Hi

Looking for the lyrics and origin of a song I only remember 2 lines of..

"3 little monkeys in a peanut shell
one can sing one can dance one can make me a pair of pants.."

Something along those lines..

I remember it as a kid so it's probably a childrens song..

Thanks for any help..

The way I remember it from my youth was... whenever you found a peanut with three nuts in the shell, you needed to sing the little ditty for good luck. The song went:

"I know something I won't tell Three little peanuts in one shell One can sing and one can dance one can wear a pair of pants.

Shave and a hair cut... two bits."

I have words, though my version has rabbits, not monkeys. I know it as a spoken verse, not a song. I do not know the origin.

I know something I won't tell,
Three little rabbits in a peanut shell.
One can sing, one can dance,
One can sew a pair of pants.

I recite this rhythmically with/for young children using hand motions. i repeat, each time leaving off a line, mouthing the unspoken words and continuing the hand motions. After the whole verse has been done wordlessly, I repeat a final time with a louder voice.

I Know Something

I know something,
But I won't tell.
Three little monkeys,
in a peanut shell.
One can read,
And one can dance,
And one has a hole,
in the seat of his pants!

I remember a similar rhyme from a nursery school in the mid 1960's:
I've got a secret I can't tell
Three little peanuts in a peanut shell
I can't tell, I can't tell,
three little peanuts in a peanut shell.

There were two additional versus, I don't remember the second, but the last was:
Why does the witch fly on her broom
back and forth in front of the moon
I know why, I know why,
to sweep the cobwebs out of the sky

I've been looking for the entire song for more than 30 years and am starting to think that this nursery school outside of Portland, OR may have written this tune themselves for the children there.

I remember it as
I know something I won’t tell,
3 monkeys in a peanut shell,
One can read,
One can write,
One can smoke a cracker pipe

My son just learned in music class:
I know something I won’t tell
Three little monkeys in a peanut shell
One can read and one can write
And one can smoke a corncob pipe

I believe I have slightly more information about this rhyme in Ethel Park Richardson's American Mountain Songs, but I'm currently not in possession of my copy. I'll see if it's actually there in a few weeks when I get my book back

I was mistaken; that book doesn't have this rhyme in it
