BS: Shattered City on CBC(Halifax)

Did anyone happen to watch the CBC's version of the Halifax Explosion last night. I would be interested to hear what people thought of it.It seems to have played fast and loose with history. And was that not Lunenburg in most scenes and not Halifax. Were there really German spies murdering Canadian officers on Water Street ? was that event not one of the most tragic in Canadian History, so why do they feel they have to "dramatize" such a dramatic story. I thought it was appalling.

Did you see the one several years ago on the Kinmel Uprising? The CBC likes its tragic Canadian history stories.

No, I didn't, but the explosion was tragic enough. I understand that Salter Street Fils was also involved. Think they'd know better as they are a Halifax Company.

Part Two was worse than part one, and I didn't think it could get any worse.

I have learned to avoid Canadian history produced by Canadian broadcasting companies (all of them).
I think that they assume the average Canadian IQ is about 25.
(All right, who out there said that?)

Agreed. When I want to entertained by Canadian history, I pick up a Pierre Berton book or listen to a James Keelaghan or James Gordon song.

I thought that "Canada ,A People's History wasn't too bad. But Shattered City was god awful. I don't think that all of the blame should fall on CBC, they only aired it. The Production companies should be ashamed of themselves. The script writer should be sent to remedial courses in History and in writing.

I found Canada: A People's History bent in the extreme. For the life of me I could not figure out why it constantly set the British and Habitants as 'them' and 'us' respectively. When the same army went down to burn Washington to the ground they suddenly became 'us'. Hmmm. I saw Shattered City and agree with most of what has been said here: it was a bit ... what the opposite of guilding the lily?

I don't get it why it's Halifax Explosion season all of a sudden. It's not an anniversary or anything. Do we all need cheering up or what?

There's a new CBC documentary that aired last night also, called "City of Ruins." Here's the CBC's Halifax Explosion page, which promotes both shows and also links to a bunch of online multimedia info sources.

I didn't see either show, so I'm reserving judgment and not holding my breath.

Considering what just happened to Halifax, this is kind of ironic--obviously coincidental timing since these were in the works long before Hurricane Juan flattened the harbour city again...
