21 Oct 03 - 12:32 PM (#1039011) Subject: RE: Dick Gaughans best CD From: Willie-O Handful of Earth for sure, and Gaughan. Redwood Cathedral is great too. None of them are bad, but if you like his political focus, A Different Kind of Love Song and Sail On will appeal more than if you don't care for polemics. For acoustic trad, his first solo LP on Trailer Records (I think this is locked up and unavailable due to the Dave Bulmer/Celtic Music scandal), No More Forever, is an absolute all-time classic. (From the same mid-70s era, he played guitar and sang one song on the first, eponymous Boys of the Lough album) The all-instrumental, Coppers and Brass is a historically significant album, in terms of the development of Celtic guitar style. However it's not that interesting by current standards, nor is the recording quality that great. So much to choose from...lucky you. |

21 Oct 03 - 03:23 PM (#1039143) Subject: RE: Dick Gaughans best CD From: GUEST,Flying Scotsman Live in Edinburgh is one of the best live recordings I have heard. The atmosphere is electric. The songs are a veritable "Best Of". The concert was Dick's return to singing after an 18 month break for medical reasons. At one time it was feared that he might not sing again so that live gig was something very special both for Dick and the audience. |

Oh how it must feel to just have discovered Him. Lucky You! JD |
21 Oct 03 - 04:19 PM (#1039167) Subject: RE: Dick Gaughans best CD From: Phil Cooper I'd agree with Handful of Earth. My other favorite is Kist O'Gold. If you can find a used LP of it, buy it, you won't be sorry. But that, as well as the first recording, will probably never see the light of day again. |

27 Oct 03 - 07:46 AM (#1042452) Subject: RE: Dick Gaughan's best CD From: Sandra in Sydney I recently bought his latest (well, it was 2002 on Greentrax, produced in Scotland, manufctured in Austria as the back cover says), Prentice Piece - A compilation from the First Three Decades. It's a double album & I also have Sail On, Outlaws & Dreamers, & Gaughan. I like them all. Spend your money on good music, after all you can't take it with you, so, why leave your hard-earned to someone who might not like good music? Or even worse, might not enjoy spending it? sandra |
