25 Mar 04 - 06:41 PM (#1146229) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: GUEST,Thomas Stern Looking forward to this years festival. Hope the publicity machine is a lot better than last year - radio stations, folk shows, local tv entertainment reporters, Sing Out & Dirty Linen festival directory, WNYC Summer Activities directory, Libraries-New York City & Suburbs, NJ, CT, Record Stores, NYC tourist bureau, Folk Clubs up and down the East Coast (Boston, NY, NJ, CT, Md, DC, Va, etc.), Newspapers (last year only NYT, how about all the local give away papers devoted to the arts up and down the east coast & metropolitan area, Gannett group papers, similar up and down the coast), UMD Eisteddfod mailing list, Folk websites (Ballad list, etc), etc. Many of the directories need info WELL IN ADVANCE. The trip last year would have been nice to take, but no arrangements were made for out-of-towners. Need early check-in at Poly or hotel, transportation (can't have 50 people driving their cars in NYC with any expectation of parking etc)to embarcation point or subway/bus info, early puclication of trip details, arrangements and costs. Had a wonderful time last year and expect at least as good a time this year, but hope the festival will be enjoyed by a larger audience. |

08 Aug 04 - 01:37 AM (#1242274) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: WFDU - Ron Olesko I am very excited about this festival! I'm also honored that I was asked to be one the emcees, again! Oscar Brand (the legend who blazed the trail for those of us who do folk music radio) and Mary Cliff (who hosts the original TRADITIONS program in DC) are also emcees. Between he three of us, we have been presenting folk music on radio for a total of over 120 years! (I'm the rookie with 29 years!) The workshops are simply amazing. I am really looking forward to Ed Cray's symposium on Woody Guthrie, sponsored by Heritage Muse. Last year,Howard Glasser hosted a superb workshop on the work of the late Hamish Henderson and this year Howard will be presenting a workshop on Jeannie Robertson. There is another workshop I don't want to miss on Peter Bellamy and Rudyard Kipling with John Roberts, David Kleiman, Ken Schatz and Heather Wood. So many great workshops. I am very impressed. Wow! A lot of festivals just gather a handful of performers, give them an hour and a stage, and slap a title on it so it can be called a workshop. You end up with artists who are not that comfortable with each other in what becomes a "can you top this" session. Not so at Eisteddfod. These workshops are well thought out and the sharing of great songs and information is really a communal experience. On my TRADITIONS program this Sunday (August 8), I will present a preview at 4pm Eastern Time. WFDU can be heard at 89.1FM in the NYC area or via the internet through our website at www.wfdu.fm. I do hope that many of you will attend this festival. I felt like a kid in a candy store last year with all the diverse, exciting and interesting workshops and performers. I was in awe of the talent that Eisteddfod presented in 2003 and this year promises to be another fantastic event. To gather an assembly of TRADITIONAL artists like is a monumental task, and the organizers certainly delivered. I promise that if you attend, you will not only have a great time, but you will surprise yourself at how much you will learn. It is going to be fun!!!! Ron |

16 Aug 04 - 03:12 PM (#1248789) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Janice, I guess you won't want my opinion either! :) While I was the MC on Sunday afternoon, I spent most of my weekend at the festival. I thought the music was superb, the rooms were way too hot because of a broken down air conditioning, and the attendance was still too low. A few "surprises" for me were Ralph Boddington. A really find banjo picker from the hills of... Rhode Island! Great voice and a wonderful ballad singer. I was also very impressesed with Mark Gilston. It was also nice to finally get a chance to see Judy Cook! I've loved her CD and she was a very captivating performer. Again, I might be biased since I was an MC, although not an organizer. In addition to hearing reactions from those that went, I would be curious as to why people like Janice did not go. Was it location, cost, etc? |

17 Aug 04 - 02:11 PM (#1249549) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 -- Question From: GUEST,Jerry Epstein Well I of course am an organizer so I won't give my opinions of the incredible music, but I will ask a question. It was interesting to see the comments above from two who would have liked to come but had prior commitments. I would like very much to receive from any other persons who thought about coming but did not, the considerations that wound up with you not coming. Janice above felt that both the location and cost were very reasonable. Any comments from others? What about the time of year? We have wanted to allow maximum use of the Polytechnic dorms, which dictated that it be not in regular session. But this August time is not the only possibility. There were about 110 people there, plus performers and volunteers, a lot less than needed to make it viable for the long haul. We have lots of theories from people who were there about why others did not come. I do not need specualtion about others, I would like to hear from any who did not come about your own reasons (assuming of course that this strongly traditional festival is your kind of thing). Feel free to email me at jerepst@att.net. I am a fanatic fan of Hedy (and Ralph Bodington, mentioned by Ron), and I knew the interaction between the Gospel Jubilee and people like Andy Cohen and others would be mind blowing. . . . and it is a major reason for the huge effort to make this come off to allow this kind of interaction. 17 Aug 04 - 02:15 PM (#1249555) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: GUEST,Jerry Epstein I guess one more question. . . . . 17 Aug 04 - 02:20 PM (#1249558) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Andy Cohen is a festival on his own!! 17 Aug 04 - 02:34 PM (#1249565) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: WFDU - Ron Olesko ... and many thanks to Jerry Epstein and his crew who put all of this together. Speaking as a fan of traditional music, this gathering was very special. I had an real easy role - just stand there and introduce performers. Jerry and his crew literally spent the past year organizing the event and aside from an air conditioner (which was out of their hands), I did not see one slip up or omission all weekend. Everyone was made to feel comfortable and the music was amazing. Because I do a radio show, I receive about a dozen CD's each week. I can honestly say that I heard more great songs at Eisteddfod this past weekend than I've received all year long. I know Janice was asking for feedback from people who were not connected wtih the festival, but I had to share my thoughts. In my opinion, this festival plays an important role. I feel that Eisteddfod is an important link in the chain in the continuing the interest in traditional music. Perhaps most importantly, it shows how much fun it is to SHARE music. Folk music is meant to be participatory, not an exhibition. Eisteddfod,in a very unassuming way, brought that message home. I really hope that it can continue. This festival deserves support. Thank you again Jerry. You and the volunteers did an amazing job. |

17 Aug 04 - 02:50 PM (#1249576) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: Zhenya I was there for most of the weekend, although I had a conflict too, and left midday on Saturday and never made it back. (In my case, it was another traditional music event, so it was sort of related.) I really enjoyed the festival. I third (well it's already been seconded!) the comments about Ralph Bodington, who I had never heard of before, and really liked. I play the fiddle, although not old time style (yet! It's rapidly seeping into my brain the last few years!) and particular enjoyed hearing Rafe Stefanini, who I had heard of, but never heard, and Paul Brown. And seeing long time favorites like John Roberts and Ian Robb. I think I made too many new discoveries to list here, but I enjoyed every minute I was there. Thank you to all of you who put this on for all the hard work that went into it! I didn't go the year before, which I now regret, and I have to admit I was sitting on the fence a bit about going, which I also now regret. Why? When I initially saw the list, I only recognized the names of a few performers, and wasn't sure if I would like a whole weekend, as I didn't really have a sense of what would be going on. Once I saw the actual list of workshops posted on the website, I got a lot more interested. If you were able to do it again, I would make it a priority in future years. So I'd like to add my two cents about the attendance question. Maybe, instead of asking the "why didn't you attend" question in this thread (which might mainly be read by people who did attend), you might want to post a separate thread on Mudcat. And maybe at Pinewoods concerts and similar events, ask if people who didn't attend would fill out a brief survey about why they didn't go. I tried to talk friends into going, and scheduling was a big problem, especially due to the many other events taking place in NYC on Saturday night, in particular. There was also no day (only) rate listed for Saturday and Sunday. I knew a few people that were interested in coming for the workshops, but not to the concerts, and didn't want to pay $50. I asked about this when I got my ticket, but it wasn't really clear if they would be able to do that or not. Other friends said there were some things they were really interested in, but not enough to devote the time and money overall. So maybe part of a survey would be to ask if there was too much of some kinds of music, or not enough of others. (I was pretty content myself, but maybe this would help grow the audience.) I've attended the Old Songs festival for may years, and they always include a card with the program asking things like what types of music people are interested in, and what they might like to see added to the festival. They also take people's zip codes at the gate to see where the audience is coming from. So that kind of thing might help to target the audience better. At any rate, just some brainstorming here. I do hope the attendance problem can be worked out, bureaus this really was a wonderful weekend. Zhenya |

17 Aug 04 - 05:08 PM (#1249708) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: Dave Ruch What a shame on the attendance numbers - there should have been 10x that many people there. I wonder if there would be some way to tap into the Old Songs crowd. You've got to figure that some fairly decent percentage of the thousands of folks who attend that one in late June would be interested in this event, and would live close enough to make it to NYC. Jerry, I'm at the other end of the state in Buffalo NY, but if there's anything I can do to help promote this next year, feel free to call on me. |

18 Aug 04 - 01:34 PM (#1250542) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: Janice in NJ Time of year is a problem. My prior commitment was to go hiking in Vermont and New Hampshire, and the middle of the summer is the best time. If you could push the festival closer to either the Fourth of July or to Labor Day it might be easier for people like me who don't want to split their summer travels into two pieces. An alternative would be to move to festival to the winter break or to the spring break. Would the dorms be available? Maybe not, because students usually keep their stuff in their rooms while on break. |

21 Aug 04 - 09:20 PM (#1253163) Subject: RE: Eisteddfod-NY 2004 From: GUEST,Ben in NY August is a terrible time for a festival in NYC. The only reason I came at all is becauses my other plans fell through. Also, the lack of air conditioning in the Auditorium was a disaster; I may not come again. However, the music was Fantastic. Some of the workshops were supherb, even though I didn't know all the people. Yes, Ralph Bodington, in the banjo workshop on Sunday was even better than he was at the concert. Why wasn't Allan Friend included in that workshop? He played a pretty mean banjo and sang wonderful songs in the workshop with Julia Friend, who was a GREAT singer, on Sat. I hadn't heard either of the Friends before, but they were both excellent--- Their harmonies and stage presence were wonderful. Julia Friend was great in the Ballads workshop. Hedy West, Andy Cohen, and Iaan Robb were all people I were familiar with, and they were all as good as they always are. I would like to come again next year, if it's not in August & not at Polytech.
