His comrades were gathered around him To carry his fragments away. The mounting was piled on his wishbone, The breech-block was wrapped round his head, A shell stuck out of his elbow, It was plain that he soon would be dead. He spat out a toggle and rammer And stired in the oil where he lay. I'll have to look in my Kiss Me Goodnight, Sergeant Major, but I'm fairly sure it's one of that genre of wartime parodies of "Dress me up in my tarpaulin jacket" (or, just maybe, "The streets of Laredo").
