The Fatal Wedding By Chad Morgan

The groom stood waiting for his bride
The best man shiverin' by his side
On him the smell of stale sheep dip
And a flask of brandy on his hip.

He knew he'd trod that last long mile
As his dear walked slowly down the isle
This was the day he was waiting for
When he'd get in for his cut and more

Of her old man's station and his gold
As soon as wedding bells had tolled
Fortune sure had smiled his way
This was indeed his lucky day.

But the bride she died at the altar
The bridegroom died next day
The parson dropped dead in the churchyard
As he knelt down to pray.

The hearse capsized at the crossroads
It couldn't make the turn
And the people stood and cheered like mad
As they watched the old church burn.

And then the heavens opened
And the rain began to fall
And the whole flamin' town got washed away
And there was no one left at all.

Sorry Joe. I wrote it out from memory. I've known since from about the 1970s. I'll try to get more info. Google was not co-operating for some reason so I couldn't try there. Chad Morgan recorded it so I should be able to get more about it. I'll be back. Joy

G'day Joe and Joybell,

By my recollection, this has been around since at least as far back as the late '50s ... Chad Morgan (The Sheik of Scrubby Creek) has been a pretty durable performer on the Australian scene, with his good-natured parodies of the country music scene (or himself .. ?). I'll have a look at some specific sites for Australian recorded lyrics and see if I can fix that date.

Regards,

Bob

G'day again,

I didn't find a date, but the track was in a release of Chad morgan's 78 rpm material ... from 1952 onwards.

Maree's Album Lyrics site gives no date - and this is her entry:

THE FATAL WEDDING

By CHAD MORGAN

Album: THE BEST OF CHAD MORGAN

The groom stood there waiting for his bride
The best man shiverin' by his side
On him the smell of stale sheep dip
And a flask of brandy on his hip

He knew he'd trod that last long mile
As his dear walked slowly down the isle
This was the day he was waiting for
When he'd get in for his cut and more

Of her old man's station and his gold
As soon as wedding bells had tolled
The fortune sure had smiled his way
This was indeed his lucky day

But the bride, she died at the alter
The bridegroom died next day
The parson dropped dead in the churchyard
As he was about to pray

The hearse capsized at the crossroads
It couldn't make the turn
And the people stood and cheered like mad
As they watched the old church burn

And then the heavens broke open
And the rain it started to fall
And the whole flamin' town got washed away
And there was no one le-eft at all...

... Only a couple of words different, so Joybell's memory was pretty good!

Bob Bolton

Thanks Bob. None of my books about release dates even mentioned Chad Morgan and Google was down. I memorized it from a live performance, long ago, so a few words were bound to be a bit different. I wish my memory was as good about where I put the coffee I was just drinking or my glasses. At least my teeth are still firmly attached!
                                                   Regards back Joy

The DT has a song called THE FATAL WEDDING which might be the original of which Chad Morgan's song is a parody.

The one in DT was recorded by Bradley Kincaid and by Grandpa Jones.

The Lester S. Levy Collection has the sheet music. Lyrics are nearly identical to the ones in DT. I have marked the differences in boldface.
THE WHOREHOUSE BELLS WERE RINGING is another parody of this popular song.

THE FATAL WEDDING
(Words, W. H Windom. Music, Gussie L. Davis. Copyright 1893.)

The wedding bells were ringing on a moonlight winter's night.
The church was decorated. All within was gay and bright.
A mother with her baby came and saw the lights aglow.
She thought of how those same bells chimed for her three years ago.
"I'd like to be admitted, sir," she told the sexton old.
"Just for the sake of baby to protect him from the cold."
He told her that the wedding there was for the rich and grand,
And with the eager watching crowd outside she'd have to stand.

CHORUS:
While the wedding bells were ringing, while the bride and groom were there,
Marching up the aisle together while the organ pealed an air;
And tales of fond affection, vowing never more to part,
Just another fatal wedding, just another broken heart.

She begged the sexton once again to let her pass inside.
"For baby's sake you may step in," the gray-haired man replied.
"If anyone knows reason why this couple should not wed,
Speak now, or hold your peace forever," soon the preacher said.
"I must object," the woman cried, with voice so meek and mild.
"The bridegroom is my husband, sir, and this our little child."
"What proof have you?" the preacher asked. "My infant," she replied.
She raised her babe, then knelt to pray. The little one had died.

The parents of the bride then took the outcast by the arm.
"We'll care for you through life," they said. "You've saved our child from harm."
The outcast wife, the bride, and parents quickly drove away.
The husband died by his own hand before the break of day.
No wedding feast was spread that night. Two graves were made next day:
One for the little baby, and in one the father lay.
The story has been often told, by firesides warm and bright,
Of bride and groom, of outcast, and that fatal wedding night.

My hunch is that the Chad Morgan song doesn't seem like a parody, although he may have pinched the title. The only thing they have in common is that several people in the wedding party die - and not the same ones.
By the way anyone singing the Gussie Davis "Fatal Wedding" might like to try it to the tune used for "The Wreck of the FFV" It works better.

Hi
Re: The Fatal Wedding (recorded by Chad Morgan)
The song was written by Chad Morgan & fellow artist the late Gordon Parsons while on tour. Chad recorded 'The Fatal Wedding' for EMI Music, in 1958. Morgan wrote the first half of the song, and Parsons the last half. Another wedding song - that Morgan had written and recorded in 1955, was 'The Shotgun Wedding'. Also Country Comedian the late John Ashe wrote 'The Bobba Wobba Wedding' and Chad Morgan recorded that song as well during the late 1960's.

SHOT-GUN WEDDING (Chad Morgan, 1955)
Now I've been chasing sheilas
For more than half my life
Seldom have I had one
Who's thought to be my wife
But I met a little sheila
Out on the Queensland planes
She said don't you try and leave me
Like your other burnt out flames
She said 'don't you try and leave me
She said 'don't you try to run
Cos my old man's right behind you
And he's got a loaded gun
There is going to be a wedding
Whether you agree or not
And if you try to get away
My darling you'll get shot
They made preparations for the wedding to begin
Sent out the invitations
To call the people in
Then they marched to the church
An old drongo strummed along
Her old man walked behind me
And he sang this little song
Here comes the bride, the Sheik by her side
Feeling very sorry for himself
He tried to run, but I stopped him with my gun
He's gonna marry her or else
I said 'listen you old geezer
You've made a big mistake
Your daughter for a wife
I will never take
There's a window right be hind me
And through it I shall fly
Just before I leave you
I'll say goodbye
Then I started running
And I jumped across the room
I felt something hit me
I heard an awful BOOM!!!
Now my friends I'm far away
I stood beneath a tree
Picking out the buckshot
That old coot fired into me

Chad Morgan, best known in Australia as 'The Sheik of Scrubby Creek, has been writing and recording comical songs since 1952. At the age of 75 he still performing to fans across Australia.

Only difference I can hear between the two prevous posts and the recording is :-

As his dear walked slowly down the isle should be

As his DOOM walked slowly down the aisle

Great song I have been meaning to include for years but never got round to it.

& here was me thinking Chad Morgan wrote this song - thanks to JohnInKansas's new thread
When Does it Get to Be Folk? I went looking for the lyrics of George J. Gaskin's 1983 hit The Fatal Wedding

and found this Step into my time machine week 89

George J. Gaskin. Born in 1863, he became so popular in the close of the 19th century, he was known as "the Silver Voice Irish Tenor" (how's that for a catchy nickname?) Among the #1s he had this week were Slide Kelly Slide in 1892; The Fatal Wedding in 1894; The Sunshine Of Paradise Alley in 1896; On The Banks Of The Wabash in 1898; and My Old New Hampshire Home in 1899. He was the second act (by one day) to record commercially for Edison- the first being former slave George W. Johnson.

The Fatal Wedding. Whatever you're expecting, you're wrong:

The groom stood there waiting for his bride
The best man shiverin' by his side
On him the smell of stale sheep dip
And a flask of brandy on his hip
He knew he'd trod that last long mile
As his dear walked slowly down the isle
This was the day he was waiting for
When he'd get in for his cut and more
Of her old man's station and his gold
As soon as wedding bells had tolled
The fortune sure had smiled his way
This was indeed his lucky day
But the bride, she died at the alter
The bridegroom died next day
The parson dropped dead in the churchyard
As he was about to pray
The hearse capsized at the crossroads
It couldn't make the turn
And the people stood and cheered like mad
As they watched the old church burn
And then the heavens broke open
And the rain it started to fall
And the whole flamin' town got washed away
And there was no one le-eft at all...

=======

'Of her old man's station and his gold'

interesting point, tho - in Australia a 'station' is a big rural property (ranch) so it has always seemed a local song.

There is nothing in the Merriam-Webster definition of 'station' that fits this line.
