I've just heard the weather forecast for the next week, it looks like it's going to cold, wet, windy, possibly with snow on northern hills. I wonder if I can squeeze my hot water bottle into my rucsac....perhaps if I dehydrate the water? Sooz: have a lovely time in the Lakes, it surely is one of the most (if not THE most) beautiful areas in England, super for walking, drinking, eating, singing, drinking (I like to drink). I've just heard that the Farmer's Arms at Portinscale is closing for transformation into a restaurant. :-( John |

From: Big Tim You don't have to be that fit just to do it but you have to be fit to do it fast, like the marathon: there's a big difference between 5 hours and 2:04:56, the recently set men's world best, or 2:15:25 - the women's best. This will slow all competitors down, not only because running on snow covered rough ground is not easy, but navigation becomes more tricky and because of all the extra camping gear need to be carried. When I think of hill running I always think of Ron Hill leading the Three Peaks, then getting lost in the mist and ending up about 5th. He also led the Ben Nevis but fell on the descent, came home covered in blood, way down the field: and on the road and track Ron was a world record holder, a European and Commonwealth champion, but he never won the Three Peaks or the Ben Nevis (if memory serves). |
