Why do you need the recording? Does it have to be Rosalie singing it?

I need it for a presentation I am doing for my daughter. It was one of her favorite songs when she was little and her brothers were born. It does not need to be her singing. I do not believe it was her on the one I had when my child was small. Thanks!

Debbie, how soon do you need it?

I see the Digitrad entry for I'm Gonna Tell has no tune for it. (If you had the tune YOU could sing it.) I'll contact Dick Greenhaus of CAMSCO records (he's a Mudcat member); since you aren't signed in as a member you can't send him a personal message. I'll suggest he contact you; he has lots of old stuff now on CD.

I'M GONNA TELL (from DT)
(Rosalie Sorrels)

I'm gonna tell, I'm gonna tell
I'm gonna holler and I'm gonna yell
I'll get you in trouble for everything you do
I'm gonna tell on you

I'm gonna tell how you broke the plate
And I'll tell about all the bananas you ate
I'll tell on you one time, I'll tell on you two
I'm gonna tell on you

I'm gonna tell 'bout where you hid your gum
And I'm gonna tell that you still suck your thumb
I'm even gonna tell her about the cat and the glue
I'm gonna tell on you

I'm gonna tell 'bout where you hid the broom
So you would not have to clean up your room
And when she finds out, she'll sweep it with you
I'm gonna tell on you

I'm gonna tell how you punched me and bit me
And I'm gonna tell how you socked me and hit me
But I'm not gonna tell Momma what I did to you
I'm gonna tell on you

I'm gonna holler and I'm gonna bawl
And she's gonna smash you all over the wall
And when he comes home, I'll tell Daddy too
I'm gonna tell on you

rosalie has a new "album" out

"learned by livin' sung by heart.."
and she has re-issued many of her
earlier collections of tunes and stories;
one has baby rockin' songs.
another
and there will be another finished before christmas
no doubt you can get recordings at her appearances and
here is where you can hear her:

FREIGHT AND SALVAGE... Berkeley, CA.
this is an album release party for the new album:
info here:

I will be finishing my new CD... called MY LAST GO ROUND... a live concert recording made in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2002 March 23 at the Sanders Theater on the Harvard Campus... My guests were Jean Ritchie, Peggy Seeger, David Bromberg, Christine Lavin, Loudon Wainright 111, and Patrick Sky. I had a six-piece band featuring Mitch Greenhill, electric and acoustic guitar, Roma Baran, acoustic guitar, dobro and high-strung guitar, Teresina Huxtable, piano and accordian, Peter Madcat Ruth, harmonica, Vivian Stoll, drums... and all those voices joining me along with the world's most perfect audience... all these people have been my teachers and collaborators for years. I had the best of staging and sound and a hell of a party afterward... I had an eight hour rehearsal the day before and WGBH recorded everything... all this made possible by Multistage productions of Boston. My friend Ellen Friedman made me feel like a little kid who got her head patted and a warm voice said "You've been a good girl and you can have anything you want"... and all that shows in the recording which has been pared down from a 3 hour concert to an hour and remixed for a CD by Roma, Mitch and Viv so that you hear it as though you are there. I can't wait to have all my friends hear it too. Dave Van Ronk was supposed to be there, but he left us all crying the blues he sang so well a few weeks before we got together... I've got no words to say how much we miss him, so the concert and the CD have to say it for us. There's a big debt, too, to Ken Kesey who inspired the title song... stay tuned... soon I'll add some sample tunes to my website and as soon as the graphics are finished, I'll show you the cover.

January 30th
Cambridge and a celebration of MY LAST GO ROUND with WGBH...
... Multistage and as many of the original cast of thousands as can get into that little church... more later... love, Rosalie.

Rosalie is a special person and everyone should support her by buying everything she has for sale on her site, but this song isn't on any of them!

don't know that she actually recorded it herself.

I have travelled out to Idaho to see and hear her, well worth the trip and I recommend anyone who can to go out and get to see her if she comes near them.

Utah Philips sang the song on one of his Loafer's Glory programs, which I can find when I get home next Monday. Theoretically I should be able to digitize the recording and email it, but I've only succeeded in doing that once. If you want I'll give it another try next week.

I heard Rosalie sing this song in Seattle this past spring. She said she was inspired to write this song as she was up on a ladder painting her living room while her children were fighting and rough-housing down below her. She's a fantastic lady, back singing after a brief retirement (she was bored with not much to do!). A great singer, writer, and story teller!

Cheers, S. in Seattle

I have a digitized version of "I'm Gonna Tell" sung by Cathy Fink and Duck Donald. This album was from cathy fink and was actually named "I'm gonna tell". It's an album of Fink, Donald and Peter Van Camp performing live, and it is an absolute GEM. So strange that it is not offered anywhere (Amazon, etc).

this person, a guest, may not be quite as desperate to get this song today as she was 5 years ago when she first posted this request.

Somewhere I have a cassette of Utah Phillips singing it on a Seattle variety program called "Sandy Bradley's Potluck." I recorded the cassette from the radio (KUOW, Seattle NPR affiliate)in 1987 or 1988. I remember him introducing the song by saying, "Rosalie made this song up to devil her kids..."

I no longer have a cassette dubbing machine and I don't have any other fancy equipment, so I'm not sure how I'd get a copy to anyone, but I'll ponder it!

I had a friend who knew this song sing his version for everyone - I know it's not exactly the same melody as the original, but maybe this can help keep this song alive!

I used to teach this song to school kids. I learned it from a Michael Cooney LP and later had it on a Cathy Fink & Duck Donald LP.
There are a few people on YouTube singing it.
