I wonder where Robert Urich got the idea that he could replace Lionel Barrymore? Or that that non person could replace Manuel? Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself. |

As for me I can't imagine Disco Troop as looking like anyone but Lionel Barrymore. I also seem to recall that Manuel was a much less prominant figure in the book. "Captain's Courageous" still has the best schooner sailing ever filmed I'd guess. That is the film where I fell in love with Dorys. Don |

06 Nov 03 - 08:45 AM (#1049132) Subject: RE: Review: Captain's Courageous From: Midchuck Is there actually an apostrophe in the title? That would imply that a certain captain (singular, otherwise the apostrophe would be after the "S") owned a "courageous." But "courageous" is an adjective, not a noun, so that doesn't make sense. Oh well, none of us is perfect. I'd probably get the poop deck confused with the head, and end up being keelhauled... Peter. |

06 Nov 03 - 08:45 AM (#1049133) Subject: RE: Review: Captain's Courageous From: kendall I don't know who they had for experts , but, when I saw this schooner with the jib and forsail set and an anchor rode out, that got my attention. Then when they were talking about all the Cod they were catching, and it was obvious that they were actually catching Haddock, that turned the screw a bit more. Finally, not one of the vessels was a Gloucester Grand Banks schooner. Oh, and the mail boat? She was a brig when she arrived, but became a schooner when she left. I turned it off before the end. Reminds me of the world famous Lippazan Stallions. You know, the white show horses? All I saw were mares and geldings. Why do such things bug me? |

06 Nov 03 - 12:55 PM (#1049279) Subject: RE: Review: Captain's Courageous From: Melani Pardon my heresy, but I didn't really like the original movie, at least not the story line. Manuel didn't die in the book, and Harvey was older--old enough to be a competent fisherman, not a cute little ten-year-old. The schooners were great, but I got distracted by the deviation from the book, which is a wonderful short masterpiece. And no, I didn't see the remake. Sounds like I shouldn't bother. |

I've read that was supposed to be authentic Did any of our experts see that? I was impressed. To digress - saw Gordon Bok last week, his new cd is really nice, lots of great songs and variety. Nice falla too. Chris in Wheaton. |

08 Nov 03 - 06:09 PM (#1050278) Subject: RE: Review: Captain's Courageous From: Clifton53 Hi Mary, yes it was Freddie in the lead role. Mickey Rooney played Capt. Disco's son Dan. The crew sings a song of couplets such as I posted above with the chorus 'Oh what a terrible man' sung twice. |

09 Nov 03 - 04:26 PM (#1050757) Subject: RE: Review: Captain's Courageous From: DonMeixner So Kendall, except for the change or total lack of gender, weren't the Lipazaners still impressive? I'd more incensed about going to Austria to find the Spanish Riding school. By the way, anyone remember the remake with Karl Malden as Disco Troop and Ricardo Montalban as Manuel? Don |
