Today my grandnephew (5 months old) is having open heart surgery. If we each sing one lullabye today it will surely pull him through.

Here's one I wrote for my own wee one. I sing it every night, calling the quarters to protect him. It's a version of All Through the Night:

Martin's Welsh Lullaby

Sleep, my child, and peace attend thee
        All through the night.
I call guardians to defend thee
        All through the night.
From the east, the wind and weather,
South the sun, and west the water,
From the north, the earth our mother
        All through the night.

Drift, my child, on clouds of slumber
        All through the night,
Azure, crimson, jade, and umber
        All through the night.
Guarded by the owl unsleeping,
Cat a-prowling, frog a-leaping,
And the bear who watch is keeping
        All through the night.

Dream, my child, no fear nor sadness
        All through the night.
Only love and warmth and gladness
        All through the night.
Softly breathing, gently sighing,
Nothing wanting, no more crying,
In thy peaceful bed a-lying
        All through the night.

I just sang it for the little one. Who's next?

Claire

PS BW -- Knowing a name would help; it makes it easier to send the blessing.

FOREVER YOUNG
Bob Dylan

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

Canadian, M.G., but I'm sure he wouldn't mind a bit.

Little babies with big heart problems tire very easily. Now Matthew is incredibly tired, as anyone is after surgery, all wired up in intensive care. I'm not allowed in to IC, so I sing this from home:

Bed is too small for my tiredness
Give me a hilltop with trees
Tuck a cloud up under my chin
Lord, blow the moon out please

Rock me to sleep in a cradle of dreams
Sing me a lullaby of leaves
Tuck a cloud up under my chin
Lord, blow the moon out please

Here's a little good night
Here's a little sleep tight
Here's a little pleasant dreams too
Don't you be forlorn I'll see you in the morn
Here's a little good night for you

I had a little fence and it cost me ten cents
I put it...so my dreams could come true
You don't need a ??? or a tweedle die die
Just a little good night will do

Glad to hear that Matthew is out and on the road to recovery BW
I wish you all Blessings and Healing Energy
and Ill sing the wee Lamb a Fairy's Lullaby to night.

Dear babe 'tis a cradle of love that holds thee,
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,
And softly the snowy white fleece enfolds thee,
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,
In airy bowers I'll watch o'er thy sleep.
While branchy trees to the breezes sweep;
In airy bowers I'll watch o'er thy sleep.
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,

Rest thee babe for soon thee will wake from slumber,
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,
They shall fly as the fairy hosts sing you their numbers,
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,
In airy bowers I'll watch o'er thy sleep.
While branchy trees to the breezes sweep;
In airy bowers I'll watch o'er thy sleep.
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,

In chariots of gold o'er the ocean we'll wander,
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,
With the hosts of the deep all the night we will squander
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,
In airy bowers I'll watch o'er thy sleep.
While branchy trees to the breezes sweep:
In airy bowers I'll watch o'er thy sleep.
Shuh-heen-sheh, shuh-heen-sheh a-lo,

Rest well and sleep easy wee Bairn

Oh the joy of it all. Great news indeed Black Walnut.
Little Matthew home in his own wee bed.
Blessings indeed!

Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's going to buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's going to buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's going to buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's going to buy you a billy goat.
And if that billy goat won't pull,
Mama's going to buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's going to buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's going to buy you a horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town

If you've ever had surgery, you'll remember how much it hurts in the offending place for a while after the operation. Matthew hurts, so he cries, so he coughs, so he hurts, so he cries, so ....so nobody gets too much sleep in that house. Otherwise, I'm told he's healing well!

My early childhood music classes voted Oats Peas Beans and Barley as their favourite lullaby of the fall session. The version I've taught them is:

Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow

Come my love and go with me
Come my love and go with me
Come my love and go with me
And I will take good care of thee

You are too young, you are not fit
You are too young, you are not fit
You are too young, you are not fit
You cannot leave your mother yet

But oats, peas, beans and barley grow
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow

You're old enough now, you're just about right
You're old enough now, you're just about right
You're old enough now, you're just about right
I asked your mother last Saturday night

So come my love and go with me
Come my love and go with me
Come my love and go with me
And I will take good care of thee

Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow

My favorite growing up was always "All the Pretty Little Horsies". The version my mom sang goes like this:

Hush-a-bye, don't you cry,
Go to sleepy little baby.
When you wake you will have
All the pretty little horsies.
Dapple and grey,
Pinto and bay,
All the pretty little horsies.

Birds and the butterflies buzzin' all around,
Poor little lambie cryin' "Mama".
When you wake you will have
All the pretty little horsies.
Dapple and grey,
Pinto and bay,
All the pretty little horsies.

Mama loves you, Papa loves you,
Go to sleepy, pretty baby.
When you wake you will have
All the pretty little horsies.
Dapple and grey,
Pinto and bay,
All the pretty little horsies.

GOODNIGHT LITTLE BUCKAROO
(Hank Snow)

You're a tired buckaroo little pal,
You've been ridin' hard all day little pal,
Soon the sandman will be callin'
As the twilight shadows fall
And you'll go ridin' down the Milky Way.

CHORUS: So lay your curly head upon your pillow
While your faithful dog stands watching over you,
Close your tired little eyes
While I croon a lullaby,
And you'll ride the trail to dreamland, buckaroo.

Mr. Moon is shining high up above,
And your eyes they soon will close my little love,
So sweet dreams until the dawn
When the sandman will be gone,
And a new day then will greet you buckaroo. CHORUS

When he was born the nurses called him a beanpole and we teased about him having elephant knees. Now, the only wrinkles I can still find that he hasn't filled out, yet, are at the back of his head.

Have fun with them, bw, and Merry Holidays!

Hi, Jean, welcome to the Mudcat. I've started a new thread for you, which you may access by clicking HERE, requesting the lyrics for Baby Owlet. It's best to start a thread for specific lyrics, as your request may not be seen in a thread like this one. Also, with its own thread, the lyrics become easily available when someone else might be looking for them.

Good luck, I am sure someone will have them. And, welcome, once again,

kat

Well...hell's-bells...it look like the LaughKat has clone rights for the weekend.

Could have sworn and double sworn my childhood favorite had been posted. A ditty sung by the Duchess of "Lewis Carrol" fame.

Speak roughly to your little boy,
And beat him when he sneezes:
He only does it to annoy,
Because he knows it teases.
CHORUS.

(In which the cook and the baby joined):--

Wow! wow! wow!

I speak severely to my boy,
I beat him when he sneezes;
For he can thoroughly enjoy
The pepper when he pleases!

CHORUS:

Wow! wow! wow!

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Just interrupting this broadcast to say that "the baby" mentioned in the subject heading, and his twin sister, are turning one year old on June 9. This is so amazingly and wonderfully incredible! He's made it through 2 heart surgeries. Another big one coming soon. But first...the double birthday!!! HOORAY!!! HOORAY!!!

THANK YOU! GREAT NEWS:::::: the heart doctor saw Matthew. We were expecting really big surgery - the biggest one yet - this summer. But the doctor says that he doesn't need to see Matthew again for 6 months, and maybe then again 3 months after that - he's doing SO WELL!!!!

This will be a VERY VERY happy birthday, for both twins!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Far in the wood you'll find a well / With water deep and clear / Whoever drinks by moonlight bright
Will live a thousand years
Will live a thousand years
And all around the little well / Are seven lovely trees / They rock and sway and sing a song
And whisper in the breeze
And whisper in the breeze
And through the seven little trees / The evening wind will blow / And down fall seven little dreams
My baby just for you
My baby just for you

That's great news to hear. And now I know that when you're not there to sing to them in person, they can hear you on CD, instead!

How's this...

Go to sleep my baby,
Close those little eyes.
Let your heart go swooping,
Soar in endless skies.

Go to sleep my baby,
Go to sleep and dream.
Safe and warm and cosy,
In the moonlight's gleam.

Cheers

Incredibly, I'm on here looking for the 3rd verse to what may be the song you are searching for. My granddaughters LOVE this song...they are almost 3 and 5...so don't quit singing it too early.

Hushabye, my little owlet,
Many voices sing to thee.
Hushabye the water whispers,
Hush replies the tall pine tree.
Too hoo (this is pronunciation, I don't know how to spell it)
Too hoo
Too hoo

Weep no more, my little owlet,
In thy lofty swaying nest.
Weep no more, my little owlet,
Close your eyes and take thy rest.
Too hoo
Too hoo
Too hoo

Thanks....I'm going to have to somehow gather up all these tunes as well! (Maybe I should do just a lullaby CD next time?)

To Grandma Liz - That song is called The Indian Lullaby

Rockabye my lttile owlet
In thy mossy swaying nest
With thy little woodland brothers
Close thine eyes and take thy rest
TooHoo or TooWoo (4 times)

Hushabye my lttile owlet
Many voices sing to thee
Hushabye the water whispers
Hush replies the tall pine tree
TooWoo (4 times)

Sleep oh sleep my little owlet
Through our tent the moon shines bright
Like a great eye it will watch thee
Sleep til comes the morning light...
TooWoo (4 times)

I never learned the verse on Weep no more but I like it.
