I used to love the theme tune "Ba dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum-ba dum-bum ba-da dum, BOING!!" I'm pretty sure it was Helen Spiers, rather than Spears. Whichever, I think she looked a bit like Su Ingle, who used to present a wildlife programme with Terry Nutkins (this was before The Really Wild Show)or possibly Derek Griffiths. Jonathan Cohen used to do music for all kinds of children's progs back then - I think he composed the music for the last series of Playschool (before they replaced it with the diabolical Playbus). As to what he might be doing now, Gawd only knows. I doubt he's a mudcatter, so we'll probably never know. |

I'm sure he shaped the musical beginnings of a couple of generations of Brits. Playschool and Playaway were so much more enthralling than the mind numbing Playbus (but where does it gur?) because unlike most modern childrens' TV, they didn't speak down to the children. Limpit got far more enjoyment from my Clangers and Herbs videos than she ever did from Tweenies or Rosie and Jim. The exception was the Teletubbies but we're all allowed one weak moment. She decided very early on that Playbus was just too tedious. The Clangers spoke her language and the Herbs did more or less what the character suggested. OK, so Parsley was a talking, friendly lion, but at least he looked like a lion and not a cardboard cutout. Dill the Dog did what dogs do.. he chased his tail and dug holes. Similarly Ms Lemon, I can't remember not knowing what musical notes were, even though I didn't take proper music lessons until I was 8. It was certainly my first exposure to folk music (thank you, Toni Arthur)! LTS |
