Looking for Bruce Murdoch

I used to hang around with a Canadian performer by the name of Bruce Murdoch. It was in Greenwich Village 35 years ago. Anybody up there north of the border have any idea what became of him? I haaven't seen him since the early '70's.

Do a search in the data base. We have searched Bruce a few times before. I had heard he was teaching school in the western provinces somewhere.

Doing a little creative drill-down, I found that someone by that name is referenced in the "Battle River Regional Division #31 Curriculum Notes" of sometime in 2001 as being associated with Bashaw High School. It's in Alberta. Hope that helps.

...oops, no longer the principal of Bashaw School, but it looks like he's still on the Camrose and District Support Services board (here's their Web site). Boy, doing other folks' research sure is a lot more fun than doing my own...

I have it on excellent authority that Bruce never was the principal of Bashaw School. He was simply a teacher there. He had been principal of a school in the Northwest Territories for two years. He presently lives and teaches in Hinton, Alberta. The rumours of his death have been grossly overblown. And Mark, how the heck are you?

Dear Mark and Don,

It is great to find you guys. You know, I look at the pictures you have on this site--somewhere ever lost to me now because I am a computer idiot--and I have to ask why I'm the only one getting older and uglier? I don't know how I got to this site either, but having spent the past few days going through it, reading the comments made by people, and being fortunate enough to stumble across you both, I am a very happy camper. I have fond memories of you guys, and I pleased that you are still making music. I've been out of the loop for so long that I don't know where the loop is anymore. However, having someone want to know where I am--other than government officials--is quite refreshing. I don't know if it is permitted to post howru stuff here, and if I've breached a protocol, I apologize. Don, thank you for the very kind comment. I was able to get into the studio in 1980 (?) with Bill Garrett and Paul Mills for another album (with which I was pleased). I shall try to e-mail you both and I'll leave my e-mail address with you. If you can get in touch, I hope you do. By for now. Bruce Murdoch

BRUCE MURDOCH!!!

Are you still writing and singing?

Do you ever get back to Montreal? I remember so many great nights at the Folk Workshop, the Yellow Door, the Golem, Dawson College.

That was a great scene in the early 1970's. You and Jesse Winchester and Penny Lang and Tex Konig and Sean Gagnier and Ronney Abramson and Chris Rawlings and Russ & Sue and Bill & Sharon and Danny Farmer and Dennis Brown. I played three songs before you one night at the Folk Workshop. It must have been around 1971 or 1972.

Like so many others, I left Montreal in 1976. I still get back most summers.

Hi Ronnie,

It's good to hear from you. I am still wrting, but I don't sing any more than I have to to write songs. I guess you are aware that Tex and Sean have both passed on. Sue and Bill got married a few momnths back. Penny got a new CD out a few months ago, and that's about all I know. I haven't been to Montreal for lotsa years, and I don't expect to be going for a few more. Where do you live now, and what are you doing with yourself?

Some of Richie's info is wrong. However, none of the music is available anymore.

33 1/3 is a terrible album. I have a copy and I cringe at some of the takes. I also cringe when I hear my stuff on the SSP. But, I like lots of the stuff from the album I did with CBC. That isn't available any longer either.

Thanks for your interest though.

Brucie,

Not on the same record label scale at all, but I can indentify with your sentiments. In the folly of my youth, I put out an LP, about six months before I teamed up with Margaret. I really misheard/screwed up some of the lyrics that I did on it. So, they will not see the light of day again. It turns out that no one wanted to buy them anyway, since Margaret wasn't on them.
I remember looking through the bins at Discount Records in Chicago years ago and seeing 33 and 1/3. It's not a bad thing that we can be in a different place at this stage in time.

07 Dec 04 - 11:32 PM (#1350583)
Subject: RE: Looking for Bruce Murdoch
From: Peace

LOL, Phil. Really and truly.

There are three good songs on 33 1/3. About seven or eight on the CBC album. Some folks have liked Romp/Rov Days, so I won't say anything about that. But my gawd, ya know? Yeah, you know. And you're right: it's not a bad thing to be elsewhere at this stage of life. Regarding the 'scale': the scale is we know what we did and whether it's worth it or not. There is one important critic--you for you, and me for me. When THAT critic doesn't like it, man, that's a real bad review.

Angelo,

Marsha died from breast cancer as you know. She was a lovely, vivacious gal. The three of us hung out in NYC back in the later 1960s. Good friends. Sean--nee John Gonyea, and who later changed his name to Sean Gagnier (to acknowledge his Irish and French roots)--died in October, fourteen months ago.

I was unable to be there when Marsha or Sean died. I still miss them both. Something about circles and life here, Angelo. Thank you for posting this.

I socialliezed quite a bit with Sean Ganier and even with you on occassion. I've been on a nostalgia kick of late and came across your name here. It's good to now your still around. We had Penny Lang fpr a house concert here last year. I'm living in Sooke BC just outside Victoria on Vancouver Island. Still singing weekends. I so "Rompi Rovin Days" every now and then. I start recording my on CD in Januzary. Anyway, good to find you and I hope we can establish some kind of dialogue.

Wendy:
I crashed on your living room floor c. 1965. Artie Gold must have connected us.
I knew Avi, Tex and (swear it's true) "gave" Sean Gagnier (b. John Gonyea) his name
one day at his Hutchinson Street apartment.

I remember Bruce's room above the Blue Lantern, before it became the Penelope.
(BTW - Gary Eisencraft, O"H, passed away in California a few years ago.)

Big Joe Williams, of Blessed Memory, stayed in one of the upstairs rooms, too when he played in the coffee house below. I used to carry his guitar, read menus to him
and help him send money orders home; he signed his name with an X. Functionally illiterate, he drove himself all around the US for years. When he came to Montreal ("Montreal Blues"), he packed his own frying pan; he fried chicken for me one evening.   The man had incredible stamina. I spent ten glorious days with him; I was about 18 at the time and free as a bee.

I remember you rising early in the AM, lighting a cigarette and looking tenderly at the
hippies snoozing on the floor. There was a large hirsute guy from NY named Harley crashing there, who your landlord freaked out over and verbally assaulted in the stairwell.

I would see Tex regularly in Toronto, in the '70s - '90s and drive him to his doctor's appointments out in Scarborough. You shoulda seen my little Toyota truck just lean over when he stepped in.

Check out my CDs: The Yiddish ones are on Tzadik Records.

Bruce also gave one of his stellar performances at the Yellow Door on Saturday night. The audience included a couple who drove down from Ottawa for the occasion. There were also others from "back then" and some student-aged young folks. The applause said it; he was very well appreciated. The new songs are marvellous and there are quite a few.

The Yellow Door concert, despite being poorly attended, was, Bruce-wise, brilliant. He's got another one tonight, with Crossing North and Kitchen Party at the Side Door Coffee House in Pierrefonds, QC.

Thanks for the update. When I left, he seemed to be a little bit snuffly. I would have liked to have made that concert too, but I wasn't sure immigration wouldn't come looking for me. Had to go home SOMETIME!

I'm glad he's back playing gigs, and I'm glad I got to a couple of them.

I dunno why, but when he sent me some raw tunes a while back, I had this feeling HE was "back again"... maybe, just maybe, on his way back. To read the posts above, it seems he on track to make it back. I, and, obviously others, hope it will come to fruition.

"I. Love. This. Thread."

I do too Max, it's what brought me to Mudcat when I, wondering whatever happened to BM, plugged his name into the Google machine and ended up here, and I'm glad I did.

Ahhhh... sorry... when I said "...hope it will come to fruition.", I meant sommat I should not even allude to. Given what we have seen so far, it seems inevitable.

Sandy,
hear you loud and clear. And Max, this is what Mudcat should be about, and I get a feeling that this was your intention from the beginning.
Bruce now lives about a Kl. (mile)away from me. I am privileged to have him so close. I would not have stated this except that it is already out that he has moved from Auberta. Please give him time to settle in and get acquainted with his surroundings. i am sure that when he is comfortable he will be back.

I'm not sure if those of you who have been looking for Bruce have found him or not.

Here is his myspace which features some great clips of his newest CD.

Youtube videos are also available of him performing some of his songs.

There are two videos on YouTube. There were a couple that Bruce paid to have done by a studio and olddude hosted on his site, but olddude took them down and I don't know if they still exist in this world.

I think that Bruce (AKA Peace, 999) has drawn back from the Mudcat due to all of the crap that has floated to the surface here over the last few months. That is a shame and Mudcat's loss but I hope for his return, along with other friends who have disappeared! I suspect that some still lurk and that a more respectful forun will see them posting once again!
