Hi,

Im looking for the lyrics to a song called "The Bull Of Kildare".
I heard it a while back at a music session in Ireland and I havent
been able to come across the song since. Another song that I havent
managed to find the lyrics to is "the missus, her mother, the bulldog and me". If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

'The Missus,Her Mother, the Bulldog and Me' was recorded by John Kennedy on 'the Girls along the road'

I found I reference to 'The Bull of Kildare' in a write up of a youth event.

Might it have been the Curragh of Kildare? In a pub session with a lot of chatting going on, 'curragh' has the right vowel sound to sound like 'Bull'.

I was thinking possibly....

I get the impression that The Bull of Kildare is quite modern and not known outside the part of Ireland where its writer lives; could easily be mistaken, but I can't really see anyone mistaking "curragh" for "bull", even after a long night in the pub. I find only the John Kennedy example of the other song, as MMario describes; Roud lists it at no. 13157.

Malcolm, I could see ME mistaking it, if it were loud enough. I did some more poking around as your post indicated there was a song.

This page for St Kevin's Oratory contains a reference: "...sing-song on Saturday night (particularly Kev's 'The Bull of Kildare'."

There's an e-mail address on the page to A 'Kevin'. (Under 'Open House') It looks like a fairly old page, though.

As far as I remeber the last verse in the bull of kildare
went something like:

Coming back from the desert
He passed through Belfast
The bull got caught up in a mighty bomb blast
Now the bull is not full
That's the truth I declare
Now the cows have no use for the bull of Kildare

Still havent had much luck getting the song or it's lyrics.

Ok the song is "Bull of Kildare"

The chorus is:
Oh bull of kildare all the cows in the land love your horns,
I do swear, two mighty fine horns has the bull of Kildare.

I'm not sure of the rest of the words but I can get them
I'll post them here as soon as I do.

"The missus , her mother, the bulldog and me" (or similar variants) is fairly well known in Ireland. I've heard John Campbell sing it live, OK - but don't have a set of words. If they don't appear here soon, i'll see what I can do.

"The Bull Of Kildare" is sung to the tune of "Mull Of Kintyre". "The missus , her mother, the bulldog and me" as far as I remember is sung the the "Mountains Of Mourne" (but im not too sure).

I'm not sure who wrote "The Bull Of Kildare". I heard it at a music session a while back but haven't heard it since. I would assume it's a song that only appeared in recent years. It's quiet humourous so hopefully the full lyrics will appear sometime soon! :o)

Hello
I may be able to help you in your search for these lyrics if you havent allready got them. these two songs were sung by a man i used to play in a folk group with some 15 years ago, although he's moved away the old crooner aint dead yet! i will see if his memory can pull them out of somewhere, if he does, or has any information on where to get these lyrics i will pass it on. from what i remember the bull of kildare was sung to the mull of kyntire and the missuss... sung to the air of a song called a damsel of 90 years old.
Will try my best within the week for you! watch this space!!!!!

This is a song that i heard myself. Think it is a fairly local, and modernish folk song. Anyone in the Kildare area will know of course of Goffs Bloodstock, where Irelands best Throughbreads are bred, always assumed that this is what inspired the song. Cant say i know it, but snatches of it come to mind

First verse:
I'll Tell you a story about a great bull,
Who's Sex-ual life he has lived to the full
A beast this divine is surely quite rare,
Oh There's none in the land, like the bull of Kildare,

Chourus:
Oh bull of Kildare, all the cows in the land lover your horns
i do swear two mighty fine horns has the bull of Kildare

2nd verse ??
Think it mentions something about the cherelot, and the jersy from clare have all been encalved by the bull of Kildare

There is a few verses here then regarding his world travels till he ends up in the sahara, and as above the last verse goes....

Coming back from the desert, he passed through Belfast
The Bull got caught up in a mighty bomb blast,
Now the bull is not full, thats the truth i declare
And the cows have no use for the bull of KILDARE!!!!.

unfortunatly more than this i can't enlighten you. but maybe this will jog the memory of someone, posiibly GUEST BARRY. Seems a good hope ????

This is a story about a great bull.
His sexual life he has lived to the full.
A beast this divine is surely quite rare.
Oh, there's none in the land like the bull of Kildare.

CHORUS: Bull of Kildare, all the cows in the land love your horns, I swear.
Two mighty fine horns has the bull of Kildare.

In a faraway desert, there lived an oil sheik.
With a hundred young wives, sure the man was gone weak.
Now the wives were neglected, they demanded fair play,
So the sheik sent a call for the Bull of Kildare. CHORUS

Coming back from the desert, he passed through Belfast.
His hindquarters got caught up in a mighty bomb blast.
Now the bull is not full, that's the truth I declare,
And the cows have no use for the Bull of Kildare.

HOW'S THAT?

I'd say I'm missing a verse, but sure we're getting there aren't we?

And 'tis by Galleon, I'm fairly sure anyway

Good luck

Here we are at last, the full version:

BULL OF KILDARE

This is a story about a great bull.
His sexual prowess he has lived to the full.
A beast this divine is surely quite rare.
Oh, there's none in the land like the bull of Kildare.

CHORUS:
Oh Bull of Kildare,
All the cows in the land love your horns, I do swear.
Two mighty fine horns has the bull of Kildare.

Now far has he travelled and much has he seen
The Shorthorn, the White-head, the old Limousine,
the Freisen, the Charolais and the Jersey from Clare.
Oh they all loved being bulled by the bull of Kildare.

In a faraway desert, there lived an oil sheik.
Whose ten thousand wives, sure the man was gone weak
The wives weren't happy they demanded fair share
So the sheik sent a call for the bull of Kildare.

Coming back from the desert, he passed through Belfast.
His hindquarters got caught up in a mighty bomb blast.
Now the bull is not full, that's the truth I declare,
For the bomb blew the balls off the bull of Kildare.

Here's a message I received from somebody who would prefer to remain anonymous. Was this song really by Paul McCartney?

I don't know how to find old threads. I noticed in the unanswered
thread now on Mudcat that some stanzas were missing. This may solve
    that one anyway.

    BULL OF KILDARE
    (P.McCartney - Galleon)

    1.
This is a story about a great bull,
O his sexual life he's led to the full,
All the farmers around were mad I declare,
O to have their cows serviced by the bull of Kildare.

    Chorus
Bull of Kildare all the cows in the land,
    Love your horns I swear,
    Two mighty fine horns,
    Have the Bull of Kildare.

    2.
Much has he travelled and much has he seen,
The Shorthorn and the Hereford and the old Aberdeen.
The Polly and the Charolais and the Jersey from Clare.
O they've all been in calf by the bull of Kildare.

    3.
In a far away desert there lived an oil sheik,
With a hundred young wives o that man was gone weak,
The wives were neglected they demanded fair play,
So the sheik sent a call for the bull of Kildare.

    4.
Coming back from the desert the bull passed through Belfast,
His hind quarters got caught in a mighty bomb blast,
Now the bull is not full that's the truth I do swear,
And the cows have no use for the bull of Kildare.

    5.
Bull of Kildare all the cows in the land miss,
    Your horns I swear,
For the horns were blown off of,
    The Bull of Kildare.

It appears to be a song that uses the tune of 'Mull of Kintyre' which was written by Paul McCartney. I'd still like the parody we heard in Ireland years ago about faulty electrical equipment - I'll take it for repair to Curry's of Kildare.
