Can anyone tell me the name of the song and the artist who wrote (I think ) Mr. Moon? Some of the lyrics were "Mr. Moon shining bright is watching my baby tonight." I think it was in the Mid to late 60s.

I can find a listing for 'Gee, the Moon is shining bright' recorded in 1965 - and 'Please Mister Moon' from 1978.

wasn't able to get lyrics for either though - but the first looks like a good bet! That was by the Dixie Cups.

I can do you the lyrics and tune to "Oh Mr. Moon, Moon, bright and silvery moon, won't you please shine down on me"
I don't know who popularized it; I learned it at camp in the 50s.
Blessings,
Barbara

"The Coachmen" is the name of the band.

In August of 1965, Mr. Moon and Nothing At All were recorded at Sears Studio in Omaha, Nebraska. This first of the Band's six records was issued as a two sided release on MMC Records, a Cameron label. Both sides were featured to local radio stations throughout Nebraska and Iowa because both songs were well known among Coachmen followers via live performances at most of 200 shows the Band had played by the time the record was released. While Nothing At All was charted at a few local stations, Mr. Moon quickly caught fire and entered several regional charts within the top ten before reaching and holding the number one position for several weeks.

So The Coachmen version? Is not what we’re talking about. 1950 was a clue that gives it away. They are talking about the folk song called Mr. Moon. My grandpa learn the song from my great grandpa born 17 yrs after the Civil War. He grew up knowing the song. Passed it on.

Because the beginning are basically the same, but the middle parts and ending are different. I think I have the original version? Why? The Gatling gun was made in 1861 and used in the American Civil War. And in my version...the Gatling gun is used and because my great great grandma sang it as a lullaby? Logically speaking, being born less than 20 yrs after the war.... using that gun? Makes sense.

I don’t know of an author, but I do believe that some word of mouth folk songs are like telephone and change! Heck, The Barney Show made up Mr Sun. Not happy about that at all. But, it shows you how the song has changed to almost be less violent from the original, to be almost comical in the end.

What version did you learn? If you learned it in camp? Check out the last version I have. Washington State turned it into a camp song! Was that the way you learned it?

Original Version based on historical facts:
Oh, Mr. Moon, moon, bright and shiny moon,
Hiding behind that tree;
When your life’s in danger and you gotta run, ’Cause there’s a man behind you with a big Gattling gun.

Oh, Mr. Moon, moon bright and shiny moon,
Won’t you please shine down on, talk about your shine on,
Please shine down on meeeeeeee.

Other versions:

1)KANSAS:
Won't you come from behind that tree?
There stands a man with a big shot gun...(a big tree limb)
Ready for to shoot you if you start to run
Oh, Mister Moon, Moon, Great Big Silvery moon
Won't you please shine down on me!

2)MISSISSIPPI: .
...hidin' behind that tree
There's a man out there, with a big shotgun
and he'll shoot you so you better run.
So Mr. Moon moon bright & silvery moon
wont you please shine down on, please shine down on
Please shine down on me!

3)OHIO:
Now when the mood is mellow and the stars are bright
I'll be waiting for Maggie that night
Oh Mr. Moon, moon
Bright and silvery moon
Please shine down on
Never seem to shine on
Moon shine down on me
(and not my brother)
Moon shine down on me!

4)ILLINOIS:
Here comes Daddy with his big shotgun.
He will shoot you if you try to run.
So Mr. Moon, Moon,
Bright and shiny moon,
Won’t you please shine down on,
Please shine down on,
Please shine down on me?

5)IOWA
I'm gonna shoot that possum 'fore he starts to run,
I'm gonna shoot that possum with my big shot gun...
Oh Mr. Moon, Moon,
Bright and shiny moon,
Won’t you please shine down on me?
Down on,
Please shine down on,
Please shine down on me!

6)WASHINGTON STATE CAMP SONG
Right over there, there's a man with a gun,
Duh Nuh Nuh Nuh
He's gonna get you if you try to run,

So Mister Moon, moon,
Bright and shiny moon,
Won't you please shine down on,
Talk about your shine-on
Please shine down on me,
For the both of us... Yeah!

Hope this clears up some things. If you know of a different Mr Moon! Add it! Let’s see how it morphs!

There's even mention of Jim Dixon in there.
