the kids, the cows and horses too,
And that is why I'm punchin' on the Kansas plains today, Art |

04 Sep 98 - 12:10 AM (#37010) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: Charlie Baum One of the first times I ever heard Bob Franke's "Hallelujah, The Great Storm Is Over" was one evening in New Haven, Connecticut. Hurricane Frederick had just blown through town, knocking out power (though not to my immediate neighborhood), throwing down tree limbs, and leaving the town looking as though--well as though a hurricane had just struck. That evening I went wandering around my neighborhood (Whitney-Orange, for those who know New Haven), where there are many old fine Victorian houses with large porches. And on one of them, people were singing, and one of them had a guitar and sang the Bob Franke song. And I had a chance to meet a whole new group of folk singers I had never known about in my neighborhood, all thanks to a hurricane. May Earl bring you such good fortune. --Charlie Baum |

04 Sep 98 - 05:58 PM (#37102) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: harpgirl I"mmmmmmm baaaaack!!!! Actually, the storm was pretty tame around my neighborhood. A few trees knocked out power and wells, of course. The coastline was a bit worse. The main highway 98 is washed away for a good many miles, lots of flooding of homes in the area and some damage. Only two fisherman lost their lives.... though. Opal was way way scarrier! Kate did more damage here in 1985 in Tallahassee. We were so lucky... If you all have ever heard the song "Andrew of 92", I'm so glad we didn't have one like that! Thanks for the reassurance and diversion. I admit I was scared... Having been in some mighty rough storms sailing on Lake Huron in the 60's with my family, I have a healthy respect for wind and water! I loved the songs! a slightly soggy harpgirl |

04 Sep 98 - 11:32 PM (#37126) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: Jenny harpgirl ... sorry I didn't get to the Rose and Thorn Thursday and I'm going to Jax this weekend ... will you be anywhere this coming week. It was rather comforting knowing you were in the same vicinity during Earl ... I stayed up and awake until 4 am and the tornado watch was over ... my fear was being upstairs in bed with my roof blowing off ... When I lived on the Atlantic and the Bahamas, my family and I survived much, much worse hurricanes ... this one was tame, comparedly, thank goodness ... jenny |

05 Sep 98 - 02:41 PM (#37167) Subject: RE: Hurricane Earl? From: harpgirl Hi Jenny, Glad you were okay. We have such intense storm coverage nowadays that it stirs up some anxiety! I've had one fright sailing to Walker Cay. Where in the Bahamas did you live? We like Man o'War, cuz the Albury's are great friends of my folks... We were so happy to be okay, DoneyGals barged in on Road to Ruine 's last set at Rose and Thorn, Thursday night. Sunday 13th at Black Dog Cafe we play at 1:PM and probably more tom-foolery at Rose and Thorn on Thursdays. Sorry you will miss tonight's Irish Night. Eddy Keeney, a retired Irish fiddler living in Tampa will grace us with his presence tonight. Rich, If a white squall is what I think it is, I've been in several on the Great Lakes! But I bet Art would be cool in one of those, as well! Mmmm, those riverboat captains! harpgirl |
